Silent Messengers In The Nano-World: Harnessing Extracellular Vesicles As Theranostic Tools For Neonatal Surgical Conditions, Augusto Zani
Silent Messengers In The Nano-World: Harnessing Extracellular Vesicles As Theranostic Tools For Neonatal Surgical Conditions, Augusto Zani
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are lipid bilayer-enclosed nanoparticles secreted by all cells that mediate intercellular communication by transferring proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Among their cargo, microRNAs are key post-transcriptional regulators of organogenesis. In fetal lung development, EV-mediated signaling is essential for the coordination of epithelial, mesenchymal, endothelial, and immune cells. In congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), disruption of these interactions leads to pulmonary hypoplasia and pulmonary hypertension, the primary causes of morbidity and mortality. Amniotic fluid stem cell-derived EVs (AFSC-EVs) have emerged as a promising cell-free therapy to restore this impaired communication. In rodent, rabbit, and human models of pulmonary hypoplasia, …

Long-Term Tofersen In Sod1 Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Timothy M Miller, Robert C Bucelli, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
IMPORTANCE: Approximately 2% of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) cases are attributable to a pathogenic variant in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene. Tofersen, an intrathecal antisense oligonucleotide designed to reduce SOD1 protein synthesis, is the first and only approved therapy for the treatment of ALS in adults who have a variant in the SOD1 gene.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term effects of tofersen in adults with SOD1-ALS.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The phase 3, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled VALOR trial (A Study to Evaluate Efficacy, Safety, Tolerability, Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Tofersen in SOD1-ALS; conducted from March 2019 to July 2021) …
The Privacy Law Jigsaw: Piecing Together Legal Compliance When Pieces Don’T Fit, Roy Wyman, Wesley Mcculloch
The Privacy Law Jigsaw: Piecing Together Legal Compliance When Pieces Don’T Fit, Roy Wyman, Wesley Mcculloch
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Over the past six years the United States has shifted from a relatively stable and laissez-faire privacy regime, anchored by a few, sector-specific federal statutes such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, to an increasingly fragmented landscape dominated by numerous state-level consumer privacy laws. While these laws share commonalities, they also vary in important ways. This Article analyzes that patchwork legal regime and its impact on businesses through four points of friction: (i) statutory applicability and thresholds; (ii) notice-and-choice requirements; (iii) individual data-management rights; and (iv) controller–processor contracting obligations. This Article further explores how modern service-delivery models, especially …
The Role Of Spatial Abilities In Stem Learning And The Influence Of Individual Differences, Styliani Malkogeorgou
The Role Of Spatial Abilities In Stem Learning And The Influence Of Individual Differences, Styliani Malkogeorgou
Masters
Students’ decisions to pursue education and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are shaped by an interplay of cognitive, social, and motivational factors. Spatial ability is among the most reliable predictors of STEM success, yet less is known about how it relates to students’ STEM attitudes and aspirations, and whether visuospatial working memory (VSWM) explains this relationship. This study tested the hypotheses that (a) stronger spatial abilities and VSWM would be associated with more positive STEM attitudes and stronger STEM aspirations, and (b) VSWM would mediate the relationship between spatial abilities and STEM attitudes/aspirations, while examining the influence …
Transforming Indigent Appellate Advocacy, Rachel T. Goldberg, Estelle M. Mckee
Transforming Indigent Appellate Advocacy, Rachel T. Goldberg, Estelle M. Mckee
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Indigent appellate advocacy has long been confined to a narrow, technocratic model—one that prioritizes legal expertise over client autonomy and treats appellate cases solely as isolated legal battles rather than opportunities for systemic change. Unlike their trial-level counterparts, appellate attorneys representing indigent clients have received little scholarly attention, leaving critical questions about client participation, ethical representation, and social justice largely unexplored.
This Article challenges the status quo, arguing that appellate attorneys should rethink their role in ways that empower clients and confront the broader injustices shaping their cases. We introduce two alternative frameworks—client-centered appellate representation and participatory appellate representation—that draw …
Quantitative Echocardiography Markers To Denote Severity Of Tricuspid Regurgitation Compared To Cardiac Mri In Single Right Ventricle Variants, Tony Zunica, Daniel Forsha, Janelle Noel-Macdonnell, Anmol Goyal
Quantitative Echocardiography Markers To Denote Severity Of Tricuspid Regurgitation Compared To Cardiac Mri In Single Right Ventricle Variants, Tony Zunica, Daniel Forsha, Janelle Noel-Macdonnell, Anmol Goyal
Posters
Background: Single right ventricle and Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) are congenital heart diseases that require multiple palliative surgeries to create a single right ventricular system. 25-30% of these patients develop significant tricuspid regurgitation (TR), which is associated with worse outcomes among all stages of palliation. Echocardiography remains the cornerstone imaging modality for serial evaluation in these patients. However, estimating tricuspid regurgitation is highly subjective in the pediatric population, necessitating need for reliable and reproducible quantitative echocardiography markers. Currently, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is considered the gold standard for quantification of tricuspid regurgitation with good accuracy and reproducibility. Objectives/Goal: Our …
“Take A Seat”: Overcoming The Enforceability Challenges Of Crowdsourced Blockchain Arbitration, Anna-Sophie Hochgürtel
“Take A Seat”: Overcoming The Enforceability Challenges Of Crowdsourced Blockchain Arbitration, Anna-Sophie Hochgürtel
Journal of Dispute Resolution
This essay addresses the recent phenomenon of Crowdsourced Blockchain Arbitration (CBA). Within the landscape of new digital dispute resolution tools, I argue that CBA stands out as a cost-effective adjudicative dispute resolution forum for online consumer disputes. I then provide an overview of existing CBA platforms and address the question to what extent CBA constitutes a form of arbitration. Only if it does can CBA arbitration agreements and arbitration awards be enforced domestically and internationally under the New York Convention of 1958. I demonstrate that while CBA proceedings correspond to a conceptual understanding of arbitration, they fall outside the international …

