"Tell Me You Own Me, Gimme Them Coins": Postfeminist Fascination With Lolita, Lana Del Rey, And Sugar Culture On Tumblr, Rachel E. Davis
Honors Theses
This research sought to describe the size and analyze the content of communities on Tumblr that share posts regarding Lolita, Lana Del Rey, and sugar culture. Research questions included: Why might young women on Tumblr choose to share posts relating to these things? How are they interpreting the images and texts they share? Is this a means of expressing desire, or are these individuals subverting these images and ideas as a means of critiquing gender expectations? A qualitative textual analysis was conducted on data collected by social media analytics software. Tumblr communities sharing content regarding Lolita, Lana Del Rey, and …
Engagement With The Visual Arts Increases Mindfulness, Lydia G. Fogo
Engagement With The Visual Arts Increases Mindfulness, Lydia G. Fogo
Honors Theses
For many cultures throughout the ages, art has been synonymous with healing and has held a key role in many ancient spiritual and religious healing rituals. Traditionally, art has also been held as a hallowed and fundamental part of society and culture. However, the role of art is changing. Today the value of art-making is in increasingly under scrutiny and often dubbed an unnecessary and unimportant luxury. Art is being slowly removed from school curricula and faces defunding. While art has never been more available, still too often art is quarantined in the isolated halls of museums and available only …
Floccinaucinihilipilification, Bonnie A. Buffington
Floccinaucinihilipilification, Bonnie A. Buffington
Honors Theses
Floccinaucinihilipilification is one of the longest words in the English language. It is mainly used as a curiosity, and means the action or habit of estimating something as worthless. Stumbling upon words like this has always brought me a small amount of joy, and the moment I learned this word I knew it encapsulated everything this project was meant to be. The allure it held went beyond the definition, which I connected to the difficulties I experienced when beginning this creative research endeavor. I chose it thinking of the titles of many scientific research papers; they contain words that are …
Story Problem Solving, Brian D. Kalina
Story Problem Solving, Brian D. Kalina
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
This project paper will explore and define the relationship between the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) and the timeless concept of storytelling. Since the beginning of time, people have been sharing stories to relate their experiences and their solutions to overcome challenges and obstacles. CPS is a more modern methodology that aids people in their approach and their ability to generate plans and solutions to overcome challenges and obstacles. Therefore, the premise of this project is to seek answers to the questions; (1) How might we look to stories as frameworks for solving our problems? and (2) How might we marry …
Creativity As A State Of Consciousness: Creativity And Altered States Of Consciousness, Kari A. D'Amico, Kari A. D'Amico
Creativity As A State Of Consciousness: Creativity And Altered States Of Consciousness, Kari A. D'Amico, Kari A. D'Amico
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
Part of a larger research initiative focused on altered states of consciousness as it relates to creativity, this inquiry is a continuation of my independent study completed fall 2016. This project is designed to further develop research in the area of creativity as it relates to altered states of consciousness. It offers a new paradigm for how we might present the concept of altered states of consciousness within the field of creativity. This altered state is in contrast to what will be defined as an ordinary state of consciousness. The product and qualities expressed in an altered state of consciousness …
American Emergency : Catastrophe And Culture In The U.S.A., From The Civil War To Hurricane Katrina., Lynda Kristian Mercer
American Emergency : Catastrophe And Culture In The U.S.A., From The Civil War To Hurricane Katrina., Lynda Kristian Mercer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines socio-cultural experiences of national disasters in the United States as they intersect with political rhetorics of democracy, to understand the forms and functions of state power as it is mediated through famous historical figures. Tracing the manifold possibilities from within and around the disruptive spacetimes of disaster, which sociologist Harvey Molotch describes in their ultimate function as societal “rationalizers” (371), I analyze catastrophes as contested spaces and histories that often get situated as variations on the “man vs. nature/god/man” binaries in public discourse. By analyzing the deployment of, and response to, such explanatory frameworks in the United …
Unthink Pink : Master Narratives And Counterstories Of Breast Cancer., Jessica C. Hume
