Lamentations, Betsy Bolton Mar 2016

Lamentations, Betsy Bolton

English Literature Faculty Works

The following poem attempts to think about loss from the perspective of different religions (the Jewish prophet Jeremiah, a Christian sermon, a Buddhist tale, Muslim prayer and traditions). The piece travels through time as well as space: it looks back at the Renaissance as a period in which Jeremiah’s lamentations were set to music and forced travel/slavery between Morocco and England first occurred.

Intrastate Armed Conflict And Peacebuilding In Nepal: An Assessment Of The Political And Economic Agency Of Women, Gyanu Gautam Luintel Mar 2016

Intrastate Armed Conflict And Peacebuilding In Nepal: An Assessment Of The Political And Economic Agency Of Women, Gyanu Gautam Luintel

Dissertations and Theses

The proliferation of intrastate armed conflicts has been one of the significant threats to global peace, security, and governance. Such conflicts may trigger resource exploitation, environmental degradation, human rights violations, human and drug trafficking, and terrorism. Women may suffer disproportionately from armed conflicts due to their unequal social status. While they endure the same effects of the conflict as the rest of the population, they also become targets of gender-based violence. However, women can also be active agents of armed conflict and perpetrate violence. Therefore, political and scientific communities at the national and international levels are now increasingly interested in …

Kings, Wars, And Duck Eggs: Interpretations Of Poetry In Egil’S Saga, James C. Daughton Mar 2016

Kings, Wars, And Duck Eggs: Interpretations Of Poetry In Egil’S Saga, James C. Daughton

MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference

This paper examines the function and cultural implications of poetry in Egil’s Saga, an Icelandic saga written around the thirteenth century A.D. The title character, Egil Skallagrimson, is a renowned warrior and obstinate maverick, but perhaps his most singular trait is his gift for crafting poetry—a talent reflected in the nearly sixty sets of his verse that appear throughout the prose text. Obviously, these poems allow the reader to tap into Egil’s psyche, but they also fulfill the more profound purpose of illuminating the values and experiences of medieval Icelanders. Egil eternalizes the heritage he shares with his countrymen, explores …

The Regendering Of The White Savior, Brett Seekford Mar 2016

The Regendering Of The White Savior, Brett Seekford

MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference

Filmmakers have long employed white characters that serve to lift African American characters out of destitution or hardship through inherently benevolent qualities; these heroes have been branded the central figures in the “white savior model” that has come to dominate films about race relations. The white savior centers whiteness while relegating blackness to the margins. In an analysis of To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) and The Help (2011), however, this paper will argue that gender also plays a significant role in the development of a white savior. Through discussions of characterization, narrative structure and setting, it becomes clear that the …

Holly Martins And The Impartial Spectator: The Economics Of The Third Man, Alexander W. Pickens Mar 2016

Holly Martins And The Impartial Spectator: The Economics Of The Third Man, Alexander W. Pickens

MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference

The film The Third Man is often critiqued for its portrayal of post-war Vienna and the abusive nature of totalitarian regimes in a nearly-anarchic state. However, this film does something that few other films do: it tackles the primary dilemmas facing economists using a visual medium and featuring some of the debates that have been plaguing economic thinkers for years (what is a just allocation of resources, competition in free markets, what happens when corrupt governments control resource allocation). Ultimately, the film is a unique analysis tension between the costs and benefits of the philosophies of Keynes and F. A. …

The Effect Of Americanization On Latin American Culture: A Comparative Study Using Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions And Pop Music, Jason Robert Shockey Mar 2016

The Effect Of Americanization On Latin American Culture: A Comparative Study Using Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions And Pop Music, Jason Robert Shockey

Honors Theses

In 1980, Dr. Geert Hofstede published a book outlining his methodology for quantifying and objectively comparing cultures based on six distinct dimensions. However, since Dr. Hofstede's research focused primarily on adult demographics, it may not adequately predict reality once the younger generation assumes a place of ideological primacy in society. My project aims to determine Americanization's impact on current Hispanic scores to see if they remain consistent with tradition or shift towards the United States' values. To accomplish this, I developed a scale similar to Hofstede's and analyzed the Billboard Top 40 list for 2014.

Prostitution And The Civil War, Anika N. Jensen Mar 2016

Prostitution And The Civil War, Anika N. Jensen

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

It was to my slight disappointment that I found out that the term "hooker," one of many referring to prostitutes (or, as they were called during the Civil War era, "public women), is not actually a play on the name of Joseph Hooker, the infamous and promiscuous Union general. Fighting Joe may, however, have helped elevate the term to its current popularity; after all, a certain red light district in Washington, D.C. was dubbed "Hooker’s Division." [excerpt]

Exploring The Aesthetics Ofmexican-American Popular Ritual, Christopher D. Tirres Mar 2016

Exploring The Aesthetics Ofmexican-American Popular Ritual, Christopher D. Tirres

Religious Studies

For many years now, I have been crisscrossing the disciplines of religious studies and theology. As an undergraduate in a department of religion, I was exposed to the approaches and methods of Religionswissenschat, or “the scientiic study of religion,” yet I also fell in love with liberation theology, which I discovered through two courses in politics. I was drawn to liberation theology’s critique of structural sin and its attention to the fullness of life in the here-and-now. Under the mentorship of a philosopher (Cornel West) and an historian of religion (David Carrasco), I wrote an undergraduate senior thesis on the …

