This report covers a three-year partnership between the LSU Social Research and Evaluation Center, East Baton Rouge Parish Schools (EBR Schools), and DreamBox Learning, in which we conducted a longitudinal, multi-method examination of the effectiveness of DreamBox’s tech-based math intervention on EBRPS student performance. The three key research questions – developed with guidance from our Gates Foundation funding partners – are outlined below with abbreviated conclusions. The body of the report provides further detail on the methods, results, and interpretations of our quantitative study. We complement these conclusions with qualitative insights drawn from focus groups with teachers and students.

High healthcare employee turnover rates pose a significant threat to organizational productivity, workforce stability, and patient outcomes. Healthcare leaders are concerned with high employee turnover because it contributes to rising operational costs, employee burnout, and a decline in the quality of patient care. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory of motivation, this qualitative, pragmatic inquiry identified and explored effective strategies that healthcare leaders use to retain employees to maintain organizational productivity and enhance patient outcomes. Background: Electronic health records (EHR) have long held promise for sharing information efficiently, but this remains challenging. This quality improvement initiative sought to improve the accurate documentation of anthracycline and radiation therapy exposures in pediatric oncology patients who were treated at different institutions through a quality improvement methodology and EHR tools. Methods: A custom-built EHR smartform was previously created. Modifications were made to the smartform, and quality improvement methods were utilized to improve receipt of radiation summaries from other institutions and documentation of chemotherapeutic doses. Relationships Between The Dark Triad And Justification Of Morally Debatable Behaviors In College Students, Emma P. Paulson, Terry F. Pettijohn Ii

Psychology

The present study examined the relationship between Dark Triad personality traits and moral judgments in a sample of 68 undergraduate students recruited from psychology courses at a southeastern university. All participants volunteered through an online system and received course research credit for participation. Participants completed the Short Dark Triad Measure to assess levels of psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism, as well as the Revised Morally Debatable Behaviors Scale (MDBS-R), in a controlled laboratory setting. Individuals with strong psychopathic traits were predicted to report greater endorsement of morally debatable behaviors. OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate a nomogram based on T1 and extracellular volume fraction (ECV) mapping derived from cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) for differentiating ischemic from nonischemic cardiomyopathies during the acute phase.

METHODS: This retrospective study included patients who underwent CMR at the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University (internal dataset) and the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (external dataset). The binary black hole signal GW250114, the loudest gravitational wave detected to date, offers a unique opportunity to test Einstein’s general relativity (GR) in the high-velocity, strong-gravity regime and probe whether the remnant conforms to the Kerr metric. Upon perturbation, black holes emit a spectrum of damped sinusoids with specific, complex frequencies. Our analysis of the postmerger signal shows that at least two quasinormal modes are required to explain the data, with the most damped remaining statistically significant for about one cycle. BACKGROUND: Osteochondral allograft (OCA) transplantation is an established surgical intervention for full-thickness chondral defects. Standard preservation (SP) protocols currently allow for OCAs to be stored for a maximum of 28 days after procurement before significant chondrocyte death. An alternative protocol, the Missouri Osteochondral Allograft Preservation System (MOPS), has been shown to allow for grafts to be stored for twice the maximum time allotment as SP.

PURPOSE: To compare clinical outcomes in patients who have undergone OCA transplantation utilizing the extended storage capabilities of the MOPS versus SP protocols.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is one of the most challenging complications following total hip arthroplasty (THA). Traditional management typically involves full revision to ensure comprehensive infection eradication. However, for patients with well-fixed implants, partial revision in a single-stage cementless approach may provide a viable alternative, potentially preserving bone stock and reducing operative time. The relative efficacy of this approach compared with full revision remains to be fully explored. This multicenter study aims to determine whether partial revision in cementless single-stage exchange surgery offers comparable infection control outcomes to full revision for select patients with well-fixed implants.

