Images of asylum seekers and migrants desperate to enter the United States at the southern border abound in U.S. media. Less familiar to the American public, but intertwined with the highly politicized modern migration crisis, is the ever-growing backlog of pending asylum applications before both the Asylum Office and Immigration Courts. This backlog has many causes, including underresourced agencies, a growing number of asylum applicants, the high evidentiary burden and complexities inherent to asylum law, and the lack of counsel for many asylum seekers. In response to this crippling backlog, some scholars propose the adoption of a “group-based” asylum mechanism. …

Beef Cattle Producers’ Knowledge About And Preferences For Carbon Contracts, Zuyi Wang, Anastasia W. Thayer, Felipe De Figueiredo Silva, Michael Vassalos, Jordan M. Shockley, Nathan Smith

Carbon contracts have gained attention as a way to incentivize carbon-emissions reduction for the agricultural sector, particularly among beef-cattle producers.

Our study utilized data from a survey of 222 beef cattle producers in the southeastern United States to examine their knowledge, perceptions, and preferences regarding carbon contracts.

Survey respondents demonstrated a lack of accurate knowledge about carbon markets and contract specifications, with many overestimating the price of carbon.

Among the most common barriers to signing contracts were the cost of altering practices, the duration, and insufficient payments.

Further, our results indicated that producers require an additional $103.74/hectare ($42/acre) to accept …

The bilingual advantage hypothesis, which proposes an enhancement of executive functions in bilinguals, remains heavily debated with inconsistent findings across studies. This study investigated working memory performance in bilingual and monolingual young adults using a modified n-back task with an interruption while recording EEG activity. Participants completed 1-back, 2-back, and 3-back conditions across the pre-interruption phase and a post-break 2-back condition. Behavioral measures (accuracy and response times) were analyzed alongside ERP, focusing on P300 and sustained activity components, were analyzed. Results showed a decrease in accuracy as task difficulty increased from 1-back to 3-back, indicating the expected effects of higher …

