The Origins Of The Pledge Of Allegiance, Paul T. Zurheide Apr 2021

The Origins Of The Pledge Of Allegiance, Paul T. Zurheide

Publications and Research

To some, the Pledge of Allegiance is a patriotic celebration of the nation, as it was advertised since its beginning. However, it is not simply a salute to a flag. It is also vow of loyalty to the nation, a vow that is consistently repeated by schoolchildren to ensure that loyalty is ingrained in them from the start, before they can even cognitively grasp the meaning of a vow, loyalty, or even the nation. This is because when the Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892, the United States, and its people, were undergoing tremendous change. It was becoming a …

Gothic Elements In J. K. Rowling’S Prisoner Of Azkaban, Kayla J. Baur Apr 2021

Gothic Elements In J. K. Rowling’S Prisoner Of Azkaban, Kayla J. Baur

Publications and Research

Gothic fiction is a genre of literature that tells a story of terror or suspense, and does this by employing dark scenery, eerie narrative devices, and atmospheres of gloom and mystery. It is a genre that has been ever-evolving since its first true emergence in the eighteenth century, and a prime example of this evolution is the modern Harry Potter book series by J. K. Rowling which employs gothic elements into its otherwise predominantly fantasy-fiction genre. For the purpose of this paper, the focus lies on the third installment of the series,  Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which …

A Commentary On The Interpretation Of Dreams, Kayla J. Baur Apr 2021

A Commentary On The Interpretation Of Dreams, Kayla J. Baur

Publications and Research

Sigmund Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams explains the role of the theory of psychoanalysis as it pertains to dreams. Freud then leads into the idea of how psychoanalysis as a theory applies to literature. Along with Oedipus Rex, Freud uses William Shakespeare’s Hamlet to exemplify the way in which literary texts express the desires, emotions, and/or memories of the unconscious mind, just as dreams-thoughts (unconscious desire) display themselves in dreams. Hamlet experiences troubling emotions upon the death of his father as he finds himself referring back to his childhood feelings about him, and thus finds it difficult to exact …

Colony Collapse, Greg Gose

All NMU Master's Theses

Colony Collapse is a novel about longing, loss, and the trauma we carry through the world, focusing on three characters: Daniel Amana, Logan Cassidy, and Malory Bennet as they navigate a hostile environment and attempt to find somewhere to belong, or a way to move on. It is a novel that seeks to answer the difficult question of what we do with a life unfulfilled. Daniel finds the answer in a movement to achieve immortality, Logan in the memories of his sister, and Malory in a challenging case to solve, but what happens when their paths come into conflict?

Amor Fati, Ian Maxton Apr 2021

Amor Fati, Ian Maxton

All NMU Master's Theses

The Abstract is meant, despite what its name suggests, to make a given work definite and knowable, to map its parameters in order that the reader, scholarly or otherwise, can determine the worth of a given work – relative to their needs or interests – without having the inconvenience of reading the work itself. In the world of literary publishing, a paragraph like this is meant to convey the most compelling – read: saleable – features of a text in order to entice consumers to purchase one book over another, to take a certain path within the networks of global …

Arteletra: The Sixties In Latin America And The Politics Of Going Unnoticed, Jason A. Bartles Apr 2021

Arteletra: The Sixties In Latin America And The Politics Of Going Unnoticed, Jason A. Bartles

Purdue University Press Book Previews

ArteletrA analyzes the Sixties in Latin America in order to revisit the core claim of literary and cultural studies to political relevancy in the contemporary world: the task of making visible the invisible. Though visibility can secure rights for the disenfranchised, it also risks subjecting them to the biopolitical and capitalist arrangements of space. What is at stake in this book is a series of aesthetic and ethical tools for engaging in politics—defined here as the potential to disagree—without first passing through visibility. These tools cohere around a practice Bartles calls “the politics of going unnoticed,” which he derives from …

An Abductive Argument For Theism: A Comparative Analysis, Erich P. Reule Apr 2021

An Abductive Argument For Theism: A Comparative Analysis, Erich P. Reule

Masters Theses

A theistic ontological foundation and authority for moral obligations is an essential element of theism. And, any replacement of theism must provide an explanation for moral obligations. As such, the core claims of both theism and atheism depend heavily on the research question of this thesis - What is the foundation and authority of moral obligations?

Theism provides a better explanation for the foundation and authority of moral obligations than the atheist worldview, or the utilitarian and robust normative realist ethical systems. Furthermore, it seems that moral obligations are real, objective, universal and human, and as such are best explained …

Non-Traditional Means Of Worship, Courtney Ann Blanchard Apr 2021

Non-Traditional Means Of Worship, Courtney Ann Blanchard

Masters Theses

The purpose of worship is to praise the God of all and give Him thanks for all He has done. Based on the Old Testament and the New Testament, one thing is certain: God has always desired to have a relationship with His people. However, it was not until the death, resurrection, and ascension of God’s only Son that believers could worship God freely. Now, worship is unhindered. Jesus Christ broke every chain and has become the bridge-way for all God’s people to have a free relationship with Him. This research paper will uncover the biblical principles discovered in the …

