Teju Cole: “I Have Experienced Great Freedom Precisely In Swiss Villages”, Alexandra Kedves

Swiss American Historical Society Review

A metal railing of a viewing terrace is plowing with hard strokes over the panorama picture of Helvetian mountain tops. On another, an orange protection-net covers a construction site. Slats of a shutter traverse the view on yet another photography. And over the postcard idyll of the lake of Brienz a foghorn pushes white and big.

Ood For The Ghosts: Reading Ruin’S Being With The Dead With Nietzsche, Babette Babich Jun 2020

Ood For The Ghosts: Reading Ruin’S Being With The Dead With Nietzsche, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

A focus on roots, localizations, usurpations, and obliterations together with commemoration and different fields of scholarly research, along with a thematic focus on Homer’s Nykia, permit Hans Ruin to revisit the foundations of history in Being with the Dead. Ruin draws on cultural sociology, including the work of Alfred Schütz, as well as Heideggerian historicity and the dead of the distant past, including archaeology and ethnography, paleography and physical anthropology. Ruin also engages Michel de Certeau’s Writing of History and its focus on the other in a necropolitical account tracked through interdisciplinary fields. In my reading I supplement Ruin’s critical …

Two Early Nineteenth Century Overseas Emigrants From Näfels, Kanton Glarus, Switzerland: Walter Marianus Hauser And The Colony At Red River, Canada, Susanne Peter-Kubli Jun 2020

Two Early Nineteenth Century Overseas Emigrants From Näfels, Kanton Glarus, Switzerland: Walter Marianus Hauser And The Colony At Red River, Canada, Susanne Peter-Kubli

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Walter Marianus Hauser (1777-1850) was a member of Näfels’ elite society that had gained its wealth and prestige from the foreign military service of Swiss and occupied important public offices in the Canton. At the start of the nineteenth century, that group increasingly lost its importance. While its social prestige endured and its members such as the von Müller, von Bachmann, and von Hauser continued to use their titles of nobility, their economic base, that is highly paid officer positions in foreign military service, had disappeared.

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Ilse Margarete Langhans was born in Allenstein, East Prussia (in present-day Poland), on December 21, 1932, the only daughter of Wilhelm Langhans and Margarete Emelie Issler. Her father was Oberstadtsgaertner (head city gardener) in nearby Koenigsburg until he was drafted into the German Army during World War II and killed in action, leaving behind Margarete, Ilse, older brother Juergen, and younger brother Dieter to fend for themselves when they and thousands of other ethnic Germans fled Russian forces invading East Prussia in the winter of 1944.

D'Une Violence L'Autre. Scénographie Des Rapports De Hiérarchie Et De Domination Dans La Préférence Nationale De Fatou Diome, Olga Hel-Bongo Jun 2020

D'Une Violence L'Autre.

Figures of vulnerability abound in contemporary francophone novels. Be it children soldiers, Black women in Monenembo and Kourouma's fictions, abused children or prostitution in Marie NDiaye, Fiston Mwanza and Fatou Diome's novels, the vulnerable subject, far from undergoing torments of a decadent and miserable life due to a situation of lack, often shows or hides a strength that often sharpens on contact with violence. Fatou Diome uses silence and writing to express the character's resistance to violence. For instance, the feminine subject sets up barriers around the self to counter the adversity of a world often depicted as intolerant, undifferentiated …

What Didn’T Happen: Analyzing Cal Poly’S Proposed Educational Assistance Program Following The Korean War, Sam Mcclintock Jun 2020

What Didn’T Happen: Analyzing Cal Poly’S Proposed Educational Assistance Program Following The Korean War, Sam Mcclintock

The Forum: Journal of History

Following the Korean War, Cal Poly was approached to take part in a program to provide technical education assistance to vocational schools in the Republic of Korea by the newly formed United States Foreign Operations Administration. This paper seeks to analyze that program in the context of Cal Poly’s history, especially in comparison to other international education programs and other dealings between the University and the United States Government. Although Cal Poly ultimately never took part in the Korea Program, the negotiation process still provides insight into the priorities of the college and its place in the context of US …

The Midnight Ride Of Sybil Ludington: A Forgotten Hero In The Shadow Of Paul Revere, Jessica Kay Rebollo Jun 2020

The Midnight Ride Of Sybil Ludington: A Forgotten Hero In The Shadow Of Paul Revere, Jessica Kay Rebollo

History

The American historical narrative has always been dominated by men; the achievements of women are often left to the past. One such woman who has been forgotten is Sybil Ludington, who in 1777 at the age of sixteen, rode forty miles to alert a unit of the Continental Army of advancing British troops. In this paper, I will compare Sybil Ludington to history’s most renowned nightrider, Paul Revere. I will study the way in which Sybil Ludington and Paul Revere are memorialized in American history, and expose the reason for the lack of Sybil Ludington’s popularity in the American historical …

Phrenology, Physical Anthropology And Ethnology: Nineteenth-Century Race Science And The Foundations Of Eurocentrism, Mckenzie Jayne Leeds Jun 2020

Phrenology, Physical Anthropology And Ethnology: Nineteenth-Century Race Science And The Foundations Of Eurocentrism, Mckenzie Jayne Leeds

History

This paper explores phrenology, physical anthropology, and ethnology--each a nineteenth-century scientific discipline that significantly influenced racial beliefs. These sciences were integral in forming and perpetuating racial hierarchies and the belief of perceived European superiority. The main goal of this project was to deconstruct the European superiority narrative, and to argue that these disciplines created a network of continued racism.