Unthink Pink : Master Narratives And Counterstories Of Breast Cancer., Jessica C. Hume
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This work examines the construction and impact of the master narrative breast cancer which is supported and reified by the contemporary breast cancer awareness movement. I contend that historical problematic constructions of the female body were interwoven with the beginning of the movement around the turn of the twentieth century. As a partial result, the female body with breast cancer is abject, and therefore subject to policing and discipline. The master narrative of breast cancer, through pinkwashing, enacts this policing and discipline. The master narrative expresses several distinct messages which may be exclusive of the experiences of many people, causing …

Transplantar : Los Frutos De Sus Labores Transplant : Fruit Of Their Labor., Marie-Elena Ottman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will describe my body of work both formally and conceptually and accompanies my thesis exhibition. In the Introduction section, I will discuss my influences and the forms that I am exploring in creating this body of work and the experience that provided me with first-hand knowledge that pertains to immigrants. In Methods and Materials, I will discuss the materials that I used, glass, ceramics and metal. I will separate the glass and ceramics in two categories as each material was handled differently. I will also touch on the metal frame that is utilized to suspend the forms. …

Sight-Singing Pedagogy : A Survey Of High School Choral Directors., Marissa Lee Pollock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to highlight effective sight-singing techniques used by successful choral directors in the state of Kentucky. The method used for this study was a non-experimental survey sent to thirty-four high school choral directors. Directors were selected to participate based on distinguished assessment scores received over the last five years (2011-2015). They were asked questions about their techniques, background in education, and placement of sight-singing in the curriculum. With a response rate of 65% the results indicated that the majority of directors had received or earned at least a master’s degree, had taught for at least …
Eight Pieces Of Pie., Maggie E. Cassaro
Eight Pieces Of Pie., Maggie E. Cassaro
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As a studio artist and a creative writer, I contemplated what would happen if I utilized the principles of fine art in the application of the written word. If I became the subject of the written word, could I formulate the telling of my story in such a way that a reader could find themselves sculpted within its pages? Eight Pieces of Pie tells my story, that as a single woman at the age of forty-three years, eight months and six days, I discovered I was unavailable. I delved back to my first memories to discover how my emotional unavailability …
Horizon Cross : A Parafictional History Through Photographs., Tom Legoff
Horizon Cross : A Parafictional History Through Photographs., Tom Legoff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Horizon Cross: A Parafictional History Through Photographs is a body of work that dwells within the intersection between truth and fiction in photography. It is informed by the history of hoax photographs and my fascination with the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland and black holes, the space-time boundary of which is known as an event horizon. I have imagined into being a community in northern Ontario Province, equipped with the technology of the mid-nineteenth century but also with concepts far ahead of their time. To portray the inhabitants of Horizon Cross I have created photographic portraits of fictional people that …
The Implications Of A University Of Louisville First Year Experience Course On Student Success Outcomes Based On Race And Gender., Nadine C. Petty
The Implications Of A University Of Louisville First Year Experience Course On Student Success Outcomes Based On Race And Gender., Nadine C. Petty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Extant research has shown that across U.S. institutions, the first and second years of college are the most precarious because of high attrition rates. To address this, many colleges and universities implement First Year Experience (FYE) interventions with hopes of increasing first year GPA, retention rates, and overall college success. Over 90% of colleges and universities either offer or make these FYE interventions mandatory for their first-year/first-time freshmen. There is a large body of research regarding the association of FYE interventions and student outcomes, but the findings are mixed. Extant literature also does little to focus on FYE student outcomes …
Thomas Merton : Evil, Suffering, Zen And The Purified Soul Theodicy., David Edward Orberson
