The Prosperity Ethic: Neoliberal Christianity And The Rise Of The New Prosperity Gospel In The Philippines, Erron Medina, Jayeel S. Cornelio

Development Studies Faculty Publications

A new prosperity gospel is emerging in the Philippines. We call it the prosperity ethic. Its dimensions set it apart from the previous incarnation of the prosperity gospel, which emphasized tithing and confessing. Specifically, the prosperity ethic values upward mobility and uses biblical principles for the acquisition of practical skills to become rich. We make our case by drawing on the writings of Bo Sanchez and Chinkee Tan, two of the most influential prosperity-oriented preachers in the country. The prosperity ethic has three dimensions: the morality of wealth (believing right), the prescribed mindset (thinking right), and the practical skills to …

Sheep Replace Pronghorn: An Environmental History Of The Mono Basin, Robert B. Marks

Introduction: “Speaking To The Eyes”—Reassessing The Enlightenment In The Digital Age, Ileana Baird

All Works

This introduction provides a brief survey of the evolution of data visualization from its eighteenth-century beginnings, when the Scottish engineer and political scientist William Playfair created the first statistical graphs, to its present-day developments and use in period-related digital humanities projects. The author highlights the growing use of data visualization in major institutional projects, provides a literature review of representative works that employ data visualizations as a methodological tool, and highlights the contribution that this collection makes to digital humanities and the Enlightenment studies. Outliers, Connectors, And Textual Periphery: John Dennis’S Social Network In The Dunciad In Four Books, Ileana Baird Mar 2021

Outliers, Connectors, And Textual Periphery: John Dennis’S Social Network In The Dunciad In Four Books, Ileana Baird

All Works

This chapter uses social network analysis to visualize the fields of relations involving John Dennis, the most important critic of the first half of the eighteenth century, with the other protagonists in Alexander Pope’s satire, The Dunciad in Four Books (1743). By using visualizations generated by GraphViz, a program that creates topological graphs from sets of dyadic relations, and ShivaGraph, a tool that helps visualize large networks and navigate through them as through a map, this chapter brings to light data that is structurally embedded in the poem but not immediately legible given the large amount and complexity of information. …

The Contest For Pensacola Bay And Other Gulf Ports, 1698-1722. Part Ii, Stanley Faye

Florida Historical Quarterly

The brothers Lemoyne began Louisiana’s war against Mexico, as told in part one of this narrative. Francois Blondel de la Tour continued it. One month after the fall of San Carlos (at Pensacola bay) the commandant of Natchitoches led the six men remaining in his garrison against San Miguel de Adaes, the nearest Spanish mission of Texas. He captured one of the two Spanish soldiers. who formed the garrison there, but neither Blondel nor Governor Alarcon at Mission Dolores (near Nacogdoches, Texas) possessed military strength for further operations. Natchitoches waited in stalemate until the Company of the Indies should open …
