Historic Artifacts And The Buzzard Cult In Florida, John W. Griffin
Historic Artifacts And The Buzzard Cult In Florida, John W. Griffin
Florida Historical Quarterly
An extensive literature on the archaeology of Florida has been amassed over a considerable number of years. By far the greater part of this literature is purely descriptive, and it is the purpose of this paper to take some of the older materials and interpret them in the light of current archaeological knowledge; knowledge which has advanced at an almost breathtaking rate in the past decade. For our purposes we shall select seven related artifacts from southern Florida; made of gold, silver, brass, stone and wood.
Physicians And Medicine In Early Jacksonville, Webster Merritt
Physicians And Medicine In Early Jacksonville, Webster Merritt
Florida Historical Quarterly
During the years 1829 to 1833, New Ross, a typical plantation of the early nineteenth century, lay on the border of the St. Johns river about four miles above Jacksonville. Of the happenings on the plantation Judge F. Bethune, its owner, kept a comprehensive account in his diary. On Friday, April 5, 1833, he wrote, “Andrew sick.” On Monday, April 8, he recorded, “Went to Jacksonville court Andrew sick,” and on the following day he added, “at Jacksonville returned before dinner with Dr. Hall had Andrew bled.” This account of the treatment of one of Judge Bethune’s slaves in accordance …

The Port Of St. Augustine During The British Regime, Wilbur H. Siebert
The Port Of St. Augustine During The British Regime, Wilbur H. Siebert
Florida Historical Quarterly
A little more than six miles of Anastasia island, eastward of St. Augustine, is shown on the old map by De Brahm, one-time surveyor-general for the Southern District of British America. The channel is depicted and, less than a mile east of the fortress or “castle,” the bar. The Look-out Tower stands two thirds of the island’s width at that point from its inner side, a little more than a fifth of a mile from its outer side, and half a mile from the shore directly north. De Brahm’s survey was made in 1765 and 1766. On a much earlier …

Resources For The History Of The British Floridas, Florida Historical Society
Resources For The History Of The British Floridas, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
As is well known, the history of Florida falls naturally and very definitely into periods of nationalities. Of these the British era is the most sharply defined. And this is the only period whose history has largely been written-which means that, except for the details of the general history and for certain subjects, the materials available have mostly been used. For this British occupation these resources are mainly governmental archives in the Public Record Office in London. That mass of documents has been used by writers on specific subjects, but for general coverage there are two works: Professor Mowat’s on …
Tiger Tail, Kenneth W. Porter
Tiger Tail, Kenneth W. Porter
Florida Historical Quarterly
The career of Thlocklo Tustenuggee (Fish Warrior), better known by his nickname of Tiger Tail, who was one of the most determinedly hostile of the Seminole chiefs in the war of 1835-42, may be of no great importance. It has, however, already received sufficient attention to justify, it would seem, the addition of new information. The standard account, found in Sprague, is that he died, perhaps of homesickness, shortly after his transportation from Florida. It has, however, been more recently asserted that Tiger Tail never left Florida, but, substituting one of his. warriors, who had been beaten into unrecognizability in …
Writing Local History, Lillie B. Mcduffee
Writing Local History, Lillie B. Mcduffee
Florida Historical Quarterly
Probably in every one of Florida’s sixty-seven counties there is waiting for some aspiring writer of history a wealth of material which could be used effectively in building a county or local history. This is a field of endeavor which in Florida has largely been neglected, and one which should arouse the pride of Floridians over the State who may be history-minded.
Pioneer Florida: The First Session Of The Legislative Council Of Florida, T. Frederick Davis
Pioneer Florida: The First Session Of The Legislative Council Of Florida, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
Conformably to the law, the first Legislative Council of the Territory of Florida was to meet at Pensacola on Monday, June 10, 1822. On that day several members met, but owing to lack of a quorum occasioned by the non-arrival of the East Florida members they adjourned until the 17th. On the 17th, the East Florida members had not arrived and there was another adjournment. It was not until July 22 that the Council organized with a quorum attained through the arrival of some of the members from East Florida. These bare facts are all that official records show; for …
The Seminole Negroes Of Andros Island, Bahamas, John M. Goggin
The Seminole Negroes Of Andros Island, Bahamas, John M. Goggin
Florida Historical Quarterly
In a recent article in this journal, Kenneth W. Porter has raised the question of the identity of the Indian negroes of Andros Island in the Bahamas. As the result of investigations on Andros Island in the summer of 1937, it is possible to clarify the problem, and positively to identify the legendary Indians of Andros Island as Seminole Negroes. A more detailed historical investigation of the problem had been contemplated, but present conditions make it impossible to complete the research as originally outlined.
Governor Salazar’S Wheat Farm Project, 1645-1657, Katherine S. Lawson
Governor Salazar’S Wheat Farm Project, 1645-1657, Katherine S. Lawson
Florida Historical Quarterly
The governors of Florida from the founding of St. Augustine in 1565 to the evacuation in 1763 were continually faced with food shortage, even with starvation; for St. Augustine knew hunger pangs many times, when ships bringing supplies to the Presidio were wrecked, were captured by pirates, or in some years failed to be sent from Mexico with the flour ordered furnished to Florida by the king’s command. So of much interest are the records of a project, covering the years 1645 to 1657, for a wheat farm (trigo hacienda) the result of the determination of Governor Salazar (who may …

