In Tuck Everlasting, Natalie Babbitt tells the story of ten-year-old Winnie Foster, who is about to drink from a spring in her family's wood, but is suddenly kidnapped by the Tuck family. They explain that they all drank from that spring 87 years ago and stopped aging. "If you'd had a drink of it today, you’d stay a little girl forever.” Some philosophical thought experiments help us decide if a certain attitude we have towards something is appropriate. Most of us lament our own mortality and fear death. But would an endless life be worth living?

BACKGROUND: Financial hardship encompasses material, behavioral, and psychological domains; however, most research among caregivers of pediatric cancer patients has focused on material hardship. This study examined factors associated with behavioral and psychological financial hardship among caregivers of pediatric cancer patients in Nebraska.

METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of caregivers of children diagnosed within the past 5 years and treated at two pediatric oncology specialty clinics. Behavioral hardship was defined as delaying medical or mental healthcare due to cost, while psychological hardship was measured by worry about ability to pay medical bills. The underrepresentation of minority groups in leadership roles within the pharmaceutical industry constitutes a significant issue, as evidenced by various studies. These studies consistently indicate that individuals from underrepresented groups are less likely to progress into leadership positions. It appears that much of the existing literature discusses African American women as the identified underrepresented group. This dissertation investigates the underrepresentation of minority groups in leadership roles within the pharmaceutical industry. We present an alumina-tip optical fiber Fabry-Pérot interferometric temperature sensor exhibiting high-temperature performance, rapid response, and high resolution. Fabricated by fusion splicing an alumina micro disk directly to a single-mode fiber, the sensor achieves robust, stable operation without complex fabrication processes or adhesives. Experimental evaluation confirms a measurement range extending to 1000°C, with sensitivity of 28.66 pm/°C, a resolution of 0.042°C, and a rapid response time of approximately 13 ms. Compared to state-of-the-art optical fiber FPI sensors, our alumina-tip sensor offers superior overall performance, effectively addressing critical demands for high-resolution, fast-response temperature measurement in extreme environments including aerospace, structural monitoring, …

We present an embeddable hybrid optical fiber sensor based on a cascaded extrinsic Fabry–Pérot interferometer (EFPI) and intrinsic Fabry–Pérot interferometer (IFPI) for simultaneous strain and temperature monitoring in high-performance composite materials. The sensor is fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and is embedded within bismaleimide composite laminates manufactured via an out-of-autoclave process. Experimental results demonstrate linear and decoupled responses to strain and temperature, with the EFPI showing minimal temperature sensitivity (1.7 pm/°C) and the IFPI exhibiting high temperature sensitivity (16.1 pm/°C). This paper presents the deployment and validation of a Brillouin - distributed temperature sensing (DTS) system for real-time thermal monitoring of the spray-cooled upper shell of a 150-ton direct current Electric Arc Furnace (DC EAF) at Big River Steel Plant, Osceola, AR, USA. A four-channel Brillouin DTS system from OZ Optics was employed, with one active channel instrumented using an in-house-fabricated Brillouin scattering-depressed single-mode optical fiber (SMF28e+). Accurate unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) trajectory estimation is essential for autonomous navigation, particularly in GPS-denied environments. Visualodometry and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) approaches require precise camera intrinsic parameters, which are typically obtained through predefined or offline calibration. Instead, in this work, we propose a reinforcement learning (RL)-based self-calibration framework that estimates camera intrinsic parameters directly from monocular video sequences, without requiring prior knowledge of the camera, environment, or calibration targets. Ince-Gaussian (IG) modes are a complete and orthogonal set of solutions to the paraxial wave equation in elliptic coordinates representing a continuous transition between Hermite-Gaussian modes and Laguerre-Gaussian modes. Chip-scale platforms to generate IG beams have great significance for various applications, including optical trapping and micromanipulation of particles, optical communication, and quantum optics. While critical scholarship on Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go often emphasizes bioethics, transhumanism, and the commodification of life, this lens overlooks the novel’s profound engagement with the psychological necessity of visibility. This paper argues that the tragedy of the clones is fundamentally a crisis of recognition, where invisibility is not incidental but structurally produced to facilitate exploitation. Drawing on Caroline Levine’s concept of the "Form of Utility" and Axel Honneth’s Theory of Recognition, this study examines how systemic indoctrination and objectification deny the clones their innate humanity to soothe the conscience of the "normals." Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1645), a celebrated 17th century Baroque painter, depicted the biblical story of Susanna and the Elders six times in her long career of approximately 44 years (1610-1654). The first five were all painted and arranged vertically with Susanna's nude body exposed. Whereas her last Susanna (1652) and consequently her final known painting was painted horizontally with fabric covering, yet skimming Susanna’s nude body underneath. Until now there has been relatively little consideration given to disciplinary agencies’ sanctioning of lawyers who commit or are convicted of crimes, so called “lawyer-criminals.” This is likely because most assume that these offenders make up a tiny percentage of disciplinary cases. It also may explain why jurisdictions continue to employ disparate approaches regarding what types of criminal conduct warrant professional intervention, the appropriate sanctions to impose on lawyer-criminals, and whether lawyers convicted of certain offenses should be automatically excluded from practice.

When interpreting state constitutional provisions, state courts frequently take a "lockstep" approach by adopting the United States Supreme Court's interpretation of analogous federal constitutional provisions. Critics often portray lockstep interpretation as misguided and have identified varieties of lockstepping, including unreflective, reflective, prospective, and methodological lockstep interpretation. This Article contributes to these discussions by identifying several additional forms of lockstep interpretation that have thus far gone undiscussed: lazy, mandatory, atextual, and sticky lockstepping.

Background This study aimed to address the critical gap in the limited application of machine learning (ML) for identifying developmental delays in low-resource settings by developing models to predict off-track development in infants aged 0 to 6 months and identify key predictors.

Methods A cross-sectional study involving 1,995 singleton infants aged 0 to 6 months was conducted in Kaloleni and Rabai sub-counties, Kilifi, Kenya, between March 2023 and March 2024. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that patients with diabetes adopt 7 preventive care measures to improve their health outcomes. The recommendations are to check their blood glucose levels daily, undergo biennial hemoglobin A1c tests, undergo dilated eye exams once every 2 years, engage in regular physical activity, check their feet daily, have annual feet examinations performed by a clinician, and receive diabetes self-management education services (DSMES). Marital status has been found to be associated with positive health outcomes; thus, it is ideal to evaluate if there is an association between marital status and diabetes preventive care.
