Background: Graduate medical education faculty, while responsible for overseeing the clinical training of their residents, are additionally tasked with providing effective resident education. AI offers a potential solution to enhance development and delivery of educational topics to their trainees, while decreasing the time needed to prepare formal education resources. Background Automated adjudication of cardiogenic shock (CS) from unstructured clinical documentation can facilitate clinical case finding and research trial/registry enrollment. While Large Language Models (LLMs) hold considerable promise, commercial cloud-based solutions raise data privacy and cost concerns. We assessed the performance of an open-source, locally run LLM for the adjudication of CS from unstructured progress notes.

Methods Patients from a 22-hospital healthcare system from 2021 to 2024 were identified using ICD-10 codes to form an enriched CS evaluation cohort with a ~1:1 case/non-case ratio. We selected gpt-oss-20b, an open-source LLM capable of running locally on a consumer-grade computer, and tested …

Theses

Background: Rapid Cycle Deliberate Practice (RCDP) simulation has emerged as an innovative approach to strengthening confidence among healthcare learners and professionals. Grounded in Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, RCDP emphasizes structured repetition, immediate feedback, and skill refinement through cycles of performance, reflection, and reapplication.

Methods: Senior-level respiratory therapy students participated in either a traditional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) simulation or an RCDP CPR simulation as part of their scheduled coursework. After completing the simulation, students participated in a post‑simulation survey, and scores were compared between the two groups.

Fire has shaped human evolution, social organisation, and technological development, yet modern fire science remains anchored in categories derived largely from Western experience: wildland fires, the wildland–urban interface, and urban conflagrations. These frameworks obscure a fourth, largely overlooked regime– village fire– rural settlements that lack the structural protections, materials, and services characteristic of urban areas. In the Philippines, where rural settlement dominated into the twentieth century, village fire was the principal way people encountered fire risk. Impacted persons have shared accounts of traumatic birthing experiences, and advocates have raised the alarm on the urgent need to advance birth justice. Despite this raised awareness, women and birthing people are still dying and suffering unnecessarily. Even more, systems are still structured to impede birthing choices, particularly those from marginalized communities such as Black and Indigenous women. Notably, over 80% of U.S. maternal deaths are preventable, according to federal government data. Ironically, the same laws and systems that have created, perpetuated, and tolerated birth injustices can be leveraged to move the country towards birth justice. On the national level, …
