Traveling Tropes: Race, Reconstruction, And "Southern" Redemption In The Story Of Evangelina Cisneros, Thomas Genova Feb 2021

Traveling Tropes: Race, Reconstruction, And "Southern" Redemption In The Story Of Evangelina Cisneros, Thomas Genova

Spanish Publications

This essay considers the entanglement of race, gender, and imperialism in U.S. discourse on Evangelina Cisneros, a white Cuban woman imprisoned in a Havana jail during her country’s final War for Independence from Spain (1895–1898). I argue that, an event historically tied to the colony’s abolition of slavery, Cuban Independence in writings about Cisneros becomes discursively imbricated with the reconsolidation of white supremacy in the U.S. South following the Civil War. The study establishes a dialogue between U.S. discourse on the events published in the late 1890s – the articles on the affair that appeared in The New York Journal …

Hagar And Potiphar’S Wife: A Representation Of Egypt In Judaism And Islam, Nardine Attia Feb 2021

Hagar And Potiphar’S Wife: A Representation Of Egypt In Judaism And Islam, Nardine Attia

Capstone and Graduation Projects

As a nation and land, modern Egypt has gradually been depicted as a female. Considering Egypt’s prominence in Judaism and Islam, from a close reading of Jewish and Islamic texts pertaining to two Egyptian women—Hagar and Potiphar’s wife— various similarities could be noted between these female figures and Egypt as portrayed in the two Abrahamic religions. While Potiphar’s wife seems to be more representative of Egypt in Judaism and Islam, the different portrayal of both women across religious texts provides each with a space to reflect different aspects defining Egypt in each religion.

Journal of Refugee & Global Health

Introduction: In Africa, COVID-19 associated stigmatization still remains the contextual factor that poses a challenge for the mitigation and suppression of COVID-19 spread, especially among the illiterate populations. This comparative study was therefore conducted to assess the knowledge and willingness of Ghanaians and Nigerians to associate with COVID-19 survivors.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to collect information from 290 Ghanaian and 220 Nigerian nationals aged 18 years and above between 11th July-30th October 2020. An electronic-based questionnaire was developed to collect information on the public. The data were analyzed with SPSS v 22 and factors influencing knowledge and willingness …

How Will I Thrive? Developing Designer Professional Identity Among Undergraduate Communication Design Students, Denise Bosler Feb 2021

How Will I Thrive? Developing Designer Professional Identity Among Undergraduate Communication Design Students, Denise Bosler

Education Doctorate Dissertations

A designer’s professional identity is constructed throughout a designer’s life and is developed through life experiences and education. While understanding the general importance of a professional identity is often clear to recent design graduates, developing it requires becoming self-aware of what traits constitutes designer professional identity (DPI). Kunrath, Cash and Yi-ling (2016) define DPI as the synthesis of personal attributes and design skills. However, the development of this full complement of DPI traits is often ignored and ill-supported in design education curriculum. A student’s DPI, if under-developed, can be a barrier to successfully transitioning from student to professional. Design educators …

Washback Of An English Language Assessment System In A Malaysian University Foundation Programme, Umed Bokiev, Arshad Abd. Samad Feb 2021

Washback Of An English Language Assessment System In A Malaysian University Foundation Programme, Umed Bokiev, Arshad Abd. Samad

The Qualitative Report

Washback refers to the influence of language assessment on teaching and learning. In contrast to the wealth of studies involving external large-scale language examinations, scant research has been conducted to explore the influence of internal language assessment on instruction, particularly in the context of a university foundation programme. This qualitative study investigated the washback effects of an English language assessment system (ELAS) on the teaching and learning of English in a Malaysian university foundation programme. Apart from an in-depth analysis of official documents on the ELAS, we conducted individual semi-structured interviews with three curriculum and assessment developers, three English language …

Efficacy Of Bringing Higher Education To The Tribal Rural Community In Southern Philippines, Miezelle Mae G. Sayson, Gina Fe Causin Ph.D., Grace Marie Patrick

Diversity Conference

Abstract

Bringing tertiary or higher education to the tribal community in Southern Philippines was very effective. There are more tribal members who are now beginning their higher education degrees. This means that there are more tribal individuals who are in their way to get their higher education degree in two to three years. With their higher education diploma, the members of the tribal community will have better access to higher paying jobs. These members will become role models of the younger generation in the tribal communities.

Destiny, Agency, And Adaptation: Climate Change From A Historical Perspective, Seton Hall University, Department Of History

Symposium in Comparative History

From the Ice Ages of the past to the rapid and intensifying warming of the Anthropocene, only the most ardent skeptic would deny that the earth's climate has changed over time; but what does it mean to think about climate change in historical perspective? In recent years, historians have pointed to manifold ways long-term trends in temperature and weather patterns have shaped and constrained human migration, subsistence, trade, and war. Other historians have explained how nations, empires, and peoples responded to changing climatic conditions, and some believed they could change their place's climate through particular social and economic practices. Put …

Review Of Lisa Kemmerer's Sister Species: Women, Animals, And Social Justice, Marine Lercier

Between the Species

What do we have in common with animals, and what do these women have in common? We are Sister Species, if not sisters at all. Lisa Kemmerer invites us to realize that we are more alike than different and to become aware of what our animal brothers and especially sisters experience: the suffering they endure because of our absurd inconsistencies and oppositions - even within the animal rights movement, often unbeknownst to us. The goal: more effective discourse and action, educating us to the other in the face of a norm imposed by a power, a discourse of normalization …

Ladylike In The Extreme: The Propogandism Of Sarah Forbes Bonetta, Britain's "African Princess", Megan Orr Feb 2021

Ladylike In The Extreme: The Propogandism Of Sarah Forbes Bonetta, Britain's "African Princess", Megan Orr

Student Works

While visiting an African kingdom in 1851, British naval captain Frederick Forbes rescued a five year-old girl from a sacrificial ritual, brought her to England, and presented the girl to Queen Victoria. Her Majesty was taken with the girl and made her a ward of the Crown. Christened Sarah Forbes Bonetta, she was raised in the public eye and bestowed the endearing moniker of “Britain’s African Princess”. A seemingly heartwarming tale, Bonetta’s life played out as an experiment that became Victorian Britain’s ultimate propaganda. Her African history, distinct features, and intelligence were ubiquitously highlighted. This living testament to the “civilizing” …
