Recent scholarly work on regulatory capture in the platform economy accounts for the political role and power wielded by app-based firms aiming to reform the existing legal environment to favor their low-cost labor business models. This article adds to scholarly perspectives on the platform economy by shifting the focus to government actors, the role of narrative in communicating with the public, and institutional constraints which may hamper the government’s ability to provide a cogent rationale for opposing or implementing legal change. This essay offers a comprehensive account of the past forty years of scholarship on footnotes within law. Not just any old footnotes, but footnotes that are discursive in form, that is, those with an expressive rather than bibliographic function. After contrasting the function of discursive footnotes in judicial opinions with those in academic legal literature, this essay identifies and decodes a comparatively hidden avant garde footnotes literature. Borrowing from techniques of literary criticism, that literature, properly understood, provides a foundation for our making more subtle judgments about both the relation of primary to secondary texts and the allocation of responsibilities …

This article evaluates the constitutionality of Oregon’s codified Rooney Rule considering the Supreme Court’s decision to end affirmative action in Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) v. Harvard. Passed in 2009, the Oregon mandate requires public universities to include at least one minority applicant in the interview process for all head coaching vacancies. By analyzing the architectural origins of the Rooney Rule within the National Football League (NFL) and the systemic racial exclusion it sought to dismantle, this research explores whether interview-stage mandates, that are applied at the state level, can survive the rigorous application of the strict scrutiny standard. …

Salary Caps And The Valuation Of U.S. Professional Sports Teams, Chase J. Cioe

This thesis examines whether salary caps affect the valuation of professional sports franchises in the NBA, NFL, and MLB over the 2003–2024 period. Amid ongoing debate over whether salary caps create financial value or simply redistribute it, this study asks whether capped leagues command a valuation premium relative to uncapped leagues. Using a balanced panel of 92 teams and 2,024 observations, the analysis employs random effects, league fixed effects, system GMM, and three natural experiments to identify the cap premium. The headwaters of the Colorado River Basin supply nearly 90% of the river’s flow and are among the most hydrologically sensitive areas in the U.S. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, westward expansion and the allure of gold and other valuable minerals drove thousands of miners into the basin. When the mining boom ended, the mines were left behind. Today, thousands of abandoned hardrock mine sites continue to leach acidity and heavy metals into streams, leaving a lasting impact on water quality. For decades, strict environmental liability laws made cleanup nearly impossible, creating a chilling effect that discouraged even …

In an attempt to provide regulatory authority within the digital asset market, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the CLARITY Act. Under the Act, a blockchain first falls under the jurisdiction of the Securities and Exchange Commission and then transitions to the jurisdiction of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as the blockchain “matures.” While the Act attempts to bring clarity to regulation within the digital asset industry, it falls short. Because of the Act’s transitional form, gaps are left for issuers to distort definitions and manipulate timelines to secure the oversight they want.

This research develops and implements a novel reinforcement learning (RL) architecture to address the trajectory-tracking problem in bipedal robotic systems under articulated-joint constraints. The proposed RL framework extends previously designed adaptive controllers characterized by state-dependent gain structures. The learning mechanism comprises two hierarchical adaptation layers: the first employs an adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) formulation to approximate the Bellman value function using a class of continuous-time dynamic neural networks. In contrast, the second uses an iterative optimization scheme based on the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm. The resulting control strategy minimizes a robust performance index defined over the tracking trajectories …

Annexing Greenland, making Canada the 51st State – what’s it all about? Critical minerals are often treated as a geological and national security problem that can be fixed through strength and coercion. This thesis argues that, in the Arctic, governance structures are what determine whether critical mineral wealth becomes strategically useful. Through a comparative qualitative analysis of Greenland, Canada, Alaska, Russia, and the Nordic countries, it examines what drives variation in critical mineral extraction and supply-chain integration across Arctic states, an especially relevant topic as Western states seek to reduce dependence on Chinese-controlled supply chains. Practices are the coherent and complex social activities we spend much of our lives engaging in. This category encompasses everything from figure skating to wine-tasting to friend relationships. We gain immense value from participating in practices, and philosophers have articulated a number of accounts for where the value emerges from and how we can best experience it. Many of these theories are ‘externalist’, because they posit that value is incidental to practices and emerges from outside of them.

