Successful adaptation to the high-elevation Andes would have required both cultural and biological adaptations by early human populations. These past adaptations continue to shape the evolutionary outcomes of both humans and non-human species today. A multispecies perspective was used to examine how humans and non-human creatures, specifically insects, were shaped by past human adaptations. This dissertation asked two primary questions: 1) Given the importance and evolutionary history of potato consumption in the Peruvian Andes, is a genetic adaptation to better digest potato starch detectable in present-day Peruvians? and 2) Using the Andean Potato Weevil (APW) phylogeny as a proxy, what …

山濤任職吏部十多年間，為晉武帝選賢無數，《山公啟事》為其就官位空缺而撰寫的適合任官人選的啟文。

本文以歷史文獻為依據，以文本互證方法嘗試分析山濤品評人物的分類和其準則。由於搜集資料時發現前人多以《世說新語》、《人物志》為六朝人物品評的研究材料，而清人葉德輝輯刻整理的《山公啟事》則鮮有學者集中研究，又因山濤舉薦人才每每親自品題，可據以研究晉代政治人物品評的材料，故論文會以此為切入點主要集中考釋山濤在《山公啟事》裡面的品藻「題目」，然後分析他品評人物時的特點，以及比較山公與《世說新語》在人物品藻上的異同之處。

有關明清傳奇敘事程式的研究，林鶴宜的《規律與變異：明清戲曲學辨疑》首先提出各項基本和輔助程式，幫助研究及釐清戲曲作品的敘事脈絡。林鶴宜認為明清傳奇的敘事程式大致有三：「結構性程式」、「環節性程式」和「修飾性程式」1。本文發現《紅梨記》和《贈書記》有按照規律程式鋪排劇情，獲得既定效果；同時亦有透過變奏程式，為情節帶來創新的演繹。本文將集中討論《紅梨記》和《贈書記》的「結構性程式」和「環節性程式」，仔細探討其表演和文學的規守及演繹變化。本文分為七部分：第一章為緒論。第二章為《紅梨記》程式規範考。第三章為論《紅梨記》特殊敘事程式和關鍵情節。第四章為《贈書記》程式規範考。第五章為《贈書記》特殊敘事程式和關鍵情節。第六章為兩劇「磨難試煉程式」比較。第七章為全文總結。

Transgender identities in fairy tale retellings are rare, but can reveal much about gender fluidity. Helen Oyeyemi’s novel Boy, Snow, Bird conflates transgender identities with mirrored falsehoods and fairytale spells, pathologizing a trauma victim who turns out to also become an abuser, while Gabriel Vidrine’s novella “A Pair of Raven Wings” depicts a queer transgender man with dignity, making it clear that the trauma he suffers is at the hands of bigots rather than being an invention of a sick mind or the cause of his transition. The early Pentecostal movement was characterized by social boundary crossing that challenged the church and society. Today, a growing number of Latinx theologian-scholars of Pentecostalism are foremost representatives of outspoken witness. They employ an emancipative hermeneutic that calls the contemporary Pentecostal community to holistic engagement and forcefully addresses corrupt power structures. This prophetic tradition, however, is being distorted by Samuel Rodríguez and the NHCLC through the denial of the human rights of Latinx immigrants and Muslims. Rodríguez is an outspoken advocate for Donald Trump’s dehumanizing immigration policies and the incarceration of migrant children at the U.S. borders. He is also …

Literary works give expression to universal themes through settings, subjects, and techniques that are culturally tied. This article reviews generic conventions involving point of view, protagonist, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution that typify Western short stories in order to examine how varying patterns can illuminate cultural contrasts between Thailand and the West. When we recount the histories of social movements, there is a tendency to imagine either a steady, linear march towards progress or a slow descent from radical ideas into complacency. The feminist movement gets painted in waves, progressing from white to intersectional, while in the LGBTQ+ rights movement the contrast of the Stonewall Riots & ACT UP with late 2010s focus on gay marriage and the corporatization of Pride is understood as a watering down and betrayal of the movement’s origins. Even though the canon of Western Art History has attributed the Pop movement to the US and the UK, artists from around the world have made significant contributions to pop art and formed their own Pop movements. This includes the Latin American pop artists Felipe Ehrenberg (Mexican), Antonio Henrique Amaral (Brazilian), and Juan Dávila (Chilean), who, between the years 1968 and 1974, fled right-wing political unrest of their respective home countries and gained artistic education in dominant, imperialistic countries. This thesis examines the relationship between immigration and far right-wing popularity in Europe, specifically France and Spain after the 2015 migration crisis. Comparing data from several European Union countries after 2015, a pattern is identified that when immigration increased, so did the representation of far right-wing parties. This thesis then details a nuanced analysis of two case studies, and the underlying reasons why far right-wing parties gained popularity in France and Spain. Women, particularly mothers, are often made invisible within narratives of their own family and domestic spaces, despite their role as creators and maintainers of those spaces. This perpetuation of invisibility is threaded throughout the history of artistic practices, (photography especially). Contemporary mother-artists Sally Mann and Elinor Carucci confront and unapologetically reflect their singular experience(s) with motherhood through their photography, which addresses the symbiotic dyads of mother-child and mother-artist. This dissertation analyzes Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen’s and Kevin J. Vanhoozer’s theological method, in order to understand its structural elements, and thereby to facilitate comprehension of their missional doctrinal hermeneutics, and the ramifications of those hermeneutics for the construction and development of Christian theology. Missional doctrinal hermeneutical models conceive the missional dimension of doctrine in various ways. Some privilege the maintenance of theological identity cohering with the foundational sources of theological authority. The purpose of this study was to discover the preferred and used English vocabulary learning strategies of Saudi Arabic-speaking English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. In the light insufficient empirical and theoretical studies exploring the complex structure of vocabulary learning by Arabic-speaking ESL learners, this study investigated which strategies students viewed as significant in assisting them in learning new English vocabulary. Finally, the study sought to identify Saudi Arabic-speaking student attitudes toward and motivations for learning English as a second language; and whether these attitudes influenced which vocabulary learning strategies they preferred and used commonly.

This study qualitatively explored the preparedness of African American pastors to meet the needs of parishioners with addictions. Findings indicated that African American pastors do not always perceive themselves to be prepared to address issues of addiction, and existing cultural barriers challenge collaboration between human services practitioners and African American pastors. Findings also revealed that despite existing cultural barriers, African American pastors are willing to collaborate with professionals who offer educational opportunities in culturally relevant ways. Human services professionals’ ability to understand cultural nuances of African American pastors is of paramount concern to effectively enhance the quality of life for …

In this dissertation I will consider how two 13th century theologians, William of Auxerre (1156-1231) and St. Thomas Aquinas (1224-1274), explored the question, "Whether the same thing can be known (demonstratively) and (believed by faith)" (utrum idem sit scitum et creditum). Both denied that this was possible, but they differed in the relative epistemic priority of faith and knowledge. Aquinas thought that demonstrative knowledge has epistemic priority over faith: for example, if someone knows a proof for God's existence, then they know that God exists, and it is impossible for them to have faith that God exists.
