Sharp Teeth, Red Lips, And Dangerous Ideas : The Construction Of The Female Abhuman In Fin-De-Siecle Gothic Literature, Karina Millan May 2017

Sharp Teeth, Red Lips, And Dangerous Ideas : The Construction Of The Female Abhuman In Fin-De-Siecle Gothic Literature, Karina Millan

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

As new scientific theories, especially Darwinism, became known to the public at the end of the nineteenth century, the abhuman, a term Kelly Hurley, in her work The Gothic Body Sexuality, Materialism, and Degeneration at the Fin De Siecle, has adapted for academic use from a work of fiction by William Hope Hodgson, found its place in Victorian Gothic literature. Hurley’s central concern is how the morphic quality of the human form in these works speaks to a larger cultural anxiety of shifting identities, “an anxiety generated by scientific discourses, biological and sociomedical, which served to dismantle conventional notions of …

An Actor's Method To Building The Character Of Mother Superior In Agnes Of God, Venita J. Matthews May 2017

An Actor's Method To Building The Character Of Mother Superior In Agnes Of God, Venita J. Matthews

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Agnes of God is the story of a nun (Agnes) who gets pregnant while living in a convent. She almost dies after giving birth to a baby, who was later found dead in a garbage can. The cast consists of three members: Agnes; Mother Miriam Ruth (Mother Superior); and Dr. Martha Livingstone, the court appointed psychiatrist. Faith is tested as Dr. Livingstone draws closer to uncovering the truth surrounding the conception, birth, and death of Agnes’ baby.

I performed the role of Mother Superior in the UNO production of Agnes of God. This thesis documents my rehearsal and …

Social Justice Through Storytelling: Sugar Land, Alexa Garster May 2017

Social Justice Through Storytelling: Sugar Land, Alexa Garster

Honors Thesis

This thesis project (i.e. feature screenplay) was inspired first and foremost by an interest in the function of capital punishment in today’s society; and secondly, by the significant absence of female protagonists across the majority of contemporary film narratives. As such, this script focuses on a female anesthesiologist who, through a series of unanticipated events, comes to accept the job of executioner at a Texas state prison.

This narrative thus addresses the role of the executioner—as well as the political, social, cultural, and psychological consequences that come from such a position—against the larger backdrop of capital punishment. It is a …

Uncovering The Confusing Influence Experts Have On Music Copyright Cases, Arata-Enrique Kaku May 2017

Uncovering The Confusing Influence Experts Have On Music Copyright Cases, Arata-Enrique Kaku

Honors Projects

Contemporary copyright decisions by Federal Courts perplex composers; am I the creative composer, or am I an infringer on someone else’s intellectual property? By forming a temporary monopoly to monetize new content, copyright protection incentivizes artists to be fruitful. In a creative field like music, an overly broad definition of copyrightable expression can lead to a “chilling effect” on creativity. This chilling effect is exacerbated by the great latitude given expert witnesses to claim infringement based on broad classifications of expressions. My paper addresses the question: To what extent should expert witnesses be probative when they extend ownership rights beyond …

Kat & Lily: An Original Screenplay, Isabella Engelhard May 2017

Kat & Lily: An Original Screenplay, Isabella Engelhard

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

In Kat & Lily, my screenplay focuses on the strained relationship between two sisters and their approach to love, life, and self-actualization. Kat, the older sister, is a wild child and Lily, the youngest, has a much more practical approach to life. Their parents divorced when they were young, thus causing both sisters to approach love in different ways. On one hand, Kat uses her sexuality to gain power over men, and on the other hand, Lily feels that her brain is more important than her body. My screenplay is very much a romantic comedy trope, however, I wanted to …

Feminist Cultural Analysis Of An Invisibilized Genocide: Gender, Disability, And Memory In Texts By Zabel Yesayan, Hasmik Djoulakian May 2017

Feminist Cultural Analysis Of An Invisibilized Genocide: Gender, Disability, And Memory In Texts By Zabel Yesayan, Hasmik Djoulakian

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This research is a feminist cultural analysis of the novels, letters, and short stories of Zabel Yesayan. Yesayan was a writer, activist, and teacher during the early twentieth century, during the Armenian Genocide, and up until her death in the mid-1940s when the Soviet Union took control of Eastern European countries, including Armenia. This project insists not only on telling the history of an invisibilized genocide, but also on telling that history through a critical feminist lens based on the documented observations and creative interventions of a woman who lived during the genocide.

In many of her works, Yesayan imagines …

Revolutionary Every Day: A Dramatic Exploration Of Women And Their Agency In The Black Panther Party., Kristen Michelle Walker

Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones

This capstone project is centered around Black Panther women and explores what it means to be a revolutionary black woman dealing with politics surrounding gender in both private and public spaces during the late 1960’s and beyond. In addition, the project includes an original fictional play based on the experiences of Panther women around the world. In addressing the social conditions that impacted female Panther activism and agency, together the capstone project and play operate as a commentary on power, gender relations, and society in and around the Black Panther Party.
