Asian American And Pacific Islander Presidential Fellows Report, Betty T. Izumi, Bree Kalima Mar 2021

Asian American And Pacific Islander Presidential Fellows Report, Betty T. Izumi, Bree Kalima

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since the 2010 Census, Oregon’s Asian American population has grown by 42.3% and its Pacific Islander population has grown by 57.3%, making these groups the fastest growing in the state (US Census Bureau, 2019; US Census Bureau, 2020a). In the Portland metropolitan area, these populations experienced a growth of 42.1% and 64.7%, respectively (US Census Bureau, 2019; US Census Bureau, 2020a). Although Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) are often lumped together as a monolith, they differ from each other in ethnicity and also culture, politics, socioeconomic status, language, religion, immigration status, and migration and colonization histories. Given the history …

Rejouissance: Wind Symphony Vespers, Andrews University

Concerts and Event Programs 2020-2021

Normally our annual Vespers Concert is part of the Andrews University Music Festival, but due to the pandemic we were unable to welcome our high school students to campus this year. But we will still continue our vespers tradition with a variety of wonderful sacred music, including some lively early American hymn tunes (Rhapsody on American Shaped Note Melodies by James Curnow and A Sacred Suite by Brant Karrick), sturdy hymns of old (God of Our Fathers by Thomas Knox and Be Thou My Vision by Travis Cross), and newer songs of praise (Joy Revisited by Frank Ticheli and Prologue …

The Dream Act And Daca: A History Of Immigrant Children, Sofia Paschero Mar 2021

The Dream Act And Daca: A History Of Immigrant Children, Sofia Paschero

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis writes the history of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM ACT) and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Chapter One gives a background history on immigration reforms in the 20th century. Chapter Two focuses on the history of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM Act). Chapter Three is the immigrant children story. This chapter is an oral history. My main argument is immigrants have always been and still are, easy targets. Politicians create immigrants as scapegoats in order to avoid the social, political, cultural, and economic issues that are affecting people …

Consumerism And Pride: The Fate Of Paris’ Marais “Gayborhood”, Christina M. Csensich Mar 2021

Consumerism And Pride: The Fate Of Paris’ Marais “Gayborhood”, Christina M. Csensich

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the 1980s the Marais neighborhood in Paris, France, became a haven for queer people, specifically gay, white men, filled with queer-owned and queer-centric businesses. By the year 2020, however, these businesses had been priced out by name-brand international corporations. In the 1990s, French television commercials and programs would not speak the word ‘homosexual,’ even when a character was openly queer. By the 2010s, companies regularly featured queer people and gay pride imagery and slogans in their advertising. The queer community in Paris has a unique relationship with the consumer economy, one that ties aspects of queer identity directly to …

The Value Of Sleep: Aura And Aesthetics Of Cohabitation In Juha Lilja's Revision Of Warhol, Christopher Costabile Mar 2021

The Value Of Sleep: Aura And Aesthetics Of Cohabitation In Juha Lilja's Revision Of Warhol, Christopher Costabile

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis positions Juha Lilja’s 2013 digital video work, Sleep, as a prime example of what the author terms an “aesthetics of cohabitation” — a newly suggested method of artistic creation set in opposition to capitalist society’s commodification of both space and time, represented here through the work of Robert Hassan and Jonathan Crary. Lilja’s eight-hour-long video work, which is accessible on YouTube, is a reimagining and re-envisioning of Andy Warhol’s film of the same name. It subverts the intended function of digital streaming platforms while using digital technology to meet aesthetic criteria in shot length and overall duration, which …

The Mass Is The Medium: Marshall Mcluhan And Roman Catholic Liturgical Change, Ashil D. Manohar Mar 2021

The Mass Is The Medium: Marshall Mcluhan And Roman Catholic Liturgical Change, Ashil D. Manohar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The liturgical changes of Vatican II sought to bring a period of renewal to the Catholic laity by encouraging active participation and making the Mass more simple to understand. However, the time after the Council was characterized by confusion and disengagement by the laity. I will be discussing three significant changes to the liturgy at this time, The change from Latin to the vernacular, the change in the orientation of the altar and priest, and the change in acoustics, sound, and music. I will be examining all of these changes through the media theory of Marshall McLuhan, famous for coining …

Empress Nur Jahan And Female Empowerment: A Critical Analysis Of A Long-Forgotten Mughal Portrait, Angela N. Finkbeiner Mar 2021

Empress Nur Jahan And Female Empowerment: A Critical Analysis Of A Long-Forgotten Mughal Portrait, Angela N. Finkbeiner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a study of a seventeenth-century watercolor portrait of the Mughal EmpressNur Jahan (r. 1611-1627). Titled Nur Jahan Holding a Musket and created by court painter Abu’l Hasan, the painting has not been the subject of a scholarly work before. In this unorthodox depiction of a female, Nur Jahan is shown sporting androgynous attire while actively loading a matchlock musket. Through visual and textual analysis, I read this portrait as a symbol of an empowered female and argue that once its meaning is decoded it can serve as a complex historical document that complicates Nur Jahan’s persona. Moving …

Temple Of Peace : International Cooperation And Stability Since 1945, Ingo Trauschweizer Mar 2021

Temple Of Peace : International Cooperation And Stability Since 1945, Ingo Trauschweizer

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

This collection raises timely questions about peace and stability as it interrogates the past and present status of international relations.