Silence Over Their Tombs: A Microhistory Of American Perceptions Of Alcoholism In The Late Eighteenth And Early Nineteenth Centuries Using The Adams Family Papers, Lucy Rebecca Wickstrom Jun 2020

Silence Over Their Tombs: A Microhistory Of American Perceptions Of Alcoholism In The Late Eighteenth And Early Nineteenth Centuries Using The Adams Family Papers, Lucy Rebecca Wickstrom

History

The perception of alcohol addiction in the United States of America has changed numerous times throughout the nation’s history, with people accepting it as a mere part of life in the colonial era before preachers and thinkers began to denounce it as a vice and a moral failure. The influential writings of respected patriot Dr. Benjamin Rush, however, initiated a fundamental shift in the way that Americans understood alcoholism, as he was the first to make the argument that it was a disease beyond the control of its sufferers. This paper uses the example of the famous Adams family to …

The Holocaust And Human Experimentation: The Nazi Approach To Medicine, Samantha Miller Jun 2020

The Holocaust And Human Experimentation: The Nazi Approach To Medicine, Samantha Miller

History

The beginning months of 1945 marked the commencement of the swift downfall of the Nazi regime and the end of the tyrannical, oppressive ruling power it held over most of Europe for close to a decade. As Allied Forces invaded Nazi Germany and the remaining Nazi-occupied territories, they undoubtedly expected to encounter the incredible devastation that World War II had left upon most of the Western European continent, from toppled cities, to separated families, to the rising death toll. However, Allied soldiers would soon have to come face to face with another side-effect of the war, something unforeseen and unimaginable, …

Freedom’S Paradoxes: A Case Study Of The Slave Schooner Julita, Lucy Wickstrom Jun 2020

Freedom’S Paradoxes: A Case Study Of The Slave Schooner Julita, Lucy Wickstrom

The Forum: Journal of History

After Great Britain abolished the slave trade in 1807, the British Royal Navy committed one-fifth of its manpower to the cause of capturing other nations’ illegal slave ships. This effort to enforce abolition liberated 250,000 displaced Africans over the course of the nineteenth century and brought the crews that had carried them before officials to have their cases tried. Because of the careful documentation of these cases by the Mixed Commissions, there is a wealth of primary sources detailing the circumstances of these captures and the human beings claimed as cargo. This paper utilizes a case study of one such …

This article is about figures of vulnerability and resistance or "vulnerability in resistance" in A so long letter by Mariama Bâ, Moolaade by Ousmane Sembène and La grève des bàttu by Aminata Sow Fall. It aims to show that no one can be locked in their vulnerability. The individual, even the most vulnerable, is always more than his vulnerability that he can mobilize as a resource in the organization of resistance against the institution or the unjust norms of which his vulnerability is the product. If one recongnizes "porosity of the subject with regard to the social", which porosity means …

This study looks at vulnerability in its full complexity through an analysis at the interstice of sociology and rhetoric of the book Genealogie d'une banalite by Sinzo Aanza. The inhabitants of the poor neighbourhood of the Bronx decide to overcome their misery by digging under their dwellings, in search of copper to sell to the Chinese. This access to money brings them to relish in certain pleasures. The characters live in an enclosed environment that, through the instability of their representation, becomes the space of multiple enigmas: social, sexual and emotional. These characters provoke a condensation of meaning leading to …

This article focuses on the topic of vulnerability and the ambivalence of the heroine's strategies of resistance in Marie NDiaye's novel Rosie Carpe. The analysis of Rosie's detachment, oblivion and fantasy demonstrates how memory, consciousness and imagination can become areas of resistance in front of an unbearable reality. As a matter of fact, Rosie proposes an inner reconfiguration of the reality which, by its oversights and alterations, gives her the possibility to escape suffering, obligation and sin. This way, she widens the gap with herself and the world in order to protect herself. Paradoxically, this gap condemns her to apathy …

L'Imaginaire À L'Épreuve Du Carcéral : Le Pouvoir Des Mots Dans Cette Fille-Là De Marssa Bey Et La Voyeuse Interdite De Nina Bouraoui, Chedli Jedidi Jun 2020

The article analyzes the (re)configuration of space towards female resistance in Cette fille-là by Marssa Bey and La voyeuse interdite by Nina Bouraoui. The two authors portray deviant female characters who refuse to be caught up in the social enclave governed by patriarchal law. In these works, the assertion of identity is interdependent on the unfolding of space which opts for denouncing or liberating the voice, the body and the feminine individuality. By convening the imagination along with the female memory, these marginal identities engage in bending the confinement and freeing the speech. Clothed in presumed fragility and weakness, this …
