"Inspiring Empathy": A Descriptive Review Of A Musical Composition, Garo Saraydarian

This study explored the experiences of college professors using an assessment approach, descriptive review, to assess undergraduate music compositions. College professors, and educators in general, often debate best practices around assessing student work. A literature review showed a debate amongst music educators over approaches to assessing student compositions, with rubrics being especially controversial. Descriptive review uses collective discussion and a series of non-judgmental exercises that aim for participants to become more intimate with a student and their work. As an assessment technique that had been used to look at student artwork, albeit at the elementary grade level, descriptive review has …

An illuminating account of Ismaili music, spiritual poetry and social change in Badakhshan.

In the riverine valleys of the Pamir Mountains of Tajik Badakhshan, a thriving millennium-old community of Nizari Ismaili Muslims created a unique spiritual culture in which the performance of music and poetry plays a central role. This book focuses on the central musical and poetic tradition of the Pamiri Ismailis, qasīda-khonī (also known as maddo), tracing its origins, evolution, delocalisation and relocation.

"The Holy City is one of the iconic images of the “New Era” of “Mother’s work" —come to be called—that began in 1837 and lasted into the 1850s. Nearly three feet tall and two feet wide, the large gift drawing depicts a city divided between a rectangular inner precinct and four, half-moon-shaped suburbs. The inspired Shaker visionist who drew The Holy City began by outlining the plan in graphite, using a compass and straight edge, then tracing the lines in black ink. Located at 28 Cambridge Street in Boston, the African Masonic Hall served as the meeting place for the African Grand Lodge of Massachusetts and the African Humane Society. The former, the nation’s first black masonic lodge, was founded in 1775 to foster black unity, advocate for abolition, and fight colonization efforts through masonic fraternal tradition. Similarly, the African Humane Society, also called the African Society, was founded in 1796 and used similar fraternal practices to provide medical and funeral expenses for its members. Being African fraternal societies, both groups restricted their membership to black men. Located in Beacon Hill less …

Underrepresentation Of Black Students In Advanced World Language Study, Megan E. Golden

Curriculum and Instruction (Ed.D.) Dissertations

Advanced K-12 world language (WL) courses (level three and beyond) suffer from significant underrepresentation of Black students, subsequently impacting Black students’ college and employment opportunities. This study employs a critical constructivist grounded theory framework to analyze quantitative surveys and retrospective qualitative interviews with Black college-aged individuals. The goal of this study is to center the voices of Black students and reveal how they describe their world language courses, how they perceive the impact of those courses, and what factors influence their decision on whether to continue to advanced-level world language study. This lesson explores how a short creative piece by Ada Limón, U.S. Poet Laureate, draws on climate science knowledge to engage readers informationally, imaginatively, and emotionally. Students will reflect through discussion and/or writing on both the scientific methodology and the questions of equity and justice her poem raises. Finally, students will engage in a guided writing prompt where they research science knowledge around climate change and use what they find to shape their own short creative pieces (100-300 words), based in that science.

Cinematic aesthetic values have not been studied as thoroughly as those in music and the visual arts. Three hypotheses for these values are that they are like those of artistic paintings, that they emphasize the spatial coherence of the optical flow, and that they are temporally smooth. Here, we test these hypotheses and investigate other candidate aesthetic values by comparing the statistics of narrative movies and those obtained spontaneously. We perform these tests by using narrative movies from the early stages of cinematic history because these films are simple. Structural moving, the process of moving complete buildings to new sites, has shaped American landscapes for over two centuries. Thousands of wood-frame houses were moved with surprising frequency between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. Yet, moved buildings are “ordinarily” ineligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This project explores this exclusion two parts: an analytical essay that argues for their inclusion for nomination and a historic context survey that explains the prevalence of house moving. In this exploratory study of High School Sports Associations (HSSAs) and theirrelationships with sports communication programs at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), investigators discovered that the associations very broadly see the benefit of establishing mutually beneficial relationships. In its most helpful form, the relationships create Experiential Learning (EL) opportunities which give college students an advantage in a competitive industry while simultaneously helping associations staC the myriad and growing programming events and content platforms. The varying roles available to students, the process behind developing the relationships, and the barriers to creating such relationships are also explored.

William Hogarth's Portraiture: A Vehicle For Social Commentary, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Hoff

William Hogarth is often celebrated for the critiques of eighteenth-century England seen throughout his widely reproduced satirical print series and paintings, however his contributions to portraiture offer a compelling extension of his artistic vision and techniques. This research aims to explore Hogarth’s use of portraiture as a vehicle for social commentary and moral messaging, revealing broader themes of morality, nationalism, and identity among all of his works, comparing this approach to that of both his contemporaries and his own prints.

We surveyed a group of Moroccan Arabic-Spanish speakers in the Region of Murcia, Spain, to examine their linguistic profiles, their attitudes towards their native Arabic dialect, their motivations to learn Standard Arabic and their learning experience with Standard Arabic. We found varying degrees of dominance in this group along with fluctuating patterns of dominance, proficiency and language use according to age and onset of acquisition of Spanish. This group displayed generally positive attitudes towards their own dialect and their motivation to learn Arabic was related to their religious and cultural connections. Lessons From Mysticism For Healthcare Providers: Health Care As A Space For Intersubjective Encounters Of Care, Micaela Plantinga, Alexandre A. Martins

Society’s deep divisions, fueled by individualism, competition, consumerism, rigid ideologies, and limited dialogue, have impacted health care, leading to weakened connections between providers and patients. In the U.S., heavy reliance on medical technology and the rise of AI have further eroded these intersubjective bonds, reducing empathetic engagement in care. To address this challenge, the paper explores insights from Christian mystics Saint Teresa of Avila and Edith Stein. Teresa’s teachings on self-examination and humility, despite her life as a cloistered nun, influenced both her religious order and the broader Church. Meanwhile, Stein’s phenomenological approach emphasized empathy and "suffering with" others, viewing …