Criminal law purports to care about the individual culpability of those committing crimes. Individual mental states or defenses based on one’s beliefs are considered foundational to moral responsibility and criminal conviction. The expansion of algorithmic risk assessment tools in the criminal legal system, however, threatens these principles, changing the criminal law subject from an autonomous individual to merely a predicted object. This Article argues that risk assessment tools—now functioning as gatekeepers at both the entry and exit stages of the criminal process, from predictive policing to compassionate release eligibility—have shifted the criminal system away from its foundation in individual culpability. …

Witnessing the subsequent struggle of working-class families, 20th century Christian socialist Roland D. Sawyer was resolved to advocate for a reformed economic structure. This paper is dependent entirely on primary sources in the Roland D. Sawyer Collection, available in the University of New Hampshire's Milne Special Collections. Studying Sawyer's autobiography and various socialist writings illustrates his idea of a good life for the American working-class and how they were to achieve it through the adoption of a socialist doctrine. Low doses of lead (Pb) ions were used in the present study to investigate their effects on photosynthetic efficiency in Brassica juncea. Plants of B. juncea grown for 30, 45, and 60 days were analysed for root and shoot length, pigment content, gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, primary and secondary metabolites, and nonenzymatic antioxidant responses under exposure to hormetic doses of Pb2+. The findings show that low levels of Pb2+ (especially 18- and 36-µM Pb treatments) improve gas exchange metrics, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, root and shoot growth, and increased amounts of chlorophyll, carotenoid, xanthophyll and low amounts of pheophytin as compared …

Postoperative pain following median sternotomy is a major concern in cardiac surgery, contributing to delayed recovery, prolonged mechanical ventilation, extended intensive care unit (ICU) stays, and increased opioid use. Effective postoperative analgesia is essential to optimize recovery and minimize complications such as respiratory depression and chronic pain. Traditional opioid-based regimens, while effective for acute pain relief, are associated with significant adverse effects including nausea, vomiting, pruritus, delirium, constipation, and respiratory compromise. Emerging evidence supports the use of regional anesthesia techniques such as the parasternal intercostal plane (PIP) block as part of a multimodal analgesic approach to minimize opioid requirements. Shallot, a strategic horticultural commodity in Indonesia, is susceptible to biotic stress (e.g., twisted disease) and abiotic stress (e.g., drought). Mycorrhizal fungi offer an environmentally friendly solution to enhance plant resilience. This study evaluated the effects of mycorrhizal application on shallot plants against twisted disease (Fusarium acutatum) and drought stress. Using a randomized complete block design, we assessed growth, disease resistance, and physiological responses. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by Tukey’s honestly significant difference test at a 95% confidence level. Results indicated that mycorrhizal application reduced both the severity and rate of twisted disease development in shallots. …

The goal of this dissertation is to examine the varying perspectives, or frames, of providers regarding decision-making in the NICU, which includes how they view neonates and their families, their roles as providers, and the way their frames possibly impact the care they give to the infants. In this dissertation, I conduct in-depth interviews with 34 NICU providers and professionals that provide their services in the NICU, including doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, various therapists (i.e. respiratory, physical, occupational), and two other providers from two other professions. Rabies virus (RABV) causes fatal encephalitis once it invades the central nervous system (CNS), and treatment options are extremely limited at this stage. We investigated the recombinant RABV variants SPBN, SPBNGA (glycoprotein substitution R333E), SPBNGAK (R333E plus N194K), SPBNGAS (R333E plus N194S), and TriGAS (three copies of the R333E/N194S glycoprotein). We evaluated their cellular tropism and immune activation in an intracerebral mouse infection model using immunohistochemistry and confocal immunofluorescence. SPBNGAK (R333E/N194K) resulted in mixed neuronal and astrocytic infection and lethal disease. In contrast, the R333E/N194S mutations in the GAS variants were associated with reduced neuronal infection and apparent astrocyte-restricted infection …

Traditional family-based elderly care has become increasingly unsustainable due to the pressures of the “4-2-1” family structure and the rising prevalence of empty-nest households.
