The article analyzes the (re)configuration of space towards female resistance in Cette fille-là by Marssa Bey and La voyeuse interdite by Nina Bouraoui. The two authors portray deviant female characters who refuse to be caught up in the social enclave governed by patriarchal law. In these works, the assertion of identity is interdependent on the unfolding of space which opts for denouncing or liberating the voice, the body and the feminine individuality. By convening the imagination along with the female memory, these marginal identities engage in bending the confinement and freeing the speech. Clothed in presumed fragility and weakness, this …

This paper analyzes the psychological vulnerability of a wandering and traumatized feminine character in Ken Bugul's novel Cacophonie. It is argued that vulnerability, presented both as a creative and destructive force, is conveyed using an aesthetic of strangeness. Disturbances accumulate on the figurative, event and semantic levels, maintaining an hesitation between supernatural and natural explanations of the narrative process. However, those same troubles also allow a diving into the pain of a lonely spirit. Ultimately, this psychic maze offers a breakaway, given as a consented and redefined fragility. Through the willing choice of death, the never-ending agony of the character …

Review Of La Bella España: El Teatro De Lope De Vega En La Rusia Soviética Y Postsoviética By Veronika Ryjik, Slav N. Gratchev
Modern Languages Faculty Research
There are certain writers whose importance only grows with time, and the longer the distance that separates us from them, the more facets of their genius they demonstrate to us, the readers of the twenty-first century. One of these authors is Lope de Vega. The new book of Veronika Ryjik now makes another major contribution to the scholarship of a great master who was well known and admired in Soviet Russia. It is indeed a serious study and one that fermented in the mind of the scholar for more than ten years – the true symbol of a truly remarkable …

Textil Y Territorio: Sobre Los Tejidos Intrincados De Poroma, Norte De Chuquisaca, Bolivia, Verónica Auza Aramayo
Signos Comunes En Los Textiles Andinos Y Los Mesoamericanos, Victòria Solanilla
Signos Comunes En Los Textiles Andinos Y Los Mesoamericanos, Victòria Solanilla

Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders: A Musical Adaptation, Krista Connelly
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is an original song cycle for soprano and baritone voices with Pierrot ensemble (flute/piccolo, B-flat clarinet/bass clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and percussion), utilizing poetry taken from Autumn Slaughter’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders-Poetry. Of Slaughter’s poetic interpretation of 35 of the diagnoses within the psychiatric manual (the DSM-5), eleven poems/diagnoses are used for this musical work. This document is an analysis of the theoretical constructs of each movement and the musical representation of the poem and diagnosis.

Mai Te Kopu O Te Wahine: Considering Maori Women And Power, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku

Moko kauae: female Maori facial tattoo. This is the subtle power of maintaining a femininity that offends, that endures, that persists in the face of the settlers’ and invaders’ descendants; threatens sensibility and comfort levels; and continues to fascinate and challenge, charm and repel. Whether or not they were aware doing this, the elderly women who continued to inscribe their faces into the final decades of the past century and wear their identity and heritage with pride, were effectively confronting the colonizer and saying, we are here, and we will never ever go away. My face may make you uncomfortable, …
Designing Collaborative And Mediated Experiences With Networked Circuit-Bent Devices, Anthony T. Marasco, Tate Carson, Matthew A. Bardin
Designing Collaborative And Mediated Experiences With Networked Circuit-Bent Devices, Anthony T. Marasco, Tate Carson, Matthew A. Bardin
School of Music Faculty Publications
Circuit bending provides creative methods of generating sound by subverting a device’s normal operation through hacking. While the means of interacting with hacked devices in performance are primarily limited to tactile controls and explicitly mapped actions, exploring alternative methods of engaging with these instruments would allow for mediation systems and collaborative performance design to enhance the use of nostalgic devices in audio/visual art. This paper discusses the artistic benefits of blending the musical and aesthetic practices of circuit bending with the field of networked musical performance. We present the artistic benefits of traditional circuit bending and methods of extending networked …
Intergenerational Family Learning Programs: Stories Of Latinx, Immigrant Families And Their Journeys To And Through Higher Education, Monica Ramos
Dissertations
ABSTRACT
This research presents the stories of three Latinx families who participated in an intergenerational family program. I endeavored to understand their experiences navigating the American system of education and their immigrant stories. Their narratives revealed significant details that can serve as integral elements in the development of an intergenerational learning curriculum based on culture, language, and traditions, and that steps away from the assumptions that perpetrate the deficit-based narratives about Latino families and higher education. Their hopes provide points for further research and advocacy. In this qualitative study, I collected data using semi-structured interviews, including documents and artifacts. The …
Sartorial Subversion: Eliza Haywood’S Fantomina And The Literary Tradition Of Women’S Community, Ruth Garcia
Sartorial Subversion: Eliza Haywood’S Fantomina And The Literary Tradition Of Women’S Community, Ruth Garcia
Publications and Research
This article locates Fantomina in a literary tradition that proposes all-female communities, such as convents and monasteries, as liberating and empowering spaces. I argue that the novella implies a virtual community rather than an actual one, as the heroine collectively embodies many different women, all of distinct social ranks: the heroine is both one woman and a variety of women brought together under the auspices of a single body, much the way discrete individuals together compose a community. Then, too, Beauplaisir, the object of the heroine’s desire, treats all the personae the same, no matter their social station. This emphasis …

A Musically Embedded Curriculum For Rural Elementary Schools, Rachael Marie Dubay
Masters Theses
Rural school districts across the nation have been at a crossroads for decades. The amount of funding and resources provided to these small towns is often meager and falls short to provide the schools and students with the proper education, teacher training, curriculum, building maintenance, and other necessary educational materials. School officials and board members in these areas across the nation each year have had to make the hard decisions of what to prioritize and what will have to fall by the wayside. Unfortunately, cuts in budgetary and educational reform have regularly faced music education programs and it has become …

Music Education Transformation: How Orff, Kodaly, And Suzuki Promote Academic Success, Michelle M. Angeli
Masters Theses
We all need Music in our lives. Music education is valued less in the education system, but present data from these literature sources of articles, books, and research, tells us another story. For decades school systems have struggled with whether or not to include Music in the education system. There are many values for Music, including individual growth and development. In this research study, I intend to showcase the central benefits of Music to help show there is a need for these programs and to help promote music programs based on their own merits and not just because of academic …
Board Game Under Construction: Putting The Design In Game Design, Cory S. Gurley
Board Game Under Construction: Putting The Design In Game Design, Cory S. Gurley
Masters Theses
The contemporary design landscape is informed by the need for interactive design, yet not all interactive media is digital. Technology has transformed the way many people receive information, and thus the way that they interact with graphic design, and the impact of user interfaces in creating a positive interactive experience is more important now than ever. However, while this phenomenon is usually identified with the digital environment of smartphone apps, websites and video games, user interface is equally important in analog design, and few media illustrate this better than board games. Board games have enjoyed a surge in popularity over …

Empty Time As Traumatic Duration: Towards A Cinematic Aevum, Kelli Fuery
Empty Time As Traumatic Duration: Towards A Cinematic Aevum, Kelli Fuery
Film and Media Arts Faculty Articles and Research
Frank Kermode uses the term aevum to question the links between origin, order, and time, associating experience with spatial form. Without end or beginning, aevum identifies an intersubjective order of time where we participate in the “relation between the fictions by which we order our world and the increasing complexity of what we take to be the ‘real’ history of that world”; being “in-between” time is a primary quality of the aevum. Regarding cinema, aevum identifies this third duration as emotional experience, occuring as traumatic time. It facilitates thinking beyond lived temporal experience of everyday life to a philosophy …
