James Joyce's Model Dublin, Barry Sheehan Feb 2016

James Joyce's Model Dublin, Barry Sheehan

Academic Articles

“You are walking through it howsomever. I am, a stride at a time. A very short space of time through very short times of space.” (Joyce,1986, p.31).

James Joyce wrote about Dublin from a position of exile. He created a model Dublin, one in which he mixed people and places, events and activities, real and imagined and combined them into a city that suited his own ends.

This imagined city has been examined remotely in a multiplicity of ways, and by people in a way that the real city has not. One can ask whether it is Dublin at all? …

Inspiration, Interpretation, And Authority: Laying Down The Law, Leah Jo M. Shelton Feb 2016

Inspiration, Interpretation, And Authority: Laying Down The Law, Leah Jo M. Shelton

Religion: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

This paper examines the relationships between and the complexities within biblical inspiration, interpretation, and authority and how they might contribute to liberating and oppressive uses of the Bible. For an example of an oppressive interpretation, the introduction includes a brief case study concerning the interpretive history of 1 Corinthians 11:10 and 1 Timothy 2:12. Continuing, David Law’s book, Inspiration, serves as the main source for theories of inspiration. He discusses two categories of theories—word-centered and non-verbal—and provides his own theory which locates inspiration in relationship between the text and the reader. In response to Law, this paper centralizes around …

Remembering Albert Bartholdi Passaic's Swissamerican Historian, Edward A. Smyk Feb 2016

Remembering Albert Bartholdi Passaic's Swissamerican Historian, Edward A. Smyk

Swiss American Historical Society Review

For most travelers, Switzerland conjures spectacular images of the snow-clad Alps; a place where rugged, commanding vistas coexist with an abundance of pure mountain air, exhilarating in its alluring crispness. Yet there is more to the story than picturesque scenery and quaint villages, which time seems to forget. The Swiss are a proud people , who through the intervening centuries, generation after generation, carefully nourished and guarded their love of freedom and independence. This sturdiness of mind and intellect was transplanted to America with the early Swiss settlers. They came and prospered, achieving distinction in numerous fields of endeavor.

Operation Sunrise: America's Oss, Swiss Intelligence, And The German Surrender 1945, Stephen P. Halbrook

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Operation Sunrise was a cooperative effort of American and Swiss intelligence services which led to the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht forces in Northern Italy and Western Austria on May 2, 1945. General Heinrich von Yietinghoff, Commander-inChief of the Southwest Command and of Army Group C, surrendered nearly a million soldiers, the strongest remaining German force. This was the first great surrender of German forces to the Allies, and became a strong impetus for the final Allied victory over Nazi Germany on May 8, Victory in Europe (YE) Day. Operation Sunrise helped to nip in the bud Nazi aspirations …

Digital Archive Of Mental Health Narratives, Elisabeth Anna Muldowney, Jon Balzotti Feb 2016

Digital Archive Of Mental Health Narratives, Elisabeth Anna Muldowney, Jon Balzotti

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Narratives have the power to help people understand experiences that are foreign to them. But narratives focusing only on a single dimension of a story have the potential to cause harm, as many popular depictions of eating disorders demonstrate. Common eating disorder narratives often correctly acknowledge that mental health challenges occur in result-driven communities. The category “result-driven” refers to environments that associate value and success with physically measurable achievements or unrealistic aesthetics. Some of these communities include dance, sports, acting, and modeling. Recent research has suggested categorizing religious groups with communities that potentially contribute to eating disorders.1

Family Affairs Newsletter 2016-02-01, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

“‘All That Glisters Is Not Gold’: Gender Representation And Theatrical Performances Of The Merchant Of Venice From 1998 To 2015”, Catherine Hollingsworth, Rick Duerden Feb 2016

“‘All That Glisters Is Not Gold’: Gender Representation And Theatrical Performances Of The Merchant Of Venice From 1998 To 2015”, Catherine Hollingsworth, Rick Duerden

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Merchant of Venice poses problems concerning the representation—a social and cultural construction—of gender and Judaism. Some critics wonder whether or not this play should be performed now: could and should modern audiences experience The Merchant of Venice? This study argues that this play should be performed today and has merit, not only for aesthetic but also for social reasons. The play forces audiences to confront how gender is represented in theatrical productions and question our own perspectives. What we gain from this experience is the following: by addressing these concerns in the play, the audience recognizes the unjust …
