Body Composition: Reading, Writing, And Resisting Weight Loss Autobiography As Biopolitical Pedagogy, Katherine Ann Browne

In this dissertation, I argue that autobiographical narratives of body size function as lifestyle guides based on an interpretation of obesity as an undesirable bodily condition. These narratives are anchored by the “weight loss success story” narrative trope, which represents the result of extreme weight loss processes synthesized as “Before and After.” This dissertation serves the dual purpose of historicizing weight loss autobiography in the United States from the late 19th century to present, and arguing that these texts have been taken up as instructional guides for living, or biopedagogical tools. 1941年12月8日，日軍渡過深圳河正式向香港發動侵略戰。至平安夜，日軍攻至英軍在港島南端最後的一個據點—赤柱，兩軍爆發激戰。最終港督楊慕奇在聖誕日宣佈投降，為香港三年零八個月的艱苦歲月正式揭開了序幕。現時赤柱仍遺下不少日軍侵略及管治的遺址，其中設於聖士堤反書院內的文物徑更為這段歷史保留了甚為珍貴的文化財產。

This chapter explores recent research by critical theorists concerning theories of (under)development. Drawing from the research of Thomas McCarthy, Axel Honneth, Jurgen Habermas, Amy Allen, Nancy Fraser, and others, the author explores some of the divergent responses critical theorists have given toward the theory and practice of global developmental assistance. Some theorists defending a strong modernist approach to development (e.g., McCarthy, Habermas and Honneth) appear to endorse a logic of development that works within a domesticated model of capitalist markets and lending practices; others (Allen and Fraser) reject this approach. The chapter raises questions about how development that fits within …
