Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness worldwide. Unfortunately, the early stages of this disease are poorly understood, which has led to limited treatment options. Investigating normal changes in tissues eventually affected by AMD can further elucidate the mechanisms of disease progression and lead to novel therapeutic targets. The primary cell layer affected in AMD is the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), which forms the outer blood-retinal barrier (oBRB). Beneath the RPE lies Bruch’s membrane, a proteinaceous layer that naturally thickens and stiffens with age. These changes to Bruch’s membrane are also implicated in RPE dysfunction and AMD …

Optimal Drought Management Actions For Cattle Operations On The Laguna Pueblo And Zuni Pueblo Indian Reservations, Tatiana Drugova, Kynda R. Curtis, Man-Keun Kim

In this fact sheet, we examine the drought management options available to cattle operations on the Laguna Pueblo and Zuni Pueblo reservations in New Mexico. Specifically, we discuss the results of a study that evaluated the economic outcomes of two common drought response strategies: herd reduction and supplemental hay purchases. We also provide recommendations for ranchers regarding optimal strategies, i.e., those which would maximize profits, for two rancher types, differentiated by their willingness to accept risk (risk-neutral) or avoid it (risk-averse).

Watermelon is a water-intensive vegetable crop that is sensitive to drought and requires adequate nutrient supply for good yield and fruit quality. It is an important vegetable crop grown on 142,000 acres in the United States and 586 acres throughout Utah. Utah experienced its driest year on record in 2020 during a five-year drought (2019 to 2023). This affected local ecosystems, including the Great Salt Lake, which experienced record-low water levels. The drought also negatively affected the agricultural sector, including watermelon growers. Higher-than-average fertilizer prices in recent years have also threatened watermelon production. Single crystals of LnFe(SO₄)₃(H₂O)₂ (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm; compounds 1–11) and LnFe(SO₄)₃(H₂O) (Ln = Tm, Yb, Lu; compounds 12–14) were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis revealed that the dihydrated compounds (1–11) crystallize in centrosymmetric (CS) structures, with the lanthanide ions adopting eight-coordinate geometries. In contrast, the monohydrated compounds (12–14) exhibit noncentrosymmetric (NCS) structures, where the lanthanide ions are seven-coordinated. Synchronous schedules of reinforcement are a type of schedule of covarion in which the onset and offset of the response are aligned with the onset and offset of the reinforcer. In this study, we used multiple baseline across classes and reversal designs to determine the effects of a synchronous reinforcement schedule, arranged as a group contingency, on disruptive classroom behavior and time spent following rules during independent work periods in three elementary classrooms: 2 first grade and 1 fourth grade. This dissertation aims to study conflicts and protests using a game-theoretic setup. It contains six chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction. Chapter 2 gives a brief review of the related literature. Chapter 3 explores conflicts in the presence of revenge and third party intervention using a game theoretic setup. In chapter 4, I propose a revengecapability function to study the strategic behaviour of the conflicting parties. In chapter 5, I develop a signaling game between the government and protesters to study the phenomenon of protests in the presence of an external shock like the pandemic. This report describes the creation and implementation of a seven‑chapter Open Educational Resource (OER) for Bentley University’s CS 180 – Programming Fundamentals course, developed from the author’s teaching notes, custom examples, and course materials from Fall 2024. The project aimed to provide current, accessible, digital‑first learning resources aligned with modern programming tools, supported by generative‑AI editing in NotebookLM and open‑source formatting tools such as pandoc and Marp. The dynamic development of primary education requires teachers to adopt effective teaching methods. One key factor in improving student learning outcomes is the implementation of appropriate instructional strategies. This study aims to understand and analyze the fundamental principles and core concepts of Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) as an approach to enhancing the quality of learning. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a literature review approach, analyzing 20 relevant studies. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach in IPAS (Science, Environment, and Social Studies) learning, specifically on the topic of the digestive system, in Grade 5 at SD Kanisius Kembaran, Yogyakarta. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data collected through interviews with teachers and students, as well as a review of relevant literature. The findings indicate that the TaRL approach positively impacts student learning outcomes, with approximately 60% of students showing improved comprehension and more active engagement. This study examined the relationship between mental health issues and interest in chemistry courses among Chemistry Education undergraduate students in federal universities in Southeast Nigeria (n = 2500). The research was motivated by increasing academic stress, perceived course difficulty, limited coping resources, and the influence of mental health on motivation, arousal, and self-efficacy. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. A correlational research design was employed. For victims of abuse, safety means hiding. Not just hiding themselves, but also their contact details, their address, their workplace, their roommates, and any other information that could enable their abuser to target them. Yet today, no number of name changes and relocations can prevent data brokers from sharing a victim’s personal information online. Thanks to brokers, abusers can find what they need with a single search, a few clicks, and a few dollars. For many victims, then, the best hope for safety lies in obscurity—that is, making themselves and their information harder to find.

Background

Running in real-world environments often requires using cognitive resources simultaneously with the motor task (dual tasking, DT). Limited existing evidence suggests that DT reduces running speed. Movement variability is essential for a healthy, adaptable motor system. DT has been shown to affect movement variability during walking. Nonetheless, it remains unclear how DT affects spatiotemporal, kinematic, and kinetic parameters and their variability during running.

Research question

In a holdover proceeding, the tenant moved to dismiss, arguing the landlord failed to plead good cause for eviction as required by the Good Cause Eviction Law (GCEL), claiming the landlord did not qualify for the "small landlord" exemption. The court found the landlord owned more than ten units in New York State, including an owner-occupied two-family home (where the second unit counted toward the limit based on the Certificate of Occupancy) and a vacant unit under construction. Therefore, the court held the landlord was not exempt from GCEL, and thus failed to provide the necessary good cause and notices. …

In this licensee holdover proceeding, the tenant successfully moved to amend the answer to include an affirmative defense alleging the landlord's failure to use the mandatory Notice of Petition form required by Administrative Order 163/19 and 22 N.Y.C.R.R. § 208.42[b]. The court denied the landlord's cross-motion to amend the defective notice of petition, holding that such a substantive error is a fatal, non-amendable defect, especially since the landlord had been on notice of the mandatory form for over five years. The petition was dismissed without prejudice, as the defect pertains to an element of the landlord's prima facie case.

The landlord initiated a Good Cause Eviction Law (GCEL) holdover proceeding, seeking possession based on the tenant's alleged failure to pay rent. After a trial, the court dismissed the petition with prejudice, finding the landlord did not establish good cause under RPL § 216[1][a][i]. While the tenant sometimes paid rent late, evidence showed consistent curing of arrears, and the tenant was fully current before the predicate notice. The court determined that for "failure to pay rent due and owing" under GCEL, chronic delinquency and prejudice to the landlord must be proven, which was not demonstrated here.
