Prototype Ai Assistant For Private And Student Pilots, Shawn De La Osa Aug 2026

Prototype Ai Assistant For Private And Student Pilots, Shawn De La Osa

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

This research explores AI-based decision support in light general aviation (e.g., Cessna 172, Diamond), where onboard hardware is typically too limited for modern AI. In aviation, AI has the potential to act as a “copilot” supporting planning, execution, and assessment, particularly since single pilots must simultaneously aviate, navigate, and communicate under high workload. However, although AI adoption is rapidly expanding, many implementations are introduced without fully incorporating human-centered design processes that account for pilot workflow and workload. We leverage a human factors process in this research. First, we design and evaluate a cloud-based AI copilot . The system leverages Starlink …

Advancing Vtol Tail-Sitter Stability Through Modern Flight Control And System Identification, Tobey Cram, Jacob House, Alexander Theophanis

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Title: Advancing VTOL Tail-Sitter Stability Through Modern Flight Control and System Identification   The concept of tail-sitter aircraft can be traced back to Nikola Tesla nearly 100 years ago; however, no aircraft with this novel design materialized until nearly 20 years later during World War II, when efforts were made to reduce reliance on runways. One notable design that emerged during the Cold War was the Convair XFY-1 Pogo. This design failed for reasons common to many others of the time: pilots had extreme difficulty landing while looking over their shoulders, and the technology of the era could not reliably maintain …

Data-Driven Learning Algorithms To Predict Spacecraft Trajectories In The Dro Family, Sarath Murarisetty, Hansaka Aluvihare Aluvihare, Oshani Jayawardane, Annika Anderson

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Generating precise, accurate, and efficient trajectories in the Earth-Moon circular restricted three-body problem (CR3BP) is crucial for long-term lunar missions, yet it remains challenging. A primary reason for this is that the CR3BP is an extremely nonlinear and chaotic system. Fortunately, neural networks present a promising approach for addressing such complex nonlinear challenges. In “Data-driven Learning Algorithms to Predict Spacecraft Trajectories in the DRO Family,” this work addresses the challenge of solving a nonlinear system within the CR3BP framework to determine the trajectories of spacecraft within the Distant Retrograde Orbit (DRO) family using neural networks (NNs). For a comprehensive comparison …

A Narrative-Restorative Framework For Addressing School Bullying, Tristan Patel, Michelle Myers, Daniel Stewart Aug 2026

A Narrative-Restorative Framework For Addressing School Bullying, Tristan Patel, Michelle Myers, Daniel Stewart

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Bullying in schools is often addressed through punitive deterrence practices, solution-focused counseling, or restorative conferencing. These approaches often fail to recognize or account for the power imbalance that ultimately sustains bullying. This article discusses a narrative-restorative intervention to address bullying as a relational and communal issue, rather than relying on isolation or deterrence practices. The limitations of the dominant models discussed highlight the role of power in shaping bullying dynamics and connect legal and ethical responsibilities of narrative-restorative practices. Situated within the framework of California education law and professional ethical standards, at its core, undercover anti-bullying teams aim to redistribute …

Human-Centered Modeling Of Traffic As A Complex System, Poorendra P. Ramlall Aug 2026

Human-Centered Modeling Of Traffic As A Complex System, Poorendra P. Ramlall

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Traffic systems are driven not only by motion, but by interaction: vehicles influence one another, drivers continuously adapt to surrounding behaviour, and cognitive processes shape decisions that can propagate through the flow of traffic. Understanding these layered interactions is essential for improving traffic safety and for designing the next generation of intelligent, connected, and automated transportation systems. This PhD research develops a multiscale, data-driven framework for identifying, modelling, and ultimately interpreting interaction structure in traffic systems. The work first established an information-theoretic basis for this problem, demonstrating how information flow can uncover directional relationships in traffic dynamics and help infer …
