By analyzing the United States Lavender Scare and immigration policy of the 1950s, this paper attempts to shed light on how the distinction between “American” and “Un-American” remains at the center of Queer rights advocacy. The heightened fear over the survival of the nation, along with the view of Queer immigrants as threats to the nation, was used to tighten immigration restrictions. This restriction, however, is complicated by existing prejudices against racial minorities and women. Queer rights groups began to rise to prominence during this time and mobilize against claims that they were anti-American or subversive deviants, working through the …

In the etiological mythology of Middle-earth, heavenly battles routinely invoke astronomical events, signs of Melkor’s marring of the world or mighty weapons in his arsenal of destruction. In this conference paper I specifically focus on battles involving the Sun and Moon, especially in Tolkien's later "Round Earth" cosmologies, where the Sun Maiden is "ravished" by Melkor.

Community Engagement In Music Therapy: Reflections From The Field, Jess Rushing, Denise M. Cumberland

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

This paper reflects on a music therapy community engagement project that incorporates clinical training, service learning, and community music therapy. Two faculty members and a practicum student in a Midwestern university engaged community members connected to Parkinson’s disease to create a music-based program. We offer a conceptual framework that connects approaches situated within community music therapy (CoMT) qualities and community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles. We share project processes, findings, and recommendations, emphasizing all as equal stakeholders.

This paper presents the development of heritage-focused outreach materials with the objectives of positively impacting traffic safety culture for Indigenous youth to reduce the number and severity of traffic crashes impacting these communities. The approach presented in this paper includes involving local community leaders in traffic safety education and incorporating culturally based material in outreach education. This could empower Tribal communities to preserve their cultural identities while acquiring the expertise needed to promote traffic safety.

Stepping Up, Keeping On Track, And Pulling Your Own Weight: Collaborative Arts-Based Service-Learning Metaphors, Marcy Meyer

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

In this study, the author explores metaphors related to students’ experiences conducting collaborative arts-based ethnographic research in a U.S. nonprofit organization. A metaphor analysis of 25 students’ essays revealed they were most likely to frame their experiences with arts-based service learning as a journey or a sports contest. The author examines the extent to which students’ metaphors legitimize or delegitimize arts-based service learning, as well as the degree of novelty that characterizes these metaphors. She explores the implications of her findings for teaching and promoting arts-based service learning in the academy.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula, an undergarment factory, and a women's study club may seem unlikely ingredients for a book, but they led to my book about women in northern Michigan and two ladies' undergarment factories where they worked. I never intended to publish a book. I did, however, want to shine a light on the largely untold story of hundreds of remarkable women to give them a voice and to preserve their stories.

Through The Glass Darkly: Cross-Cultural Collaboration And The Experimental Adaptation Of Shakespeare, James Thompson

Through the Glass Darkly is an experimental Australian-Indonesian film adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth, employing fragmented narratives, hallucinatory imagery, and cross-cultural spiritual frameworks to explore violence, guilt, and moral corruption. The project emerged from a collaboration between Australian and Indonesian film professionals and educators. Drawing on trauma cinema aesthetics and Indonesian mystical traditions (Kebatinan, Rangda masks), the adaptation structures itself around five vignettes: prophecy, murder, hallucination, retribution, and washing. The filmmaker employs a "heuretic" research methodology, prioritizing exploration over interpretation, to create a hybrid cultural text that interrogates Western canonical literature through postcolonial perspectives while navigating censorship through international collaboration.

McCraw’s article “A Reidian Transcendental Argument Against Skepticism” (2025) constitutes an original and thought-provoking contribution both to Reid scholarship and to the discussion of epistemic skepticism.[1] In the following I will make a few remarks about it, focusing on the discussion of skepticism. I start with a brief historical remark on Reid and Kant (§ 1) before I explain the anti-skeptical argument in some detail (§ 2). A discussion of the premises of the argument follows (§ 3). This article proposes Ignatian Mentoring as a framework for enriching academic mentoring with insights from Ignatian spirituality. While mentoring traditionally supports professional and personal development, especially for early-career faculty, the Jesuit tradition offers a deeper, holistic perspective inspired by spiritual accompaniment practices such as those found in the Constitutions of the Society of Jesus and the Spiritual Exercises. The framework is based on the mentoring program launched in 2021 by the International Association of Jesuit Engineering and Sciences Schools (IAJES), which connects faculty across a global network of more than 60 Schools. This article argues that putting the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP) in conversation with Queer Composition Pedagogy can support LGBTQIA+ students and their often-fraught positions at Catholic universities. Drawing from experiences at a Jesuit college and education research, it introduces the OAEPA strategy—Observation, Analysis, Evaluation, Production, and Assessment—as a framework for designing theology courses. The author, drawing on his personal experience, offers a clear reflection and methodology for common discernment, inspired by the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The difficulties and problems are noted, as are the possibilities and potential of this proposal. The process is certainly complex. It requires great generosity and willingness on the part of all those involved, but as the author concludes, “it works.” We are faced with a proposal of Ignatian spirituality that can enrich and illuminate the new paths of synodality along which the Church is journeying.

Honor Moore was an Irish food writer who started writing a daily recipe column for the Belfast Newsletter in 1946, “Cookery Hints” written under her nom de plume, Housekeeper was published until 1963. In her personal collection there are scrapbooks of cuttings of her columns. Moore’s 1952 scrapbook, comprises recipe columns from each month of that year as well as cuttings she saved from other newspapers and magazines. Barbara Ketcham Wheaton’s structured approach to reading historic cookbooks was applied to Moore’s columns for this study; using the categories of ingredients, the cook’s workplace, the meal, the book and worldview. In the early nineteenth century, Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin and Alexandre-Balthazar-Laurent Grimod de La Reynière laid the foundations of modern food writing. Subsequently, the publication of Brillat-Savarin’s La Physiologie Du Goût in 1825 changed the landscape of food writing. His approach was at the root of a marriage between the art of prose and the art of cooking; he associated art with gastronomy. Although he only wrote a single book, he achieved great success, which contributed to the modernisation of a gastronomic society and to the development of French cuisine.
