The Choata Mandir Museum - The Mandir, Ryan Kilcoyne

Bryant University Undergraduate Journal

The mission of The Choata Mandir Museum is to embrace the aesthetic quality in Hindu art while bringing peace an offering to anyone who visits. We respect the viewpoints of all religions while guiding artistic appreciation through Hindu religion.

Mandir, means church in the English language. The Mandir is the physical building where Hindus worship respective gods and deities, some that are seen in this exhibit. It is structurally designed to bring humans beings and god together, using symbolism to express the ideas and beliefs of Hinduism. Mandir roots are structured in the Vedic Traditions.

Capital Punishment And The Bifurcated Trial System, Alexandra Michalak Feb 2021

Capital Punishment And The Bifurcated Trial System, Alexandra Michalak

Grawemeyer Colloquium Papers

Capital punishment is a long-debated issue in United States public policy, with arguments ranging from complete abolition of the penalty to continuing the punishment in states that wish to do so. Regardless of evolving public opinion, numerous landmark Supreme Court cases have ruled capital punishment as constitutional under the Eighth Amendment, which outlaws cruel and unusual punishment. In Furman v. Georgia (1972), the court ruled in a 5-4 decision that certain applications of the death penalty were unconstitutional, vacating the current processes of capital punishment. After this decision, Georgia then adopted the bifurcated trial system to attempt to practice capital …

The Effectiveness Of Using An Online-Program In Teaching English Vocabulary To Chemistry Students, Farida Kaipbergenova Doctoral Student Feb 2021

The Effectiveness Of Using An Online-Program In Teaching English Vocabulary To Chemistry Students, Farida Kaipbergenova Doctoral Student

Science and Society

In the article the concept «vocabulary» is defined as “all words known and used by a particular person”. The word “vocabulary” generally represents a summary of the words or their combinations in a particular language. Vocabulary knowledge is not something that can ever be fully mastered; it is something that expands and deepens over the course of a lifetime. The emergence of new words will never stop, as will the development of new words.

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

ASL-LEX is a publicly available, large-scale lexical database for American Sign Language (ASL). We report on the expanded database (ASL-LEX 2.0) that contains 2,723 ASL signs. For each sign, ASL-LEX now includes a more detailed phonological description, phonological density and complexity measures, frequency ratings (from deaf signers), iconicity ratings (from hearing non-signers and deaf signers), transparency (“guessability”) ratings (from non-signers), sign and videoclip durations, lexical class, and more. We document the steps used to create ASL-LEX 2.0 and describe the distributional characteristics for sign properties across the lexicon and examine the relationships among lexical and phonological properties of signs. Correlation …

Republican Autonomy : Extending Freedom As Non-Domination, Ezechiel Thibaud Feb 2021

Republican Autonomy : Extending Freedom As Non-Domination, Ezechiel Thibaud

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

In political philosophy, the concept of autonomy is often associated with liberalism: it serves as a justification for the liberal values of state neutrality and value pluralism, and seems coherent with the liberal definition of freedom as the absence of interference. Neo-republicans have pointed out that freedom as non-interference fails to acknowledge the fact that one may be unfree while non-interfered with, while on the other hand, not all forms of interference are freedom-limiting. They have proposed to replace the concept by freedom as non-domination, which they define as the absence of actual or possible arbitrary interference. Although their definition …

Artist Interview - Zach Johnson

SIGNED: The Magazine of The Hong Kong Design Institute

Zach Johnsen is a multi-disciplinary artist and designer, working both in the commercial sphere and fine-art world. He uses graphite, watercolour, pen and ink and acrylic on mostly 2D surfaces and by far his most trusted medium is the Micron pen. He uses them exhaustively to describe an ever-expanding world of ghouls, monsters and misfits — the shady characters in everyday life and how they expose themselves in our world. His work is frenetic and chaotic, an explosion of lines and colour influenced by infomercials, cartoons, sweets and the over-consumption of popular culture. Johnsen has lent his unique style of …

Planting Defamation In Arkansas: A Legal Historical Analysis Of The Development Of Defamation Laws In Arkansas During The 19th Century, Jessica Michelle Beel Feb 2021

Planting Defamation In Arkansas: A Legal Historical Analysis Of The Development Of Defamation Laws In Arkansas During The 19th Century, Jessica Michelle Beel

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the early defamation laws in Arkansas by the constitutions of Arkansas, the laws of Arkansas from 1812 to 1874, and Arkansas case law from 1812 to 1874 as concerning defamation, libel, and slander. This research shows how defamation, libel, and slander developed in Arkansas from early territorial periods to the end of the Reconstruction period. These laws were the foundations and the precedent for today’s defamation statutory and case laws in Arkansas, without these laws, it may be argued that defamation in Arkansas would have been decades behind the American legal system. This research advocates for the …

Reimagining Move: Revolutionary Black Humanism And The 1985 Bombing, Joseph E. Cranston

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the extremist group, MOVE and its founder Vincent Leaphart (a.k.a John Africa) in the context of Revolutionary Black humanism, rather than simply a footnote in the tragic events of May 13, 1985. it explores MOVE's predecessors in the Black Panther movement, including The Black Panther Party and how these organizations and individuals might have influenced MOVE and their aims. In addition, ample examination is given to the role that systemic police brutality and racism, specifically within the Philadelphia Police department and city government played in the decisions that MOVE made as they attempted to create a community …