A high-resolution absorbance spectrum of 1-butene was obtained in the 994–1000 cm⁻¹ region using a quantum cascade laser-based spectrometer coupled with a supersonic jet expansion source. To mitigate the low number density of the molecular jet, a multi-pass optical configuration was employed to achieve an effective path length of approximately six passes. Experimental spectra were calibrated using a methanol reference and etalon. Supporting calculations for vibrational frequencies and rotational constants were performed at the MP2/cc-pVTZ level of theory. Most people commonly imagine gleaming, unpainted, white marble under the lights of a museum gallery. However, Roman sculpture was far from how we commonly view it today; the Roman world was full of painted statues. How and why was Roman portraiture stripped of its color? This thesis discusses the development and use of Roman honorific portraiture over the course of the Republic, and the existence of polychromy within the Greco-Roman world. History, especially Classical history, is not as objective as it is often made out to be. Classical scholarship is not immune to the influence of politics, even if and when a scholar does not explicitly reference it or intend for the scholarship to be political. To explore this influence, this thesis examines two case studies: Edmund Buchner’s work from the 20th century on the so-called “ Horologium Augusti, ” and the rise of regime transition scholarship in the 21st century. Virgil composed the Aeneid at a moment when Roman cultural identity experienced a thorough reevaluation. This thesis argues that the Aeneid does not merely reflect the cultural moment in which it was written but rather presents a model for the formation of this new Roman identity. The second half of the Aeneid centers almost entirely upon the interactions and developing relationships between the different peoples who reside within Latium. This thesis investigates otherization and its use as a tool for power through theoretical, historical, and movement based investigations. Over the course of this academic year, I worked with a group of Connecticut College dancers in weekly rehearsals to build choreography and to hold discussions. This took place alongside external, independent research into thinkers and artists from Jean-Jacques Rousseau to Martha Graham, theories by historians such as Edward Said, and both historical and current events. Public health data dashboards have substantial potential to improve transparency, understanding, and decision-making at multiple levels, from individuals to public health practitioners and policymakers. However, creating effective dashboards presents many challenges. In this case-based tutorial on public health dashboard development, we share lessons learned from our experience developing data dashboards for the HEALing Communities Study (HCS), a National Institutes of Health (NIH)–funded, community-engaged intervention to deploy evidence-based practices to reduce opioid overdose deaths in 67 communities across 4 states. Tax law is not neutral--it encodes social values and reinforces certain longstanding hierarchies. For over fifty years, legal scholarship at the intersection of gender and tax has exposed how seemingly neutral tax laws perpetuate gender inequality. This Article uses the metaphor of quilting to trace the evolution of this scholarly field across three distinct eras.   Part I names and defines the designing era (1971-1986), which began with Grace Blumberg's writing on the gendered impact of tax laws on marriage, labor, and caregiving; she framed taxation as a tool of social control over women. Background: Inhibitory control (IC) is fundamental to academic achievement and mental health, yet limited research examines how modifiable environmental factors influence neural substrates of IC in early childhood. Sleep regulation and adversity may shape IC development through experiential canalization processes. Objective: The Sleep, Inhibition, and Performance (SIP) study investigates how sleep characteristics, socioeconomic status (SES), and stress predict neural markers of inhibitory control in children aged 5-8 using event-related potentials (ERPs). Experiences of LGBTQ+ people vary not only by person but also by geographic area (rural, urban, and suburban). The focus of this study is the social acceptance of LGBTQ+ identities in high schools in these geographic areas. In recent years, varietal honey has been a massive target of adulteration through mislabeling and the addition of other sugars. Unethical companies do this to cut production costs while still charging the consumer full price. Previous studies have used nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to unravel possible adulteration in honey, but currently, there are no standard rapid methods to authenticate varietal honey. In our research, we collected NMR signatures (“fingerprints”) and combined them with linear discriminant analysis (LDA) to predict the varietal, country, and region of varietal honey. This thesis examines how Western music theory pedagogy—long organized around tonal and twelve-tone equal-temperament frameworks—structures both what is taught and how students are trained to listen. Through a literature review tracing the historical construction of tonal universality in undergraduate curricula, the project argues that dominant models of music theory reproduce broader epistemic hierarchies inherited from Western conservatory traditions. Situating these histories within my own experience as a student navigating institutional listening norms, the thesis combines critical self-reflection with ethnographic research conducted across five liberal arts institutions, including the CBB consortium and JanPlan research at Wesleyan University and Amherst College. Precise integration of DNA origami nanostructures onto functional substrates is essential for advancing electronics, photonics, and biosensing. However, most surface-assembly methods are highly sensitive to substrate type, limiting their broader applications. Here, we introduce a thermal release tape (TRT)-assisted transfer method that enables efficient, large-area printing of DNA origami-guided gold nanoparticle (AuNP-DNA origami) arrays from mica onto diverse surfaces. The method relies on differential adhesion: AuNP-DNA origami arrays form strong electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding interactions with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)-functionalized receiver substrates, while the TRT adhesive weakens upon heating to 120°C, allowing release from the tape. Preferential fluid flow remains a major challenge in subsurface energy production and gas storage operations, resulting in excessive water production in mature oil fields, reduced heat extraction in geothermal reservoirs, and low sweep and storage efficiency in CO2-EOR projects. Polymer gels are widely used to mitigate high-permeability channels; however, conventional systems exhibit limited plugging efficiency and short lifetimes in ultra-high-temperature reservoirs due to poor thermal stability. The performance of starch-based biofuel cells is fundamentally limited by inefficient utilization of the fuel's inherent energy density. Sequential oxidation of carbohydrate fuels, such as glucose, the monomeric unit of starch, using minimal catalyst systems has therefore emerged as a promising strategy to improve biofuel cell efficiency. Here, we extend a previously reported three-catalyst, organic–enzymatic glucose oxidation cascade to polymeric carbohydrate fuels by integrating enzymatic starch depolymerization with downstream electrochemical oxidation. This study aims to provide a digital twin tool for mining and construction companies to evaluate the effect of operator behaviors on the truck-loading process, focusing on swing and bucket rotation. This work aims to develop a reliable algorithm for stall detection during excavator digging by analyzing key operational variables such as velocity and angular displacements from machine monitoring data. The work develops and validates a heuristic algorithm to detect stalling events and trains a support vector machine classification algorithm to distinguish between "normal" digging cycles and cycles with stalling. This work is a novel attempt at using a classification algorithm to categorize digging cycles into normal and those with stalling events based on machine monitoring data alone. Scalable, interpretable, and intelligent network monitoring and management are critical for 5 G and future networks. This paper introduces Aim5B, an AI-integrated semantic framework for 5 G and beyond network management to address these challenges. Aim5B processes unstructured logs from key 5G core network functions, and transforms them into a knowledge graph aligned with the semantic structure of control-plane events. This study examined why players substitute physical contact with people for virtual contact with people, why players engage in self-disclosure, and how they interact with other players. A content analysis analyzed data collected from an online questionnaire. Using data from 125 questionnaires, the research gathered information on why players self-disclose within the game World of Warcraft and if they have experienced any advantages or disadvantages from those interactions.

Translating the ultrahigh intrinsic conductivity of conjugated polymers into bulk 3D architectures remains a formidable challenge due to the fundamental dichotomy between rheological printability and electronic purity. Existing strategies necessitate a compromise: solution-processing requires insulating binders that degrade charge transport, while binder-free vapor-phase polymerization (VPP) is kinetically confined to surface-limited thin films by diffusion constraints. Here, we introduce atomized oxidative polymerization (AOP), a manufacturing paradigm that overcomes these kinetic barriers via active, layer-by-layer monomer atomization. This approach ensures stoichiometric reaction conditions throughout the printed volume, driving a structural transition toward highly conductive quinoid-dominant chains with enhanced π-π stacking. Multi-User Collaboration In Augmented Reality For Beyond-Visual-Line-Of-Sight Bridge Inspection, Joel Murithi Runji, Genda Chen

Bridge inspection traditionally relies on scaffolds, snooper trucks, and aerial robots for hard-to-reach areas beyond the visual line of sight of inspectors. This study automates the collaborative inspection workflow for multiple users when inspecting hard-to-reach bridge sections by interfacing low-cost multimodal sensors mounted on a magnetically wheeled climbing robot with augmented reality devices in a cyber-physical system. Non-destructive and visual sensors provide near real-time information of automated steel thickness measurements and visual observations of corrosive regions, respectively.
