Impact statement: A legislatively mandated, statewide endometriosis biorepository integrated within a multidisciplinary endometriosis focused program demonstrates how policy-driven infrastructure can integrate education, clinical care, harmonized biobanking, and translational research to address persistent gaps in women's health in the long term. The Connecticut Endometriosis Working Group (EWG), a group of legislators, researchers, patients, health care providers, and advocates, was established in 2021. The EWG met monthly to discuss strategies to address endometriosis and propose endometriosis specific legislation which has been a turning point. Public Acts 22-33 and 23-67 directed the establishment, governance, and annual reporting of a coordinated endometriosis data and …

The cricket Gryllus bimaculatus presents a compelling model for investigating neuroplasticity due to its unusual capability of adult structural reorganization. The molecular pathways underlying these changes remain poorly understood. Here, we reanalyzed RNAseq data, originally collected from deafferented and control prothoracic ganglia one, three, and seven days post-injury, which had previously been used to assemble a de novo transcriptome. In this current analysis, we aligned our original RNAseq data to the publicly available G. bimaculatus draft genome, and used the resulting alignments to refine and update the existing annotations. The combined effects of thousands of genetic polymorphisms account for Alzheimer's disease (AD) genetic risk. Most AD polymorphisms affect gene expression. Thus, the transcriptome, the set of all gene expression levels for every gene in the genome, is a major mediator between the genotype to phenotype. This study uses genotypes, transcriptomes, and clinical phenotypes to identify the transcriptomic signature that mediates the causal effect of genotype on AD. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the capacity of fibroblasts from permanent and deciduous dental pulp to express inflammatory mediators when exposed to bacterial and inflammatory antigens. It also sought to assess the presence of components of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and the potential modulatory role of ANG-II in this response.

METHODOLOGY: Fibroblasts were cultured from the pulp of permanent and deciduous teeth obtained from three adult and four pediatric donors with informed consent. Cells were stimulated with Porphyromonas gingivalis and Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharides (LPS) either alone or in combination with ANG-II and, in some cases, with IL-1β. Gene expression …

There are ~ 60 clustered protocadherin (cPcdh) isoforms expressed from three gene clusters (Pcdha, Pcdhb, Pcdhg) arrayed in tandem across nearly 1 Mb in mammals. cPcdhs are homophilic cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) critical for a host of neural developmental functions consistent with a role in cell-cell recognition. Indeed, isoforms make recognition modules in combination to generate recognition diversity far exceeding the ~ 60 individual CAMs. However, there is also growing evidence for specialized functions for specific isoforms, particularly the C-type isoforms found at the 3' ends of the Pcdha cluster (αC1 and αC2) and at the 3' end of the …

Purpose

Workplace genetic testing (wGT) is a wellness benefit offered to employees, providing a new access point for genetic testing. Although genetic counseling is not typically required in wGT, genetic counselors (GCs) play a key role in integrating genetic testing into health care and may interact with wGT in industry, laboratory, or clinical settings.

Methods

To ascertain US GCs’ perspectives and experiences with wGT, we administered a web-based survey, targeting GCs most likely to have professional experience with wGT. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize responses.

Introduction:

A growing body of literature suggests a role for neuroinflammation in retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death in glaucoma. For instance, deficiency of three proinflammatory cytokines, complement component 1, subcomponent q (C1q), interleukin 1 alpha (Il1a), and tumor necrosis factor (Tnf), resulted in significant protection of RGCs after glaucoma-relevant insults. While TNF and C1Q have been extensively investigated in glaucoma-relevant model systems, the role of IL1A in RGCs is not well defined.

A careful reading of recent scholarship on the early history of international taxation, especially on the League of Nations ’ work on ‘ double taxation ’ , ought to have dislodged many myths about this history. But more often than not, such scholarship is taken to offer mere details without altering our fundamental understanding. Race and Racism in Canada's Immigration Detention System is the first comprehensive, independent study to examine race and racism in Canada's immigration detention system. Grounded in rigorous legal analysis and qualitative research, the study draws on interviews with 50 participants, including people with lived experience of immigration detention, as well as lawyers, paralegals, and service providers who work in immigration detention. The research was guided by an advisory board of people with lived-experience in immigration detention and co-led by a collaborative research team.