Whose Story? His-Story., Meghan E. O'Donnell Mar 2016

Whose Story? His-Story., Meghan E. O'Donnell

SURGE

The essay instructions finally landed in front of me. I passed the extra sheets on and quickly glanced over the page, hoping that the prompt would be inspiring. There were two open-ended options from which to choose: military and social/political aspects of the war. My eyes first fell upon the social option and I pondered using this opportunity to shed light on the experiences of women during the war. I’d done this before – used assignments to explore history’s untold stories – and found it interesting. Then, in a fit of frustration that erupted out of nowhere, I thought to …

She Spoke For Those Without A Voice, John M. Rudy Mar 2016

She Spoke For Those Without A Voice, John M. Rudy

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

Statistically, about 50% of Adams County’s history has been women’s history since the dawn of time. But it can sometimes be painfully difficult to find out about the women of our county and their experiences. And as with most history, it is the troublemakers who stand out in the records. Luckily one of Adams County’s greatest troublemakers, Elsie Singmaster Lewars, is easy to find in the files of the Adams County Historical Society. Mrs. Lewars had the courage to speak for those without a voice. [excerpt]

Liberty's Last Post Office: A Story Of A Gold Mining Camp In Washington State, Wesley C. Engstrom Mar 2016

Liberty's Last Post Office: A Story Of A Gold Mining Camp In Washington State, Wesley C. Engstrom

Works by Local Authors

There was once a large center of activity in the Swauk Basin of upper Kittitas County. The place is called Liberty. Liberty was once the most action packed place in Kittitas County. At least it was for a while after gold was discovered in Swauk Creek. Like many gold camps the place boomed and ebbed over the years. Unlike some other places it never quite went completely bust. It came close, and fortunately for some it didn’t. It still exists today as a living ghost town.

The Liberty story has been told before in various ways. This telling of the …

The Role Of Self-Determination Theory And Cognitive Evaluation Theory In Home Education, Gina Riley Mar 2016

The Role Of Self-Determination Theory And Cognitive Evaluation Theory In Home Education, Gina Riley

Publications and Research

This article explores the theories of Self-Determination, Cognitive Evaluation, and Intrinsic Motivation as it applies to home education. According to Self-Determination Theory, intrinsic motivation is innate. However, the maintenance and enhancement of intrinsic motivation depends upon the social and environmental conditions surrounding the individual. Deci and Ryan’s Cognitive Evaluation Theory specifically addresses the social and environmental factors that facilitate versus undermine intrinsic motivation and points to three significant psychological needs that must be present in the individual in order to foster self-motivation. These needs are competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Because of curriculum and time constraints, intrinsic motivation may be difficult …

Exploring French Short Stories: Guy De Maupassant's Writing Style And Social Justice, Gielle Kuhn Mar 2016

Exploring French Short Stories: Guy De Maupassant's Writing Style And Social Justice, Gielle Kuhn

Honors Theses

This project explores the connection between French author Guy de Maupassant’s pessimist writing style and his observations of 19th century French social classes. A literary analysis of two of Maupassant’s short stories, La Parure and Le Gueux, determines key elements of pessimism, naturalism, realism and an unequal class structure, which discriminates between the peasantry, the working class, and the rich bourgeois. My research aims to demonstrate evidence that Maupassant uses a pessimistic writing style to advocate for social justice.

The Chronology Of The Events In Zechariah 12-14, Won Jin Jeon Mar 2016

The Chronology Of The Events In Zechariah 12-14, Won Jin Jeon

Honors Theses

In current scholarship, there is a lack of consensus on the timing of the specific events in Zechariah 12-14, with a focus on eschatological or sequential chronologies. Preliminary exegetical research has revealed many connections between the three chapters. For instance, the phrase “in that day” ( ביום־ההוא ) occurs 17 times (versus four times in the rest of Zechariah). This concentrated usage closely interconnects the three chapters and suggests that the timeliness of all of the events is in close succession. Through findings in literary structures, key words, and intertextualities with other passages of the Old Testament, the conclusion is …

John "Jack" Muirhead, John Muirhead, Meg Miner

All oral histories

Muirhead begins by telling the story of the home he lived in, which was removed when the Ames Library was built, and how Myers remembered his connection to the site while giving a library tour. He also recalls Myers cooking a special dinner for him and Pam Muirhead after Ellen Myers made a connection with their interests. Muirhead contrasts differences in the physical campus and atmosphere before Myers' era. He also recalls the emphasis Myers brought to the presence of John Wesley Powell at IWU and Myers' support for the Black History Project through the McLean County Museum of History. …

‘The Irish Folly’: The Easter Rising: The Press; The People; The Politics., Michael Foley

Conference papers

This paper aims to examine the coverage of the 1916 Easter Rising and the impact of that coverage on the political aspirations of Irish people in the aftermath of the Rising. It is examined here as a media event within the context of modernity and as an event that aimed to amplify on an international stage through the press the aims of the insurgents and so redefine Irish nationalism.
