Assessing eutrophication in rivers is difficult compared to lakes and coastal waters, because most algal biomass occurs on the riverbed and flows interact and co-vary with production (Biggs and Close, 1989; Bernhardt et al., 2018). Riverine eutrophication is typically assessed using algal biomass and water column nutrients (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2000), but biomass is highly variable and labor-intensive to measure, while nutrient concentrations often underestimate enrichment due to rapid biological uptake (Dodds and Smith, 2016). Disassembly tasks in human–robot collaboration (HRC) environments present safety challenges due to hazardous materials, control system variability, and physically demanding operator tasks. To address these challenges, we propose an AI-augmented risk assessment framework integrating System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). Effective physician-patient communication is fundamental to clinical competence, yet traditional simulation-based training methods using standardized patients and high-fidelity manikins are costly, resource-intensive, and difficult to scale. This dissertation presents CLiVR (Conversational Learning system in Virtual Reality), an LLM-driven system that integrates large language models and 3D avatars to simulate doctor-patient interactions for medical communication training.

CLiVR addresses three key limitations in existing virtual reality medical training platforms. Although fitness-related traits are expected to be under strong selection, traits related to reproduction are often quite variable within plant populations. We used data from two large greenhouse experiments to quantify phenotypic, genetic, and environmental variation, as well as genetic tradeoffs that might help explain the maintenance of withinpopulation variation in four traits related to sexual or vegetative reproduction in tall goldenrod (Solidago altissima). The goldenrod population exhibited high levels of both phenotypic and genetic variation for capitulum (flower head) number and size, seed production, and rhizome growth. experiences through the theoretical lens of teacher advocacy,

teacher agency, and teacher leadership. This research synthesis

analyzes the current research on the three frameworks in bilingual

education and examines how they intersect. Bilingual teachers

advocated for educational change to address the needs of

emergent bilinguals. Despite various context-specific constraints,

bilingual teachers agentively created bilingual spaces for

linguistically diverse students. Furthermore, bilingual teachers

actively took up leadership roles, demonstrated increased

Tracking hazardous events such as wildfire smoke, coastal oil spills, or chemical releases in natural environments is complicated by turbulent dispersion and molecular diffusion. This study presents a method to localize pollutant sources rapidly and accurately using infinite time-averaged measurements from a multi-sensor network, leveraging the duality between mean forward and adjoint scalar fields. The forward-adjoint duality states that measurements at the sensor (forward feld) are equal to the adjoint field at the source, providing crucial spatial information about the source. This qualitative dissertation explored the academic trajectories of 31 undocumented Latinx students in California who began their postsecondary education at community colleges and graduated from 4-year institutions. Guided by the undocumented community of trust model, which integrates Yosso’s (2005) community cultural wealth framework, Coleman’s (1994) theory of trust, and the newly introduced concept of alliance capital, this study examined how students leveraged seven forms of capital (i.e., aspirational, familial, navigational, social, resistance, linguistic, and alliance) to overcome educational barriers. This dissertation focuses on electoral accountability at the local and national levels. The first chapter focuses on judicial elections in Houston, while the last two chapters forecast the 2024 national election. This first chapter examines whether changes in local crime rates influence voter behavior in partisan judicial elections. Using precinct-level crime and election data from Houston, Texas, this study tests whether a quarterly increase in crime raises the probability that a voting precinct flips from a Democratic to a Republican majority in local district judge elections. This dissertation contains three studies. Each asks how rules or language change the choices people and machines make when outcomes are uncertain. The first study, written with Kiran John, evaluates California’s 2020 cashless bail reform. We use propensity score matching on arrestee records from the windows before and after implementation, and we test whether the shift away from cash bail produced any effect on subsequent offending. It did not. Matched comparisons yield small, statistically insignificant differences across every window we examined. That null result cuts against both sides of the public argument. Female labor force participation (FLFP) in Bangladesh has increased from 29.2% in 2005–06 to 42.8% in 2022, raising important questions about household resource allocation. This study examines the impact of female employment on household expenditure patterns and challenges the traditional unitary model of decision-making. It focuses on how income controlled by women influences spending across essential and non-essential categories. The analysis uses data from the Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. Background: Research on metformin, sulfonylureas, and open-angle glaucoma risk in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has yielded inconsistent findings. This study examined associations between hypoglycemic treatments and glaucoma diagnosis rates.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed electronic health records of newly diagnosed T2DM patients from the Merative™ Explorys® Therapeutic Dataset (2010-2022), comparing three groups: metformin monotherapy, sulfonylureas plus metformin combination, and untreated controls. Propensity score matching balanced demographics, glycemic control, body mass index, blood pressure, lipid levels, and comorbidities. Cox proportional hazards models calculated adjusted hazard ratios for incident glaucoma.

In this study, we systematically synthesized quantitative evidence on the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in enhancing well-being (increase in positive functioning) among retired adults. A comprehensive search across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane was completed in October 2025. This was supplemented by Google Scholar and reference list screening, identifying 5,945 database records and 123 additional sources. Motivation: The availability of large-scale genetic data presents a unique opportunity to study the genetic ancestries of individuals, which requires an efficient and scalable method. The existing global ancestry methods are accurate, but they cannot scale to large genetic datasets. Identity-by-descent (IBD) segments are DNA segments shared by individuals such that they are inherited from a common recent ancestor without recombination. These IBD segments, which reflect co-ancestry, provide an efficient alternative for inferring genetic ancestry.

Endothelin-1 In The Failing Fontan: Pathobiology, Precision Therapeutics, And Future Trial Design, Iman Maiza

The Fontan circulation, devised as definitive palliation for single-ventricle congenital heart disease, imposes systemic venous hypertension, loss of pulmonary arterial pulsatility, and restricted preload reserve. These hemodynamic trade-offs progressively injure the pulmonary vasculature, liver, and lymphatic system, producing late morbidities including elevated pulmonary vascular resistance, Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD), protein-losing enteropathy, and arrhythmias. Endothelin-1 (ET-1), a potent vasoconstrictor and profibrotic mediator, plausibly unifies these complications. Mechanistic studies demonstrate ET-1 upregulation in failed Fontan lungs, activating PLC–Ca²⁺, RhoA/ROCK, and MAPK/ERK cascades to drive vasoconstriction and remodeling. In cirrhotic livers, ET-1 localizes to stellate cells, promoting contraction and fibrogenesis, mechanisms biologically relevant …