Thomas Merton : Evil, Suffering, Zen And The Purified Soul Theodicy., David Edward Orberson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thomas Merton was one of the most important Catholic writers of the 20th century. Hundreds of scholarly books and articles have been written about various facets of his life and work. However, one area of personal interest that has not been adequately addressed in Merton’s work is the theodicy question. Merton never wrote a book or even an article dedicated to the problem of evil. In this project, I examine Thomas Merton’s work to determine if he espoused any kind of theodicy. More specifically, I review Merton’s entire canon, i.e., books, journals, correspondence, articles and talks he gave to novice …
Slovakia’S New Religious Registration Law Is A Step In The Wrong Direction, Lubomir Martin Ondrasek
Slovakia’S New Religious Registration Law Is A Step In The Wrong Direction, Lubomir Martin Ondrasek
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
"The new religious registration law is a step in the wrong direction because individual and collective religious freedom is a central pillar of any free and democratic society and should not be compromised by arbitrary discrimination. Muslims and other religious groups with fewer members who are prevented from registering cannot fully exercise their religious freedom (the “forum externum” aspect), a fact that should not leave indifferent democratically-minded people of all faiths and none. Slovakia should change its anachronistic and unfair system of differentiating between registered (privileged) and non-registered (discriminated) religious groups, especially when this differentiation is based on an arbitrary …

The Plight Of Undocumented Female Migrants: Identifying Structural Factors That Contribute To The Proliferation Of Sex Trafficking And The Failings Of International Law, Hannah K. Valles
International and Global Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the conditions at two specific border zones, the United States-Mexico border and the Mexico-Guatemalan border, that render undocumented female migrants vulnerable to abduction or recruitment into sexual exploitation. In addition to exploring the factors that expose women to trafficking networks, the study scrutinizes the legal failings of the international law-making community with regards to the safeguarding of women whose socio-economic conditions and environment of perpetual violence prompt their extralegal international movement. The paper provides an overview of the social, economic, and historical factors that underpin the flourishing of sex trafficking operations in …

The 5th Of May: Trajectory, Reappropriations And Possibilities Of A Mexico-American Tradition, Antonio Sánchez, Julieta Altamirano-Crosby
Anthropology and Museum Studies Faculty Scholarship
This paper is aimed at to analyze the historical significance of the date of 5th of May for Mexico and the United States. The Documental Argumentative Research method was used for this research, and it is concluded that this victory had a profound historical significance and relevance not only for Mexico but also for the United States, representing an important symbol of national patriotism. This date was forming a path of the new Chicano, the new Latino, a new future strategically minded, as an opportunity to educate, inform and inspire the public good, to reexamine Mexico and the Mexico-American history, …
Through Northern Eyes: Robert E. Lee And The Northern Press, Steven D. Sheller
Through Northern Eyes: Robert E. Lee And The Northern Press, Steven D. Sheller
Theses and Dissertations
Most historians would agree that it is an anomaly in history how Robert E. Lee became an American icon. General Lee was the commander of a rebel army that was trying to split the country he had once loyally served into two. Even after being defeated at the Battle of Appomattox, instead of Lee suffering the normal fate of all failed revolutionaries, he was pardoned and allowed to continue to live in his native Virginia. Over a short amount of time after General Lee’s death he was elevated from rebel to hero. The origins of this can be traced back …
Rhythm And Movement: The Lighting Design For "Eurydice", A Living Poetic Metaphor, Emily Rachel Clarkson
Rhythm And Movement: The Lighting Design For "Eurydice", A Living Poetic Metaphor, Emily Rachel Clarkson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will delve into the historical context, analysis, design process and execution of the lighting design for the University of Arkansas’ production of Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice. Special care will be taken to document an exploration of the challenges faced by this production during research, design meetings as well as throughout the implementation of this design. This document will seek to answer the questions: how does one design the lighting for a show that is in and of itself a metaphor? When each scene requires its own striking visual, how does the designer weave the play together so that it …
Disability And The Theodicy Of Defeat, Kevin Timpe, Aaron D. Cobb