Fatigue is one of the major distresses occurring in asphalt concrete pavement. Repeated traffic loading causes escalated structural damage which results in the formation of cracks. There is a strain level below which the Hot Mix Asphalt goes under fatigue failure, and it is called endurance limit. In this study, a predictive model is developed to predict endurance limit strain values by using artificial neural network. Uniaxial tension-compression fatigue test results conducted under NCHRP Project 9–44 A were utilized in the model development process. An equation is also extracted from the model along which gives the exact values as the …

Firm-Level Political Risk And Earnings Manipulation, Hui Liang James, Thanh Ngo, Jurica Susnjara
Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, and Business-Law Faculty Publications and Presentations
Using recently developed proxies for firm-level political risk and earnings manipulation, we test the limited attention theory. Contrary to Hirshleifer and Teoh’s core prediction that investor attention is associated with less managerial manipulation, we find that firm-level political risk, serving as a proxy for investor attention, is positively associated with manipulative earnings management, using both accruals and real activities. The results are robust to alternative proxies for political risk and earnings manipulation, various techniques addressing endogeneity concerns, and subsamples of firms with different earnings manipulation incentives. Moreover, we find that the negative relation between earnings manipulation and subsequent operating performance …

Aquatic food webs typically include highly coupled fast, ‘green’ energy pathways driven by algae or phytoplankton and slower, ‘brown’ energy channels driven by detritus and terrestrial plants. Quantifying how much energy biological communities obtain from each of these pathways is essential, particularly across multiple interconnected food webs over large areas, because energy dynamics are known to influence ecosystem structure and function. Despite their importance, few studies track variance in energy channel contributions to food webs across interconnected habitats during distinct hydrologic seasons. In this study, we used tri-isotope Bayesian mixing models to quantify seasonal contributions of energy pathways to consumers …

Sorex araneus, the Eurasian common shrew, has seasonal brain size plasticity (Dehnel's phenomenon) and many intraspecific chromosomal rearrangements. Genomic contributions to these traits, however, remain unknown. We couple a chromosome-scale genome assembly with seasonal brain transcriptomes to discover relationships between molecular evolution and both traits. While Positively Selected Genes (PSGs) enriched the Fanconi anemia DNA repair pathway (FANCI, FAAP100), which is likely involved in chromosomal rearrangements by preventing the accumulation of chromosomal aberrations, genes under positive selection or showing seasonal differential expression in the brain implicate neurogenesis (PCDHA6, SOX9, Notch signaling) and metabolic regulation (VEGFA, SPHK2) as key mechanisms underlying …