The post–World War II liberal international order, upheld by organizations such as the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and similar alliances, aspired to ensure decades of collective security, economic stability, and the rule of law. All of this was a negotiated process that required compromise—and yet it did not make for a peaceful world.

When Winston Churchill referred to the UN framework as “the temple of peace” in his famous 1946 Iron Curtain speech, he maintained that international …

Quijano As Quijote: Decoding Madness Through Psychological Theory, Cristian Rivera Mar 2021

Quijano As Quijote: Decoding Madness Through Psychological Theory, Cristian Rivera

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis approaches Alonso’s Quijano’s conversion into Don Quijote from the point of view of a psychologist. The aim of this thesis is to explain the cognitive and psychological experiences that move Alonso Quijano to become Don Quijote and its impact in the development of our current studies of the mind. Thus, one specific question will direct my project although this question will be addressed using a multidisciplinary psychologist approach. The research question is “How can Alonso Quijano’s psychological experiences and interpretations of the real world be explained today?” This question will be addressed by referencing five episodes in the …

"The Rest Is Lagniappe": The Female Secondary Band Director Experience In Louisiana, Margaret M. Webb Mar 2021

"The Rest Is Lagniappe": The Female Secondary Band Director Experience In Louisiana, Margaret M. Webb

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this case study is to examine the experience of female secondary band directors in southeastern Louisiana. Six female band directors in Louisiana were interviewed using video-conferencing. Of the six, four were middle school directors and two were high school directors. The semi-structured interviews took place in three phases: 1) musical influences and experiences from birth through college, 2) early teaching experience, and 3) current teaching experience. Data analysis included four phases of coding; open, axial, closed, and selective. Coding uncovered multiple themes in the findings. Themes were categorized as the following: (1) Becoming a Band Director, (2) …

Sound Glove: A Development In Collaboration, Emma E. Arends

LSU Master's Theses

Through design and technical work, the collaboration between the areas of Sound and Costume Design have been minimal. When these areas interact, it is usually for the small notes, like the shoes are too loud, or the jewelry is too much. However, in the following chapters I will propose a way to deepen the collaborative relationship between Sound and Costume through a prototype named the Sound Glove. The Sound Glove has been developed through researching previous products, researching for materials, constructing a budget, developing applications of the Sound glove and then creating a prototype. With these steps, the following chapters will …

John Milton, Governor Of Florida, Daisy Parker Mar 2021

John Milton, Governor Of Florida, Daisy Parker

Florida Historical Quarterly

Research on the War for Southern Independence has reached a phase of investigation touching on the political, economic, and social activities of the leaders during and before its outbreak. This research has seldom brought, altogether favorable revelations of the conduct of many of the Confederates in their official capacity. Statesmen of the Lost Cause, by Burton J. Hendricks, the most recent work of this type, assuredly implies a question of the patriotic activity of many Southern political leaders. Specifically are the Confederate governors faced with the charge that they hindered the successful political and military operations of the Confederacy. An …

That “Odd Being” De Brahm, Charles L. Mowat Mar 2021

That “Odd Being” De Brahm, Charles L. Mowat

Florida Historical Quarterly

Among the many interesting and distinguished figures who in one way or another were connected with the small community of British East Florida during its brief history none is more intriguing than its first surveyor general, William Gerrard De Brahm. A man whose versatility of genius went beyond even that of the typical eighteenth-century dilettante: a surveyor, engineer, botanist, astronomer, meteorologist, student of ocean currents, alchemist, sociologist, historian and mystical philosopher; he was also something of an eccentric in character, whose peculiarities are heightened for us by the odd ways in which his imperfect knowledge of the English tongue expressed …

British And Spanish Fortifications Of Pensacola, 1781-1821, Stanley Faye

Florida Historical Quarterly

Late in the war for the independence of the United States, Spain joined France and this country in their contest with British power. The Spanish commandant of St. Louis sent a. company across the Illinois prairies to attack a British post beyond Lake Michigan; a larger force from New Orleans occupied the district of Baton Rouge and other western regions of British West Florida, and in March 1781 the governor of Spanish Louisiana came by land and sea and laid siege to British Pensacola.

The Proposed Division Of The Territory Of Florida, Walter Martin Mar 2021

The Proposed Division Of The Territory Of Florida, Walter Martin

Florida Historical Quarterly

Florida was ceded to the United States by Spain in 1821 as two quite separate provinces, East and West Florida. East Florida had grown up in the St. Johns river section and around the ancient city of St. Augustine. Bathed in Spanish tradition and custom, this section felt no dependence on or interest in West Florida which was centered some 400 miles to the west at Pensacola. There were virtually no towns between the two capitals, and most of the vast wilderness between St. Augustine and Pensacola was inhabited by Indians who were none too friendly. By nature the two …

Florida’S Part In The War With Mexico, T. Frederick Davis Mar 2021

Florida’S Part In The War With Mexico, T. Frederick Davis

Florida Historical Quarterly

The capture of a battalion of United States troops by Mexican forces on the Texas side of the Rio Grande, the disputed boundary, followed by an expedition into Mexico proper by General Zachary Taylor precipitated the Mexican war. When reports of these events reached Washington, Congress on May 12, 1846, passed “An Act providing for the prosecution of the existing war between the United States and the Republic of Mexico". The following day, the act was approved by the President, who issued his proclamation that war existed between the two republics. The Mexican Congress declared war against the United States …