Call Off The Dogs: Rethinking Sniffer Dog Searches In Canadian Criminal Law, Sara Gordon

The Supreme Court of Canada has repeatedly held that police sniffer dog searches are Charter-compliant based on a low standard of reasonable suspicion because they are minimally intrusive, narrowly targeted, and can be highly accurate. Since the Court last considered their constitutionality, however, extensive empirical research has fundamentally challenged assumptions about the reliability and accuracy of police sniffer dogs, as well as the harm to individuals subjected to these searches. Moreover, the phenomenon of handler cueing can operate to transmit a police officer’s unconscious biases—even those they would consciously reject—to their dogs, further reducing accuracy and leading to false alerts …

Despite its long history of admission throughout North America, there appears to be no published Canadian case subjecting bloodstain pattern analysis to the special scrutiny Canadian law demands for novel or contested scientific evidence. Instead, courts have admitted the evidence based largely on the training and experience of forensic examiners, taking it for granted that the field is sufficiently reliable. However, the application of the White Burgess framework reveals that there are serious and severe concerns about the underlying scientific validity of the technique which should render it generally inadmissible. Lawyers build from templates. Accounts of how law is made rarely mention them. New legislation tends to present itself as original. It is almost never made from scratch. This article makes the hidden process visible. It does so through a study of the near-global spread of environmental impact assessment (EIA) legislation since 1969, using computer-assisted textual similarity analysis to trace what I expected to be identifiable model laws and clear lines of legal inheritance. The search yielded instead a transnational repertoire of legal fragments, repeatedly recombined into new legislative forms across different legal traditions, languages and decades. This article provides in-depth consideration of the controversy around this question.Reviewing a number of common arguments and reasonswhy good faith is said to be too uncertain, and responses to these, the article finds a complex picture rather than a simple answer. Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients do not follow a single uniform physiological pattern. Patients admitted with the same diagnosis show different clinical trajectories over time making standardized classification and treatment approaches insufficient. The increasing availability of large-scale electronic health records in MIMIC-IV makes it possible to investigate such heterogeneity through data-driven approach that captures how physiology evolves during the early phase of ICU admission. This thesis compares two analytical pipelines designed to identify physiological subtypes from the first 48 hours of ICU time series data. Hormonal fluctuations across the distinct phases of the menstrual cycle have been shown to influence physiological and psychological responses to exercise, with some evidence suggesting phase-dependent changes in symptom presentation and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE); however, findings remain inconsistent, and few studies have examined these relationships across an entire competitive season in female soccer players. This qualitative study explored the factors that influence body image perception among African American women in the metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia area and examined how these perceptions shape physical activity and dietary behaviors. Body image perception is a critical psychocultural factor influencing obesity-related behaviors, particularly among African American women who navigate culturally specific beauty standards and health beliefs. Gray iron is composed primarily of an iron matrix and flake graphite, with the higher percentage of volume taken up by the iron matrix. The iron matrix is the transformation product of austenite, and this prior austenite structure is understood to affect the final grain structure. Grain structure affects the properties of a metal, with a finer structure recognized as beneficial for most properties. Ableist discourse has historically positioned disabled people as ‘unfit,’ resulting in their marginalization within society. Salt marshes provide critical ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, flood attenuation, and habitat for diverse aquatic and terrestrial species. Despite their ecological importance, these habitats are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activities and rising sea levels. To protect and restore salt marshes and their ecosystem services, restoration efforts using living shorelines (LS) have become more common. This thesis presents a nonparametric approach for assessing main and interaction effects in a 2 × 2 factorial design using the overlap coefficient, estimated through kernel density methods. A bootstrap procedure is used to approximate its sampling distribution for hypothesis testing. Simulation studies compare the overlap-based test with the ANOVA F-test, permutation F-test, and the Kruskal–Wallis test under heteroskedasticity and non-normal conditions. Results show that the overlap measure is highly sensitive to differences in spread and shape, detecting effects that traditional methods frequently miss.

We develop a fully gauge-invariant analysis of gravitational-wave polarizations in metric 𝑓⁡(𝑅) gravity with a particular focus on the modified Starobinsky model 𝑓⁡(𝑅) =𝑅 +𝛼⁢𝑅2 −2⁢Λ, whose constant-curvature solution 𝑅𝑑 =4⁢Λ provides a natural de Sitter background for both early- and late-time cosmology. Linearizing the field equations around this background, we derive the Klein–Gordon equation for the curvature perturbation 𝛿⁢𝑅 and show that the scalar propagating mode acquires a mass 𝑚2𝜓 =1/(6⁢𝛼), highlighting how the same scalar degree of freedom governs inflationary dynamics at high curvature and the propagation of gravitational waves in the current accelerating Universe.