Thiopurine drugs are the cornerstone treatment for many diseases such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), organ rejection, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other autoimmune diseases. However, their clinical use faces limitations due to the drug-induced adverse effects, including myelosuppression. Several genetic associations have been evaluated for their association with these adverse drug reactions. TPMT and NUDT15 polymorphisms have emerged as important clinical markers for predicting and optimizing the safety and effectiveness of thiopurine drugs. The bench-to-bedside approach of exploring and assessing the genetic associations of TPMT and NUDT15 variants and the new LC-MS/MS …
Information Sharing Within Institutional Investor Networks, Wei Ting Loh
Information Sharing Within Institutional Investor Networks, Wei Ting Loh
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
This study examines whether information sharing occurs within institutional investor networks. I identify networks of institutional investors who share common investments and find that in-network investors earn significantly higher returns than other investors of the same firm, suggesting that valuable private information is shared within these networks. I also find that ownership by investor networks is associated with speedier price discovery and incorporation of more firm-specific news in prices, consistent with information sharing facilitating efficient price formation. In addition, ownership by network investors is associated with higher information risk as reflected in the probability of informed trading and market liquidity. …

Retinal detachment (RD) is a sight-threatening emergency requiring urgent intervention to prevent permanent vision loss. While both environmental and genetic risk factors contribute to RD, its complete genetic architecture remains unknown. Here, we performed the largest whole genome sequencing-based case-control study in RD to date, including data from 7,276 RD cases and 236,741 controls in the UK Biobank. Through variant- and gene-level association analyses, we identified VSX2 as a genetic determinant of RD risk while confirming established associations including FAT3, RDH5, and COL2A1. Gene-level collapsing analysis revealed that rare heterozygous missense variants in VSX2 confer a 2.8-fold …

Game-based assessments (GBAs) have become increasingly popular in personnel selection. However, research on perceptions of GBAs has yielded mixed results, highlighting the need to explore variables that may shape perceptions of GBAs. Therefore, we examined whether test takers' occupational background and other person-related characteristics (i.e., gender, age, video game usage, openness to experience) are associated with their perceptions of GBAs. N = 179 individuals from technical and social occupational backgrounds rated their perceptions of GBAs and non-gamified tests. We found that GBAs were generally rated more positively than non-gamified tests in terms of organizational attractiveness, behavioral intentions toward the organization, …

Objective: Pair-feeding is a study design element where one group's food intake is provided to another group to assess whether a treatment effect is independent of food intake. Investigators often assume equivalent food intake across experimental conditions and exclude it from the statistical analysis. However, the impact of this practice on type I error (T1Er) rates has not been quantified.
Methods: We conducted a Monte Carlo simulation in which animals were assigned baseline weights and food intakes, then randomized to non-pair-fed or pair-fed groups. Daily food intake for both groups was initially drawn from the baseline food intake distribution. For …

Despite extensive research on life-extending interventions, rigorous statistical techniques to determine their impact on compression of morbidity (CoM) are rarely used. We present a case example of an analytical method for examining the effect of life-extending dietary interventions on CoM by comparing the rates of decline in vitality and survival toward the end of life. Using data from previous experimental studies in mice, we calculated the average rate of vitality decline by fitting exponential decay models to individual vitality trajectories and compared this rate with the rate of survival decline estimated from Cox proportional hazards model. The results showed that, …

Background: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common gastrointestinal emergency in preterm infants with a morality rate that approaches 50%. Arginine has been widely studied in the field of clinical nutrition as a supplement for patients experiencing critical illness because it can be metabolized into nitric oxide, an important agent for supporting immunity and microcirculation. Citrulline has received less attention but can be metabolized into arginine and has a much longer plasma half-life than arginine. We used the highly translational preterm pig model to determine the effect of intravenous and enteral supplementation of arginine and citrulline on NEC incidence in …

To address and find solutions for these emerging issues, decision-makers must embrace the smart city and Society 5.0 paradigms, which comprehensively tackle various dimensions of the problem and ensure adaptability to evolving citizen needs. Central to the success of these paradigms is technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). AI’s transformative capabilities enable the expansion of services, automation of tasks, efficient operationalization and processing vast amounts of data to address urban challenges, aligning with several sustainable development goals (SDGs) such as sustainable cities and communities …

As a bacterial pathogen enters a human host, it immediately encounters a temperature upshift to 37°C. Mimicking the early hours of infection, we analyzed the transcriptome and proteome of uropathogenic Escherichia coli CFT073 initially grown at 23°C, then shifted to 37°C for 4 h. Temperature caused a change in mRNA expression for 9% of the genome (1% false discovery rate, ≥2-fold); similar impacts were observed for the proteome with a good concordance amongst the most highly temperature-regulated genes. Comparison to E. coli K-12 MC4100 shows temperature to be a more broadly used regulatory cue in the uropathogen. Multiple operons associated …
