Elessar Telcontar Magnus, Rex Pater Gondor, Restitutor Imperii, Richard Z. Gallant Jun 2020

Elessar Telcontar Magnus, Rex Pater Gondor, Restitutor Imperii, Richard Z. Gallant

Journal of Tolkien Research

The nature of the heroic-ethos changes in the late Third Age of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Legendarium. At the beginning of the First Age, a Germanic ethos that Tolkien called the theory of Northern courage accompanied the exile of the Noldor. However, at the dawn of the dominion of Men, a new ethos emerges. It is an ethos of hope rather than the “sad light of fatalism” of the “long defeat.” This ethos is exemplified, ad bono exemplum, in the character of Aragorn who fuses the old ethos and tradition into a new ‘pseudo-chivalry’ appropriate for the Age …

Noir Affect [Table Of Contents], Christopher Breu, Elizabeth A. Hatmaker Jun 2020

Noir Affect [Table Of Contents], Christopher Breu, Elizabeth A. Hatmaker

Literature

Noir Affect proposes a new understanding of noir as defined by negative affect. This new understanding emphasizes that noir is, first and foremost, an affective disposition rather than a specific cycle of films or novels associated with a given time period (the mid-twentieth century) or national tradition (the U.S.). Instead the essays in Noir Affect trace noir’s negativity as it manifests in different national contexts (from the U.S. to Mexico, France and Japan) manifests in a range of different media (films, novels, video games, and manga). The forms of affect associated with noir are resolutely negative: these are narratives centered …

Xenocitizens: Illiberal Ontologies In Nineteenth-Century America [Table Of Contents], Jason Berger Jun 2020

Xenocitizens: Illiberal Ontologies In Nineteenth-Century America [Table Of Contents], Jason Berger

Literature

Sociality under the sign of liberalism has seemingly come to an end—or, at least, is in dire crisis. Xenocitizens returns to the antebellum United States in order to intervene in a wide field of responses to our present economic and existential precarity. In this incisive study, Berger challenges a shaken but still standing scholarly tradition based on liberal-humanist perspectives. Through the concept of xenocitizen, a synthesis of the terms “xeno,” which connotes alien or stranger, and “citizen,” which signals a naturalized subject of a state, the book uncovers realities and possibilities that have been foreclosed by dominant paradigms. Xenocitizens glimpses …

The Pedagogical Refinement Of Covid-19, Ekaterina Lomperis

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

In the history of Christian thought, suffering has frequently been conceptualized as a process of “refinement.” Suffering “refined” believers and religious communities by (painfully) stripping away the unnecessary, as well as by revealing and perfecting the core dimensions of religious practice.

Evidentiality, Epistemic Modality And Mirativity: The Case Of Cantonese Utterance Particles Ge3, Laak3, And Lo1, Ka Fai Law Jun 2020

Evidentiality, Epistemic Modality And Mirativity: The Case Of Cantonese Utterance Particles Ge3, Laak3, And Lo1, Ka Fai Law

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines a set of three utterance particles—ge3, laak3, and lo1—in Hong Kong Cantonese in terms of evidentiality, epistemic modality, and mirativity. Cantonese utterance particles have long been studied; however, close investigation of evidentiality and mirativity on a small set of particles is relatively rare. Previous accounts claim that ge3 and laak3 convey certainty. On the other hand, linguists also claim that the use of the utterance particle lo1 assumes a high level of knowledge from a hearer. This thesis has two main purposes: to untangle the differences between the utterance particles ge3 and laak3 in terms of epistemic …

