A hymn entitled “This Is My Father’s World,” written by Maltbie Davenport Babcock around the year 1901, includes the words: “This Is My Father’s World, O let me ne’er forget…” Unfortunately, many Christians seem to have forgotten that this world belongs to their Heavenly Father. Justice for the poor and the environment has been neglected as Christians pursue economic and material gain, as well as the church’s pursuit of converts over disciples. This thesis examines the particular contributions of Basil of Caesarea on the development of tradition by evaluating his claim that he is not innovating. Basil’s creativity, as examined by Andrew Radde-Gallwitz, allows him to develop more explicitly the reception of customs and oral teachings as apostolic tradition. The thesis uses modern scholarship on both the Council of Nicaea and Basil to examine Basil’s defense of “written and unwritten traditions” in his On the Holy Spirit. Particular attention is given to the use of liturgy and the teachings of the fathers by Basil in his defense of his own doxology. …

Creating North Carolina Populism, 1900–1960: Part 2: The Progressive Era Legacy, 1930–1960, James L. Hunt

Between 1900 and 1930, North Carolina’s first generation of professional historians constructed scholarly accounts of Tar Heel Populism. These pioneers offered a version of the recent past that supported white supremacy and the current Progressive Era political leadership. They agreed Populism’s destruction had been desirable. University-based historians opposed the Populist Party’s support for significant changes to tax policy, broad-based democracy, and radical forms of corporate regulation, especially of railroads, banks, and monopolies. The key figures included J. G. de Roulhac Hamilton, Simeon A. DeLapp, Florence E. Smith, and John D. Hicks. Most earned Ph.D. degrees in history from northern universities, …

Collective-Historical Trauma: A Portfolio of Basic Theory and Case Studies

Collective-historical trauma is a fairly new concept within academia. Despite this novelty, the theory underwrites many historical events and can serve as an explanatory factor in describing some of our most potent social issues. At its core, collective-historical trauma refers to the damage incurred by a population when a trauma occurs, whether it is acute or systemic. This topic is particularly potent right now as we attempt to tackle COVID-19, police brutality, and racism in America.

I Love You, Go Away, a novel set in Milwaukee, tells the story of a twenty-two year-old nobody, Gabriel Driscoll, who meets and befriends a middle-aged, drug addicted, recluse actor, Beau Brooks. But less than six months into their friendship Beau commits suicide. At the funeral Gabriel meets a twenty-nine-year-old corporate executive, Michelle, the daughter of Beau’s long-time girlfriend. Gabriel and Michelle bond over their mutual grief and quickly strike up a romance. The racial violence that occurred in Memphis, Tennessee on the first three days of May 1866 was no sudden accident. Following the abolition of slavery and the fall of the Confederacy, race riots and racial violence in general intensified as a result of fluctuating race relations in southern states whose social hierarchies were built upon the degradation and supposed inferiority of blacks. The Memphis Massacre of 1866 was one such expression of white anger and bitterness over the disenfranchisement of former Confederates, the increasing numbers of educated, wealthy blacks coming into Memphis, and the disturbance of the old status quo …
