A Union Catalog Of Floridiana, Alfred Masbrouck Mar 2021

A Union Catalog Of Floridiana, Alfred Masbrouck

Florida Historical Quarterly

Although the history of Florida is more ancient, is as varied, and as interesting as that of any other state in the Union, much of it is now virtually unknown and little is as well known as it ought to be. While we have profited by the scholarly work of several able historians who have sought and found important sources from which to write of Florida’s history, many others have learned that both primary and secondary material is exceedingly difficult to locate. Also there are general readers, our winter visitors and prospective investors, who wish to know more about Florida, …

The St. Joseph Convention (Continued), F. W. Hoskins

Florida Historical Quarterly

Next year marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the convention which framed Florida’s first constitution. The legislature at its last session provided for the celebration of that centennial at the site of old St. Joseph, where on December 3, 1838 there gathered a body of Floridians which has never been equalled in prominence and ability*. In the last issue of the Quarterly the known facts were told of the decision to hold the convention, the election of delegates, the preparations made for the meeting, and the first day’s proceedings. The account will be continued through the next several numbers. It is …

Events At Prospect Bluff On The Apalachicola River, 1808-1818, Mark F. Boyd

One of the most important branches of commerce during the American colonial period was the Indian trade. Search of opportunities for barter was a powerful motive in French and British exploration, and the trader was the principal Caucasian emissary with whom the primitive Indian came in contact. After the settlement of South Carolina, Charleston became an important center of the southern trade, a position later shared with Savannah. From these points English traders penetrated to the country of the Cherokees and Creeks and later to that of the Choctaws and Chickasaws, where they successfully competed with the French and Spanish. …

The St. Joseph Convention: The Making Of Florida’S First Constitution, F. W. Hoskins Mar 2021

The St. Joseph Convention: The Making Of Florida’S First Constitution, F. W. Hoskins

Florida Historical Quarterly

At the time of its cession to the United States in 1821 Florida’s white population was probably about five thousand. There were only two towns, or settlements, of any importance in the territory, and they were near four hundred miles apart. Considering that, with one exception, Florida was the largest territory or State east of the Mississippi river, it can be imagined what an undeveloped country it must have been; remember too that the interior of the peninsula was yet unexplored and its geography unknown.

Expedition Of Marcos Delgado, 1686, Mark F. Boyd

Florida Historical Quarterly

By the time the Franciscan fathers began their conversion of the Indians in Apalache in 1633, Spain as a world power had long been in decline. Other European governments recognized the growing impotency, and several, including England and France, had begun to seize territory within the limits claimed by Spain across the Atlantic. After the early aggressions in the West Indies, the Spanish authorities in dread of further encroachments that might seriously threaten the security of their hold on New Spain, became, concerned over the extension of French interests in the interior of the continent and were alarmed when news …

The Effects Of Victorian Circulating Libraries On The Conventions Of Society, Kaitlyn M. Clary Mar 2021

The Effects Of Victorian Circulating Libraries On The Conventions Of Society, Kaitlyn M. Clary

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

As an era that is oftentimes categorized as one of the most prudish in British history, it is commonplace to see the Victorian Period as a time that imposed strict moral codes onto people of all classes, genders, and ages. Although the 18th century proved to be quite lenient with the manner in which social behavior was controlled, the 19th century proved to be an era of tension between the social order and individual desire, particularly for the middle and upper classes. With the aid of the Industrial Revolution, many governments found it essential to utilize the newly innovated printing …

Introduction Of Keynote Speaker, Amy E. Anderson Mar 2021

Introduction Of Keynote Speaker, Amy E. Anderson

Proceedings: 2021 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus

It is essential that we understand and learn about the diversity of experiences within the church and its educational institutions—experiences that are either marginalized or completely hidden. It can be difficult to face the full truth about the role of the church and our institutions, including UD, as both liberator and oppressor. We need to understand and embrace both the liberatory power of the faith and the Church’s role in the histories of slavery, segregation, and white supremacy. Without this critical examination, we are not whole. Our speaker tonight will help us on our journey. She raises up the history …