Emergent Formal Functions In Schubert's Piano Sonatas, Yiqing Ma Jun 2020

Emergent Formal Functions In Schubert's Piano Sonatas, Yiqing Ma

LSU Master's Theses

Drawing on the work of Janet Schmalfeldt and William Caplin, I explore the way in which emergent formal function determines our perception of form in four piano sonata movements by Schubert: D.840, D.845, D.850 and D.894. Janet Schmalfeldt adapts the notion of formal function to directly address the dialectic between “being” and “becoming,” approaching formal function from a phenomenological perspective. Building on her work, I define emergent formal function as a formal function that is conditioned by how the listener’s expectations change. It is an important analytical tool that helps us understand how and why Schubert’s sonata forms depart from …

Development Of Cal Poly’S School Of Architecture And Environmental Design, Robert Chomicz Jun 2020

Development Of Cal Poly’S School Of Architecture And Environmental Design, Robert Chomicz

The Forum: Journal of History

In the turbulent decade of the 1960s, Cal Poly consciously diverged from a Master Plan created by the state Department of Education in order to create one of the best architecture schools in the nation, which highlighted the university’s unique position as the only polytechnic in the CSU system. This article details Cal Polys commitment to the development of the program through the examination of the expansion of the Architectural Engineering department into a full-fledged College of Architecture in the years 1948 to 1972. Three landmark academic years are examined in order to highlight the growth of the Architecture program. …

The Danger Of Current Rwandan Gender Politics, Amani Briggs Jun 2020

The Danger Of Current Rwandan Gender Politics, Amani Briggs

Women's, Gender and Queer Studies

This critical analysis will investigate whether Rwanda’s glorified representation of women in government positions truly serves the women in their society or rather the agenda of the men in power. Rwanda is frequently hailed as the prime example for African feminism due to their 2008 parliamentary elections. The 2013 Rwandan Parliamentary elections ushered in a record -breaking sixty-four percent of seats for women candidates, making Rwanda the top country for women in politics. In comparison, women make up a global average of 23.8 percent of parliament members as of June 2018 (W.E. Forum, 2017). Their representation of women in government …

Centering The Black Woman As A Subject Of Portraiture In Nineteenth-Century French Art, Llyleila Richardson Jun 2020

Centering The Black Woman As A Subject Of Portraiture In Nineteenth-Century French Art, Llyleila Richardson

XULAneXUS

Until the 19th century, artistic depictions of black women by European artists were rare. Often they were relegated to the background as domestic attendants to European noblewomen, serving as symbols of the latter’s colonial wealth and further provide contrast with the darkness of their skin against the aristocratic fairness of their white mistresses. The transition into the 19th century was a turbulent period in European history, especially for France, as the country saw multiple revolts and governmental changes at home. Simultaneously colonization overseas continued to expand, creating previously unheard-of access to foreign cultures and ideas.

Black women became an interesting …

Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies

This study aims to show the authority of HanafiFiqh's text and its scope to comprehend the contemporary Islamic identity in the current Arab situation, which suffers from certain incidents occurred to it while making arguments with the other. Due to the expansion of the literary type dealing with human rights, its significant to look into our Fiqh because the topic has importance in the third millennium. In this time, humanity felt alienated after World War II.

This work falls into two points: the first deals with the narrative's potentiality of comprehension in the Hanafi Fiqh's origin and its rhetoric; The …

Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies

This research of studying the regulations for Al-amr bilmarouf wa-nnahi an Al-Munkar (al-Hisbah is an attempted application) aims to transfer al-Hisbah from being a private idiom of its own into a daily realistic investigation of all communal activities. A new unexplored level of study, a deep examination of the lack of Omran, the Jewish issue, the unknown strategies and the occupation of Islamic regions contributed to explain the ambiguities. Moreover, this research falls into two Chapters: The First Chapter deals with the theories whereas the Second Chapter is an attempt for application. Al-Hisbah is examined in three levels, theoretical, practical …

منهج ابن عاشور في التعامل مع الدلالة الصرفية - من خلال تفسيره التحرير والتنوير- Ibn Ashour's Approach In Dealing With The Morphological Connotation Through His Book “Al-Tahrir Wa Al-Tanwir”, Suhad Ahmad Qunbar