Disability And The Theodicy Of Defeat, Kevin Timpe, Aaron D. Cobb
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Marilyn McCord Adams argues that God’s goodness to individuals requires God to defeat horrendous evils; it is not enough for God to outweigh these evils through compensatory goods. On her view, God defeats the evils experienced by an individual if and only if God’s goodness to the individual enables her to integrate the evil organically into a unified life story she perceives as good and meaningful. In this essay, we seek to apply Adams’s theodicy of defeat to a particular form of suffering. We argue that God’s goodness to individuals requires that God defeat the suffering to which a range …
Remote Sensing Insights Into Storage Capacities Among Plains Village Horticulturalists, Adam Wiewel
Remote Sensing Insights Into Storage Capacities Among Plains Village Horticulturalists, Adam Wiewel
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Maize was a fundamental component of the diet and economy of Middle Missouri Plains Village groups, sedentary farmers with settlements along the Missouri River during the last millennia. More than a century of study has contributed to our understanding of agricultural production among these peoples, but little effort has been made to consider temporal variation in production. Such an understanding is crucial to examining changes that occurred before and after the arrival of colonists and their trade goods in the seventeenth century. Plains archaeologists have suggested that the storage capacity of Middle Missouri villages increased during the sixteenth through the …
Ticket To The Past: A Political History Of The Mexico City Metro, 1958-1969, Maxwell E.P. Ulin
Ticket To The Past: A Political History Of The Mexico City Metro, 1958-1969, Maxwell E.P. Ulin
Grand Valley Journal of History
This essay outlines the historic political battle between Mexico's longest serving mayor, Ernesto Uruchurtu, and the nation's president, Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, over the construction of what would become the second largest subway system in the Western Hemisphere, The Mexico City Metro. The conflict, which eventually resulted in Uruchurtu's resignation, was characterized by latent political tensions between the PRI and Mexican middle class that would erupt in 1968 and lead to the ultimate decline of PRI hegemony. I thus argue that the new Metro project did not reflect Mexico's democratic modernization--as its supporters meant it to do--but rather the vestiges of …

The Letter To Sardis And Eternal Security, Tory Arnesen
The Letter To Sardis And Eternal Security, Tory Arnesen
Masters Theses
Does the letter to Sardis threaten eternal security? The research concerning the context of the letter, word studies for overcome, Book of Life, and an exegetical analysis reveal that the letter is both a warning and a comfort. The warning is directed to the lost people in the church as well as those without assurance, and the comfort is for the genuine believers. Eternal security is not threatened, but an exhortation to ensure that one is in the faith is present in the letter.
"Only The Name Is New:" Identity, Modernity, And Continuity In Afghan Star, Timothy Olson
"Only The Name Is New:" Identity, Modernity, And Continuity In Afghan Star, Timothy Olson
Masters Theses
In 2005 a televised singing competition took Afghanistan by storm. In a nation previously known for censorship of music and violations of women’s rights, a new precedent began to take shape. People of all ages and ethnic groups followed Afghan Star and cast their votes by mobile phone—a technology that had only recently become available. Though followed by a sea of controversy, Afghan Star has persisted for more than a decade and remains one of the most popular television programs in Afghanistan. Prior to the Taliban, Afghanistan already had a vibrant musical culture, but most people felt that playing music …

'When The Birds Spoke Gaelic': Periodization And Challenges Of Classification For Scottish Gaelic Literature, Michael Newton
Studies in Scottish Literature
Discusses issues of periodization in the history of Scottish Gaelic literature and argues for the importance of generic classification as a counterpoise to period because of the importance of literary traditions that cross conventional literary of historical period boundaries.
Scots Take The Wheel: The Problem Of Period And The Medieval Scots Alliterative Thirteen-Line Stanza, Andrew W. Klein
Scots Take The Wheel: The Problem Of Period And The Medieval Scots Alliterative Thirteen-Line Stanza, Andrew W. Klein
Studies in Scottish Literature
Examines distinctively Scottish forms of the alliterative thirteen-line stanza, best known in standard English surveys from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and argues that the stanza has a longer, more varied, independent use in Scottish poetry that should not be treated primarily in terms of English parallels.
