Problem-Based Learning In Engineering Ethics Courses, Robert Kirkman

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

I describe the first stages of a process of design research in which I employ problem-based learning in a course in engineering ethics, which fulfills a requirement for students in engineering degree programs. The aim of the course is to foster development of particular cognitive skills contributing to moral imagination, a capacity to notice, respond to, and think about basic values in open-ended problem situations. In the course, groups of students develop their own problem situations based on their experience and expertise in engineering practice, then respond to those situations through a guided process of inquiry and problem solving designed …

The Openness Of Religious Beliefs To The Influence Of External Information, Darin Freeburg

Faculty Publications

Religious beliefs have important and wide-reaching impacts on society. They also tend to be viewed as impervious to the influence of information external to a religious setting. Eight focus groups were held with attendees of two United Church of Christ congregations. Participants were asked about their core religious beliefs, and transcripts were qualitatively coded for the interplay of belief and infor- mation. Analysis found that beliefs that were focused on people, processes and events external to the congregation showed the char- acteristics of being more open to external information. Demostraré que Antonio Muñoz Molina, en su novela Como la sombra que se va (2014) supera el paradigma posmoderno de simulacro. La novela entrecruza geográficamente Lisboa tres relatos: una crónica de la escapada de James Earl Ray después de asesinar al reverendo Martin Luther King y las memorias de la creación tanto de su novela El invierno en Lisboa (1987) como de Como la sombra que se va. Pijoaparte: El Pícaro Supermoderno En Últimas Tardes Con Teresa, De Juan Marsé, Nélida I. Devesa-Gómez

Nomenclatura: aproximaciones a los estudios hispánicos

En este ensayo propongo una lectura de Manolo “el pijoaparte”, protagonista de Últimas tardes con Teresa de Juan Marsé, como revisión de la figura del pícaro. Para ello, mi análisis se centra, por un lado, en la construcción del personaje, y por otro, en su relación con el espacio urbano. Apoyándome en las teorías de Marc Augé y Michel de Certeau, sugiero que Últimas tardes con Teresa presenta un contraste entre la modernidad representada por Barcelona y la burguesía, y el pijoaparte, que a través de su itinerario por la ciudad, motivado por la aspiración social, muestra una actitud supermoderna.

Se propone una periodización de la vida y obra de Sábato en tres etapas bien definidas. Estas tres fases, instauradas en su formación intelectual, se bosquejan progresivamente, siguiendo un orden no estrictamente cronológico, sino equilibradamente estructurado por los siguientes temas o preocupaciones centrales de cada período: la ciencia, (1925-1955) la política (1956-1976) y la espiritualidad (1980-2011). La primera etapa, esbozada en el presente artículo, delimita su profundo rompimiento con el mundo de la razón instrumental y el abandono de su carrera científica, proyectado en su libro de ensayos Uno y el Universo.

Desde el acercamiento a los cuerpos de la novela fundacional A la Costa (Martínez, 1904), propongo como estrategia de lectura un proceso de remoción de escombros para encontrar restos y cicatrices que nos ayuden a entender y descentrar la idea de modernidad sobre la que se alza la tradición literaria ecuatoriana. Nomenclatura: aproximaciones a los estudios hispánicos

In the novel Una holandesa en América (A Dutchwoman in America), Soledad Acosta (1833-1913, Bogota, Colombia) traces the journey of a young woman, Lucía, to America. Acosta uses literary models such as the Bildungsroman and the chronicles of European travelers to explore women’s place in society of her time and the question of European modernity against American “barbarism” in the context of national construction. As most of the speeches around this topic are from men, Acosta offers a different point of view in the debate and puts into question-established ideas.

Dangerous Fictions In Shakespeare's Richard Ii, Terence D. Wride

Student Works

In Shakespeare's Richard II, Shakespeare deposes monarchy by exposing the dangerous fictions of The King’s Two Bodies, Carl Schmitt's definition of sovereignty as expounded in Political Theology, and the English tradition of the divine right of kings and royal prerogative. By examining Ernst Kantorowicz's explication of the king's body politic and body natural as found his book The King's Two Bodies, I argue that Shakespeare critiques the popular political theology of his time by exposing the negative political repercussions of an ill-defined body politic.