The Contest For Pensacola Bay And Other Gulf Ports, 1698-1722, Part I, Stanley Faye
Florida Historical Quarterly
John Law’s Mississippi Bubble of speculation began to inflate itself on September 26, 1717, when Law’s Company of the West made ready to colonize Louisiana. Yet Law in Paris already knew that a sandbar had blocked up the one seaport of Louisiana that he thought suitable for receiving his transatlantic vessels. Five years later the bubble persisted only in memory, the bubble-maker lingered in exile and necessity persuaded light-draft French shipping to enter the Mississippi river. In the course of those five years the Company of the West had searched unavailingly for another deep, suitable and almost necessary port, and …

A Diary Of Joshua Nichols Glenn, St. Augustine In 1823, Joshua Nichols Glenn
Florida Historical Quarterly
When Florida became a part of the United States, Methodists in nearby Georgia and South Carolina looked upon East Florida as their missionary field, and at the annual session of the South Carolina Conference of 1823 which met at Savannah, Joshua Nichols Glenn was chosen and sent to establish a mission at St. Augustine.
Pioneer Florida: An Interpretation Of Spanish Laws And Land Titles, T. Frederick Davis
Pioneer Florida: An Interpretation Of Spanish Laws And Land Titles, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
When Florida was acquired by the United States from Spain through the treaty of cession concluded and signed in 1819 and ratified in 1821, one of the foremost questions arising was that of the confirmation of land titles. For a decade there was a strange uncertainty with regard to property, titles and judicial decrees, which, according to a contemporary writer in the Florida Herald, were “scattered about as floating objects in the wide ocean of Law.” He goes on to say, “This confusion cannot be supposed to arise from any intention or design in the high contracting parties [the governments …

The Florida Banditti, 1783, Joseph B. Lockey
The Florida Banditti, 1783, Joseph B. Lockey
Florida Historical Quarterly
East Florida was ill at ease on receiving, in the spring of 1783, news of the retrocession of the province to Spain. The necessity of abandoning homes in a land to which government and people alike were attached, together with the uncertainties, vexations, and difficulties of finding new homes elsewhere presented to all a dark picture of the future. In the midst of these apprehensions some of the settlers at least were troubled by the depredations of a group of lawless men whom Governor Patrick Tonyn described as banditti.

As you have doubtless noticed, our Quarterly is growing again. Since the beginning of the war we have averaged only about two-thirds of our former number of pages. We hope the size can be increased steadily. The saving under our budget has resulted in a good balance, so we expect to begin publishing documents again, and there will be a few in each future number-for the right kind of documents hold a large and important part in the writing of history.

Pioneer Florida: Jackson’S Premature Proclamation, 1821, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
The treaty of “Amity, Settlement and Limits” by which Spain ceded the Floridas (East and West) to the United States, was concluded and signed on February 22, 1819, but ratifications were not exchanged until February 22, 1821 - both transactions coincidentally being on the anniversary of George Washington’s birth. On March 10, 1821, General Andrew Jackson was appointed to take over the Floridas from Spain, and assume their government pending their formal creation as a territory of the Union. The commission bestowed upon him the title: Governor of the Floridas, exercising all the powers and authorities heretofore exercised by the …
Florida's Population In 1845, Dorothy Dodd
Florida's Population In 1845, Dorothy Dodd
Florida Historical Quarterly
The first census of the State of Florida was taken in the summer of 1845. The census takers were slow in making their returns, and data for only 17 of the 26 counties were submitted to the adjourned session of the General Assembly, which met in November. The census was actually taken, however, in every county except St. Lucia and Dade, a total of 66,381 inhabitants being reported.
