The Shadow Of Dante In French Renaissance Lyric: Scève's Délie, Alison Baird Lovell Nov 2020

The Shadow Of Dante In French Renaissance Lyric: Scève's Délie, Alison Baird Lovell

Research in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

This book presents an interpretation of Maurice Scève's lyric sequence Délie, object de plus haulte vertu (Lyon, 1544) in literary relation to the Vita nuova, Commedia, and other works of Dante Alighieri. Dante’s subtle influence on Scève is elucidated in depth for the first time, augmenting the evident allusions in Délie to the Canzoniere of Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca). Scève’s sequence of dense, epigrammatic dizains is considered to be an early example, prior to the Pléiade poets, of French Renaissance imitation of Petrarch's vernacular poetry, in a time when imitatio was an established literary practice, signifying the poet’s …

Recipes For The Living And The Dead: Technological Investigation Of Ceramics From Prehistoric Sicily. The Case Studies Of Sant’Angelo Muxaro And Polizzello, Gianpiero Caso Nov 2020

Recipes For The Living And The Dead: Technological Investigation Of Ceramics From Prehistoric Sicily. The Case Studies Of Sant’Angelo Muxaro And Polizzello, Gianpiero Caso

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The current study aims at testing whether potters acting across Central Sicily broadly shared the same manufacturing practices between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, or if they mediated and promoted a more diversified production. The study explores the technological features of local pottery by adopting an interdisciplinary approach to compare ancient ceramics from rock-cut burials at Sant’Angelo Muxaro, with those from the sanctuary at Polizzello through a combination of analytical techniques. The two sites were chosen as they best represent the cultural background of the Platani Valley. Sant’Angelo Muxaro seems to become the main location across inland Sicily …

Searching For Answers: Examining Historical Christianity In Nineteenth Century Europe Through Kierkegaard & Nietzsche, Robert Jones Nov 2020

Searching For Answers: Examining Historical Christianity In Nineteenth Century Europe Through Kierkegaard & Nietzsche, Robert Jones

Theses

The Europe of the 1800s saw remarkable change. Previously unthinkable ideas and 'isms' made their way to the forefront of exploration in European society, forcing Christianity to a crossroads it had never before experienced. This thesis examines the fusion of politics and religion into a sort of surrogate religion for the Post-Enlightenment world. Above all, it examines historical Christianity through precedent-setting writers Søren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche. Given the unique process of secularization in the nineteenth century, both writers offer something often overlooked; the inevitable progress or decline of the Lutheran tradition depends, in true existentialist fashion, on the individual.

The Power Of Non-Compliant Logos: A New Materialist Approach To Comic Studies, Stephanie N. Phillips Nov 2020

The Power Of Non-Compliant Logos: A New Materialist Approach To Comic Studies, Stephanie N. Phillips

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to understand how an image becomes a meaning-making actant. By tracing the lifecycle of an image starting with its production, I analyze how the image changes and transforms as it circulates and enters into new and sometimes unexpected relationships. Specifically, I look at the NC logo, an image found in the popular comic book Bitch Planet by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine de Landro. The NC logo, which stands for “non-compliant,” is a fictitious symbol used on prisoner uniforms in the science-fiction comic series, and marks women who have failed to conform to societal guidelines set by …

Reframing Joseph Cardinal Bernardin’S Consistent Ethic Of Life In The Light Of The Crisis Of Our Common Home And Pope Francis’ Integral Ecology, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta Nov 2020

Reframing Joseph Cardinal Bernardin’S Consistent Ethic Of Life In The Light Of The Crisis Of Our Common Home And Pope Francis’ Integral Ecology, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta

Theology Department Faculty Publications

The article is based from the a defended dissertation of the same title. As raised by Pope Francis in Laudato Si’ and as evidenced by the various ecological problems we face, the crisis of our common home harms both non-human and human life. It is becoming more evident that to consistently defend human life inevitably means caring for our common home. Joseph Cardinal Bernardin’s moral vision of a consistent ethic of life (CEL), reframed in the light of the crisis of our common home and Francis’ call for an integral ecology, provides a moral framework that inseparably links the protection …

A Comparison Of Localization Accuracy With Binaural Recordings Utilizing A Binaural-Head Microphone And Vr Visualization, Joseph Erichsen

Student Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceived location of broadband signals created via binaural recording and then replicated in a virtual listening space. Listeners were asked to localize an auditory target positioned in one of four horizontal quadrants in three vertical planes. A binaural recording was created in both anechoic and echoic environments and subjective tests were conducted. Tests were repeated, with a virtual reality headset to virtually replicate the testing space. Results showed the effectiveness of binaural recording in recreating the perceived source locations in “3-D” space around a specified listening position in different conditions. Statistical …

Women In Palestinian Folk Tale, Mohammed Dawabsheh

Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث

This paper examines the wemen are portrayed in the Palestinian folktales. Of special interest are the so-cial spiritual, psychological and sexual portrayal of women in the roles they assume: mother, sister, wife, daughter, daughter-in-law and fellow wife. It also investigates both the negative and positive mythical depictions of women in Palestinian folk tales. Later, the paper draws a comparison between this portrayal and the way women are featured in modern social and psychological science. Inspired by the relevant approaches, particularly the mythical ap-proach, the paper used the descriptive analytical approach.

Metaphor And Emotiveness As Rhetorical Devices In Abbas’S Address To The Pope, Aysar Yaseen Nov 2020

Metaphor And Emotiveness As Rhetorical Devices In Abbas’S Address To The Pope, Aysar Yaseen

Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث

Managing any linguistic event means steering the situation towards serving one’s own purpose or goals via careful wording of one’s message. This is immensely achieved through using emotive words that address the receiver’s emotions rather than his/her intellect since managing linguistic occurrences is closely intertwined with subjectivity and emotiveness. In other words, language must be warm, intimate, and sentimental and addresses conscience to effect persuasion. Furthermore, Language is the carrier of image. For the image to be understood, two conditions must be met. First, image must be accessible, i.e. exists or can be imagined in the immediate context and culture. …
