A Memorial To James Alexander Robertson, Florida Historical Society Mar 2021

A Memorial To James Alexander Robertson, Florida Historical Society

Florida Historical Quarterly

James Alexander Robertson published little Florida history; but a large part of what has been published during the past quarter-century, and much that is still to be published and still to be written, is and will be the better because of his years of work with and for the writers. And some of that history would not have been written except for him.

Names Of The St. Johns River, Herbert M. Corse Mar 2021

Names Of The St. Johns River, Herbert M. Corse

Florida Historical Quarterly

Four centuries of history are reflected in the changing names of the St. Johns river. From earliest times the leaping surf on the bar which marked the entrance was noticed by coastal explorers. The great volume of water coming from the river was obstructed by a shallow bar which caused a turbulent appearance and earned the river its first name, Rio de Corrientes (River of Currents). This name appears on the earliest known map of the De Soto expedition. Here the southern region and its coast from Cape Hatteras around Florida and beyond the Rio Grande is remarkably accurate in …

God’S Protecting Providence: A Journal Of Jonathan Dickinson, Charles M. Andrews Mar 2021

God’S Protecting Providence: A Journal Of Jonathan Dickinson, Charles M. Andrews

Florida Historical Quarterly

Toward the end of September, 1696, a group of shipwrecked people found themselves the captives of a petty tribe of Florida Indians in an Indian town, five miles south of the place of their disaster and about eighteen miles north of the present island of Palm Beach on the south side of a body of water now known as Jupiter Inlet. Nearby was one of the many oyster-shell mounds of the eastern coast of Florida, which is still there though much reduced in size. In this Indian town the members of the ship’s company remained for two days, not ill-treated …

Philip Freneau On The Cession Of Florida, Lewis Leary Mar 2021

Philip Freneau On The Cession Of Florida, Lewis Leary

Florida Historical Quarterly

Among American men of letters who have paid tribute to Florida-and perhaps, with the exception of William Bartram, the earliest of them-we may now number Philip Freneau, the “Poet of the American Revolution”. Unlike many others, Freneau apparently never saw Florida, though for a period of years between 1785 and 1790 he was master of a coastal vessel which occasionally called as far south as Savannah. His poem on Florida was written when he was an old man, almost seventy. Living in retirement on his farm in New Jersey, he nevertheless still watched with interest the development and expansion of …

Spanish Colonial Contacts With The Ais (Indian River) Country, Charles D. Higgs Mar 2021

Spanish Colonial Contacts With The Ais (Indian River) Country, Charles D. Higgs

Florida Historical Quarterly

The narratives of the early explorers and the Spanish archives of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are replete with references concerning shipwrecks in the Bahama channel. This passage which gave to Florida its strategic importance, offered a course with more favoring winds and a safer route for the homeward-bound treasure fleets from Mexico, but was in itself distinctly hazardous. Ships and even whole fleets were too often wrecked all along the “Banda del Sur”, or South Coast, from St. Augustine to the lower keys. The majority of these disasters occurred along that bight of the shore, south of Cape Canaveral, …

Castle St. Mark And The Patriots Of The Revolution, Albert Manucy Mar 2021

Castle St. Mark And The Patriots Of The Revolution, Albert Manucy

Florida Historical Quarterly

CASTILLO DE SAN MARCOS is a token of Spain’s determination to protect her vast New World riches in the face of seemingly inexorable English rivalry, encroachment, and actual piracy. This aged citadel, renamed Fort Marion by the Americans, is now Castillo de San Marcos National Monument at St. Augustine. Engineer Ignacio Daza laid the first stone for the foundations in 1672, and the fort became a focal point of colonial culture - Spain’s last impregnable outpost on the shores of the North Atlantic. Now, with the passage of two and a half centuries, it represents to us something of the …

Censorship And The Satanic Verses: Policing Blasphemy In A Secular World, Alixa Brobbey Mar 2021

Censorship And The Satanic Verses: Policing Blasphemy In A Secular World, Alixa Brobbey

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Free speech is currently a hotly debated topic in the world of arts. This thesis traces the history and abolition of blasphemy law in England in light of its relationship with censorship in English literature. I examine the Rushdie Affair and its legacy, particularly in comparison to the Gay News trial. Building on previous scholarship, I examine the arguments that hate speech laws serve as a replacement for blasphemy law. I conclude with the suggestion that hate speech laws be amended to include a clause specifying that works of artistic merit cannot be prosecuted under such laws, mirroring the language …

Hor Bouks: Or, Her Book: Finding Women Readers, Writers, & Producers In Early Modern Literature, Rebecca Fitzsimmons Mar 2021

Hor Bouks: Or, Her Book: Finding Women Readers, Writers, & Producers In Early Modern Literature, Rebecca Fitzsimmons

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

The impact of women on the history of literature can be difficult to track, but they made important contributions to writing, publishing, and collecting. This short talk focuses on works in the Rare and Fine Book Collection in the Milner Library Special Collections department, with a particular emphasis on the writer Lady Mary Wroth and the collector Frances Wolfreston. Wroth was the first Englishwoman to publish a complete sonnet sequence and an original work of prose fiction and Wolfreston is considered one of the first notable women book collectors.

The Man In The Tree: The Fantastic As A Bridge Between The Ideal And The Real, Weber Griffiths Mar 2021

The Man In The Tree: The Fantastic As A Bridge Between The Ideal And The Real, Weber Griffiths

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis explores the effect of genre on storytelling, specifically the effect of the Fantastic in creating, within narrative, intrinsic meaning. In life and fiction, there exists a gap between what is ideal and what is real, a gap of mortality. Human’s struggle with this gap results in many forms of creation and meaning making. The Fantastic, as defined by literary critic Tzvetan Todorov, seeks to bridge this gap. In this examination, we take Todorov’s literary critique and apply it to four films of modern fantasy, showcasing the language and mechanics of the genre and its effectual way of bridging …

Journaling On The Transition To College: Foucauldian Approaches In The First-Year Writing Classroom, Daniel J. Metzger Mar 2021

Journaling On The Transition To College: Foucauldian Approaches In The First-Year Writing Classroom, Daniel J. Metzger

Education Doctorate Dissertations

Utilizing the Foucauldian concepts of governmentality and technologies of the self, this qualitative action research study explored how power dynamics inherent in higher education can be recognized and resisted as first-year writing students journal on the transition to college (JTC). Conducted in a suburban community college in the Mid-Atlantic United States during the Spring 2020 semester, the study investigated how college is a feature of governmentality, how writing instructors’ actions interrupt or reinforce college as governmentality, and if journaling on the transition to college acts as a technology of the self, in light of the ways college governs. Journal prompts …
