The Lives And Deaths Of Flora Mac-Ivor And Rose Bradwardine: Romance And Reality In Sir Walter Scott's Waverley, Monica D. Allen Mar 2016

The Lives And Deaths Of Flora Mac-Ivor And Rose Bradwardine: Romance And Reality In Sir Walter Scott's Waverley, Monica D. Allen

Student Works

In Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley, Scott presents the problem of romance versus reality. He does this by personifying romance and reality through Flora Mac Ivor and Rose Bradwardine. Flora, with her passion, represents romance. While Rose, a more mellow character, represents reality. Waverley finds that he must choose between them. Rose is a “kindred spirit” to him, while Flora resembles “one of his daydreams.” They embody these ideas through a physical location. Flora’s location is the romantic Scottish Highlands, and Rose’s location is simply her father’s home. Besides location, the figurative deaths of Flora and Rose embody romance and …

Scholarly Ecotones In The Information Landscape, Drew Hubbell, John Ryan Mar 2016

Scholarly Ecotones In The Information Landscape, Drew Hubbell, John Ryan

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

For this issue of Landscapes, we invited contributors to reflect on the concept of ecotone as a method of interrogating intersections between literature, culture, art and landscapes. We wanted to encourage the ecocritical and creative arts communities (including poets, writers, photographers, painters and graphic artists) to engage with this term in the hopes that ecotone would do for the environmental humanities what Mary Louise Pratt’s contact zone did for cultural and post-colonialist studies (see, for example, Pickles and Rutherdale). Taking our cue from Donna Haraway’s provocative study of interspecies contact zones in When Species Meet, we proposed the …

You Can’T Buy Your Way Out Of Veganism, Bob Fischer Mar 2016

You Can’T Buy Your Way Out Of Veganism, Bob Fischer

Between the Species

Let’s make three assumptions. First, we shouldn’t support factory farms. Second, if animal-friendly agriculture lives up to its name—that is, if animals live good lives (largely free of pain, able to engage in species-specific behaviors, etc.) and are slaughtered in a way that minimizes suffering—then there is nothing intrinsically wrong with killing them for food. Third, animal-friendly agriculture does, in fact, live up to its name. Given these assumptions, it might seem difficult to criticize individuals who source their animal products from “animal-friendly agricultural operations. However, I argue that they should drastically reduce their support for animal-friendly agriculture because it …

Oceans And Ecotones In Mary Shelley’S Maurice, Or The Fisher’S Cot, Colin Carman Mar 2016

Oceans And Ecotones In Mary Shelley’S Maurice, Or The Fisher’S Cot, Colin Carman

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

This essay is about oceans in one of Mary Shelley’s non-canonical works, Maurice, or the Fisher’s Cot: A Tale (1820), and the relatedness of humans to their ocean environments; it’s also about Shelley’s representations of those rich and diverse life-forms that populate the edge between sea and land-mass and within what ecologists refer to as an “ecotone.” By characterising the ocean as an ecotone in Maurice, Shelley makes explicit a more eco-conscious way of understanding the nature/culture dichotomy and in terms that directly involve the shifting boundaries between land and sea, saltwater and freshwater, human and animal. This English Romantic …

The Physical Fitness Components And Posture Screening Of Female Competitive Dancers, Kristin A. Ramirez, Janet R. Wojcik Mar 2016

The Physical Fitness Components And Posture Screening Of Female Competitive Dancers, Kristin A. Ramirez, Janet R. Wojcik

The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin

The purpose of this research project is to fill the lack of information on the physical components, amount of pain experienced, and past injuries of competitive dancers under the professional level. Little research has been performed in this population. A total of 15 female competitive dancers were tested between the ages of 15-18 years old. Body mass index (BMI), height, weight, muscular endurance, aerobic endurance, flexibility, and alignment were measured, and then a pain rating survey and injury questionnaire were anonymously completed by the subjects. The participants performed a three-minute, twelve-inch step test, push-ups and crunches test, sit-and-reach test, and …

Integrating Principles For Choreographic Evaluation Into Education: One Proposed Model For Dropout Prevention, Brittany M. Johnson, Stephanie L. Milling Mar 2016

Integrating Principles For Choreographic Evaluation Into Education: One Proposed Model For Dropout Prevention, Brittany M. Johnson, Stephanie L. Milling

The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin

This research proposes a model that represents a synthesis of various choreographic evaluation principles and education reform curricula. Considering key concepts within education reform and arts education, this model attempts to provide insight on how choreographic pedagogy could possibly enhance student motivation, the needs of students at risk of dropping out, the curricular goals of reformation, and how choreographic pedagogy meets these goals. Through qualitative research, points of connection have been made between curricula specifically designed for efforts of reformation and the choreographic evaluation process used in the dance classroom. Together, reformation practices such as the Nine Principles of Coalition …

Robert Shaw is hailed to this day as the most influential and celebrated choral conductor to have ever been trained in the United States. His lifelong commitment in bringing the great masterworks of the choral/orchestral repertoire to American audiences is legendary. To assist in this endeavor, he translated and published several choral masterworks into English for accessibility to the American audiences. This performance used the Robert Shaw English adaptation of the St. Matthew Passion which he completed and published in 1959.

2016 North Omaha Voter: “Oops I Should Have Voted”, Preston Love Jr.

Black Studies Faculty Publications

When the 2016 election becomes history, after the November election for President, the vote on Nebraska’s death penalty, US congressman and many other important offices, I hope I don’t have to hear residents of my community say to me, “Oops I should have voted”.

To my beloved community I say. “The next four to eight years could be the worse we will faced in decades”. This a potential reality if we do not go to the polls. But to the credit of north Omaha I am feeling the surge of our community, recognizing that we must get out and vote …