Decomposing Carbon Intensity In U.S. Imports: Trade Composition Vs. Technological Change From 2000-2019, Alyssa K. Wong

This paper examines whether the increasing share of U.S. manufactured imports from China between 2000 and 2019 affected the carbon intensity of U.S. consumption. Bilateral trade data from BACI are combined with emissions data from the OECD Inter-Country Input-Output framework to construct a measure of carbon intensity defined as emissions embodied per dollar of imports at a country level. Changes over time are decomposed into composition effects, driven by shifts in import shares, and technique effects, driven by changes in emissions intensity within exporting countries. Scholars have raised concerns that the popularization of feminized, agreeable AI assistants normalizes associations between women and subservient behavior, potentially reinforcing broader gender stereotypes through repeated exposure. This study tested whether AI sycophancy and AI gender shape user perceptions of AI warmth, competence, affective trust, and cognitive trust, and whether interacting with a sycophantic female AI shifts explicit or implicit gender stereotype endorsement. Using a 2 (AI gender: male vs. female) × 2 (sycophancy: high vs. low) between-subjects design, 202 participants completed a simulated travel planning task with a voice-based AI agent. Atherosclerosis remains the primary driver of global cardiovascular disease, yet clinical interventions are largely restricted to high-cost, invasive procedures only after it has reached a critical stage. Recent research has identified a connection between the oral microbiome and vascular health via the enterosalivary nitrate-nitrite-nitic oxide (NO) pathway. Oral nitrate-reducing bacteria (ONRB) drive the synthesization of NO by reducing dietary nitrate into nitrite, which is then converted into bioavailable NO. NO is a potent vasodilator that maintains endothelial health by suppressing inflammation through inhibiting the expression of adhesion molecules VCAM-1 and ICAM-1. I argue that Bitcoin is the latest expression of the recurring American conflict over who controls the terms of money and property, and that the political coalition formed around Bitcoin shares the same characteristics as earlier coalitions formed around this struggle. I review three historical cases that each produced a coalition opposing the existing monetary order: the Bank War of the 1830s, the Free Silver movement of the 1890s, and the populist backlash against the Federal Reserve during the 1979 Farm Crisis and the 2008 Great Recession. This paper estimates the effect of legal representation on case outcomes using 531,959 limited-jurisdiction debt-collection cases filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court between 2012 and 2022. Defendants are classified into three groups: those who defaulted without responding, those who responded pro se, and those who retained counsel. Because defendants are not randomly assigned to representation, three estimation strategies address selection bias: a binary logit, a multinomial logit with text-mined docket covariates, and propensity score matching on pre-treatment characteristics.Three findings emerge. First, the binary logit associates representation with a 10 to 13 percentage point reduction in default probability, but matching …

Most commentary on Gulf state sports investment concludes that sportswashing fails: Saudi Arabia's favorability ratings remain low, its human rights situation has deteriorated, and Western public opinion shows no measurable improvement. This thesis argues that this conclusion applies the wrong standard. Asking whether Saudi Arabia has become more admired misses the more consequential question of whether it has become more accepted, and treating those two outcomes as equivalent produces misleading results. This thesis develops an original Normalization-Attraction Framework to evaluate whether the Saudi Public Investment Fund's October 2021 acquisition of Newcastle United Football Club has generated measurable political returns. Regime change may be sought in two primary ways, absent a turn to internal or external violence: through nonviolent resistance, from within, and sanctions, from abroad. This paper is about how those two pathways are intertwined. I challenge two different strands of the existing literature. First, I show that Liou et al. (2022)'s finding that sanctions increase the predicted probability of nonviolent resistance movement progress is subject to substantial upward bias from country heterogeneity. Incorporating country fixed effects, I show that sanctions, on average, have no statistically significant effect on resistance outcomes. Second, I challenge Chenoweth and Stephan (2008)'s argument …