Classical Education, Mythos, And Philosophy, Luke Hancock Apr 2021

Classical Education, Mythos, And Philosophy, Luke Hancock

Senior Honors Theses

Classical education offers a superior education K-12 because it is uniquely equipped to incorporate mythos and philosophy, two important parts of an education that are not included as well in other systems of education. Mythos, which has to do with narratives, story, and myth, has significant uses and benefits in many contexts, including religious, cultural, and academic. Philosophy is important in order for one to live the good life, and is lacking in today’s culture of education. These two concepts are emphasized in classical education. They fit into the classical canon and are best taught in a classical context. For …

Husserl And Merleau-Ponty: A Feminist Critique Of The Phenomenological Body, Jasmin M. Makhlouf Apr 2021

Husserl And Merleau-Ponty: A Feminist Critique Of The Phenomenological Body, Jasmin M. Makhlouf

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the phenomenological notion of embodiment, to explain the objectification and coercion that women and their bodies experience on a daily basis. I build the philosophical foundation of this thesis on Husserlian and Merleau-Pontian phenomenology, as well as, their work’s receptions in feminist philosophy of the early 20th century, mainly Simone de Beauvoir, as well as, more contemporary thinkers like Luce Irigaray and Judith Butler. Moreover, the thesis argues for a return to the traditional phenomenological notion of embodiment while incorporating elements of sexuality and sexual difference.

Meridians 20:1, Ginetta Candelario Apr 2021

Meridians 20:1, Ginetta Candelario

Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism

I write this in mid-November of 2020, after one of the most contentious presidential elections in my lifetime. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many states began allowing and even encouraging the use of absentee voting/mail-in ballots to reduce the risk of infection during in-person voting. Although he himself votes by mail, the outgoing president began a systematic and sustained campaign of maligning the legality and validity of absentee ballots, claiming without evidence that they were more vulnerable to “illegal voting” and fraud, and encouraging his constituent base to vote in person on election day....

Entre Mundos Y Fronteras: An Exploration Of Linguistic Visibility And Value In Libraries, Denisse Solis, Jesus Espinoza Apr 2021

Entre Mundos Y Fronteras: An Exploration Of Linguistic Visibility And Value In Libraries, Denisse Solis, Jesus Espinoza

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

In Part of Our Lives: A People's History of the American Public Library, author and library historian Wayne A. Wiegand describes how the mass migration of seven million southern and eastern European migrants between 1893 and 1917 shaped public libraries. “As neighborhoods changed ethnic and racial profile, the public library – main or branch- often became a place where newcomers assimilated.”1 This assimilationist praxis, specifically when it comes to the conscription of the English language, is problematic for library workers and patrons for whom English is not their first or only language and who want to see themselves reflected in …

Capable, Arianna Elise Miller Apr 2021

Capable, Arianna Elise Miller

Theses and Dissertations

"CAPABLE” is a full-length manuscript of poetry. The speaker of the manuscript interrogates her family’s past, specifically the past of her father. The speaker details how her grandmother abandoned her father as a young boy. This story of abandonment, and its aftermath, is expressed through portraits of the speaker’s family members. The most prevalent theme—freedom to choose one’s own path despite familial obligations—is seen through the grandmother’s leaving and the speaker’s own sexual experiences. Both the grandmother and speaker make decisions that alienate them from their families. Their experiences are juxtaposed in a way that presents the grandmother as a …

The History And Influence Of Tim Zimmerman And The King’S Brass, Eric Tyler Henson Apr 2021

The History And Influence Of Tim Zimmerman And The King’S Brass, Eric Tyler Henson

Theses and Dissertations

From the Bible’s first mention of the trumpet in the book of Leviticus, to the prescribed uses of the instrument in the Psalms, to the trumpet blasts described in Revelation, the influence of brass instruments in the Christian faith has been present since ancient times. In the 20th century, Tim Zimmerman and his group the King’s Brass would come to the forefront of this tradition, reviving the use of brass in the church as a tool for worship. The King’s Brass has remained a leader in sacred brass music for the last forty years.

Despite humble beginnings as a trumpet …

Step By Step, Iuliia Khamidullina Apr 2021

Step By Step, Iuliia Khamidullina

Theses and Dissertations

STEP BY STEP is a new work of theatre written and performed by me, Iuliia Khamidullina. This script is the one in which I appeared in four performances at the Center of Performance Experiment, within the Department of Theatre and Dance at USC. It tells the story of how a beloved daughter learns to become an artist, even as life’s difficulties are thrown in her way. And it examines her teachers, and most particularly her father. It asks the question: who are Siberian men? What makes them unique? And it examines how this daughter learns from her father’s courage and …

Songs For The Journey: The Music Of Pilgrimage, Joshua Taylor Apr 2021

Songs For The Journey: The Music Of Pilgrimage, Joshua Taylor

Doctor of Pastoral Music Projects and Theses

Pilgrimage has been a part of Christian experience since biblical times. Creating new stories, pilgrimage affords sacred travelers experiences that transcend nationalism, denominational identity, and cultural borders melding their individual constructs of meaning with communal experiences to create new insights. On these pilgrimages, music has played a significant role in the development of community. While pilgrimage is an independent act, it is also a shared existence with other pilgrims with music serving as a bridge between these two realities. With an estimated 100 million people undertaking pilgrimages at the beginning of the twenty-first century, the rediscovery of pilgrimage, and the …
