Collaborations that Work

This report provides findings from a study focused on research collaborations between 1862 and 1890 Land-Grant Universities. Methods included a survey of research administrators and interviews conducted with researchers. Insights from the study are interpreted through extant literature and organized by the categories of interpersonal interactions, organizational cultures, and institutional structures and processes. The report concludes with recommendations made by regional leaders based on these findings.

In Vitro Dihalobenzene Nephrotoxicity In Isolated Kidney Cells, Jana Ahmed Sherif

Brominated and chlorinated benzenes are common industrial chemicals linked to kidney injury. This study evaluated the nephrotoxicity of several mono- and dihalogenated derivatives using isolated kidney cells from male Fischer 344 rats. LDH release and trypan blue exclusion were measured after 30- and 60-minute exposures to 0.25–1.0 mM to test compounds. Toxicity increased with increased concentration and longer times. Mixed-halogen bromobenzenes, particularly 1-bromo-4-chlorobenzene, showed one of the highest toxicity levels, while 1,4dichlorobenzene was the most toxic chlorobenzene. Antioxidants (glutathione, ascorbate, and αtocopherol) markedly reduced injury, indicating oxidative mechanisms play a role in toxicity. cytochromes P450 (CYP) inhibitors (piperonyl butoxide and …

Primary dural lymphoma (PDL) is a rare subtype of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL), accounting for fewer than 1% of cases. It originates from the dura mater with no evidence of parenchymal or systemic involvement and is usually a low-grade marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZL). High-grade variants, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), are extremely uncommon and clinically more aggressive. We describe the case of a 65-year-old immunocompetent man who presented with progressive headaches and right-sided weakness. Brain MRI revealed a right frontoparietal dural-based enhancing lesion with a dural tail, closely mimicking meningioma on imaging. Subtotal resection was performed, …

This article explores whether the Supreme Court of Canada majority’s reasons in the Reference re Impact Assessment Act missed the forest for the trees. By applying a literal interpretation to the definition of “effects within federal jurisdiction” and what the Court called the “interprovincial effects clause” in the legislation, the majority departed from decades of flexible, purposive interpretation of environmental legislation. This article highlights three interrelated critiques of this aspect of the decision. First, it unpacks the way in which the majority’s reasons run contrary to the Supreme Court’s consistent approach to interpreting environmental legislation in previous decisions, inviting readers …

Almost 20 years ago, in R. v. Hape, the Supreme Court held that Canadian police investigations can proceed unfettered by constitutional constraints, so long as they take place outside of Canada. The Court recently had the opportunity to revisit this position in R. v. McGregor, but declined to clarify Hape, let alone revisit it. This paper argues that this was a missed opportunity. Hape rests on the flawed premise that the extraterritorial application of the Charter would interfere with other nations’ sovereignty. The Government of Saskatchewan introduced its Use of Preferred First Name and Pronouns by Students educational policy in August 2023. In response, UR Pride Centre for Sexuality and Gender Diversity sought a declaration that the policy violated sections 7 and 15(1) of the Charter, and that neither could be saved by section 1. To the extent that the policy required school personnel to out, deadname, and misgender students under the age of 16 absent consent from parents or guardians, UR Pride argued that the policy be declared of no force or effect under section 52 of the Constitution Act, 1982. …

Many parents have concerns about what their adolescent children are doing online, including potential risks of their tweens and teens encountering people who may want to harm them. Some fear they do not know what their children are doing online and may be motivated to seek information to alleviate their uncertainty. This study applied the theory of motivated information management (TMIM) to examine parents’ information management process amid feelings of uncertainty surrounding their adolescent children’s use of social apps. Meaning Management Theory suggests that engaging with meaning-related resources helps individuals constructively regulate consciously experienced death anxiety. Consistent with that theory, we tested whether a single-session, online work-strengths affirmation intervention reduces college students’ (N = 201) death anxiety. Participants completed baseline measures of death anxiety, meaning in life, and self-esteem. One week later, they were randomly assigned to complete either a work-related strengths reflection exercise or a neutral writing task. We assessed outcomes immediately post-intervention and two weeks later. The intervention did not significantly reduce death anxiety in the full sample. Exploratory analyses showed small, immediate reductions among participants …

In fact, it has been the very core of my teaching career.  Now, I have the humbling experience of testing those truths against a new enterprise:  learning Dutch.  I spent last summer in the Netherlands, pursuing family roots and acquiring what Dutch I could.  I took no formal classes but did attend a free dropin class at the local library, where - believe me - I was the lowest learner in the lowest group! Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, commonly known as DDT, was an organochlorine pesticide widely used in the mid-20th century. It is highly stable and resistant to degradation, leading to its long-term presence in the environment. This chemical bioaccumulates in ecosystems and in human tissue, particularly adipose tissue, raising concerns about chronic exposure. Emerging research links DDT exposure to adverse neurological outcomes, including increased risk for neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease. Mechanistically, DDT and its metabolites may disrupt dopaminergic neurons, induce oxidative stress, and interfere with mitochondrial function, contributing to neurotoxicity. Understanding the environmental fate of DDT and its bioaccumulative properties is essential for …

Amyloids, insoluble protein aggregates of cross ß-sheet structure, are commonly associated with amyloidosis diseases. However, more recent studies support that some amyloids serve essential functions evolutionarily conserved across several taxa, particularly in reproduction. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans serves as an excellent model organism in reproductive research. Prior to this study, no research has investigated the presence of functional amyloid in the C. elegans reproductive system. We hypothesize that similar to the presence of functional amyloid in the eggshells and epididymides of other organisms, functional amyloid will also be present in the germline and embryos of C. elegans. Stroke, a major cause of long-term disability and cognitive problems in the U.S., significantly affects people’s quality of life. Exposure to particulate matter (PM_2.5) may result in systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, which can worsen the cognitive function of post-thrombectomy stroke patients. This project thus assessed the relationship between PM_2.5 exposure and its effect on the cognitive function of post-thrombectomy stroke patients. Fifteen stroke patients (9 non-Appalachian and 6 Appalachian) undergone thrombectomy were recruited. Personal PM_2.5 exposure was measured using wearable sensors for a week during the study period. The Spanish renewable energy “saga” offers a graphic account of the structural biases of international investment law. Like other countries, Spain introduced economic incentives in support of photovoltaic energy, attracting sizable national and foreign investment. When this regime proved too burdensome on public finances, the government changed it drastically. Around 60,000 Spanish investors were affected. When these investors sought justice, they faced a different fate from their foreign counterparts. While foreign investors had the option to submit their claims to international arbitral tribunals, domestic investors were limited to national courts.

Purpose/Background 

Propofol is widely regarded as the standard anesthetic agent for preventing and treating emergence delirium, particularly in pediatric patients. Emergence delirium presents as postoperative agitation that may escalate to self-injurious behavior that can lead to disruption of critical lines or equipment. Since its approval in 1999, dexmedetomidine has gained attention for its sedative and sympatholytic properties, offering potential advantages over propofol. This study compares the postoperative effects of propofol and dexmedetomidine in reducing emergence delirium in pediatric surgical patients.

Patients in the United States are subject to an ever-growing “avalanche” of unwanted medical treatment (UMT).  This is ethically, economically, and legally wrong. First, UMT constitutes a serious violation of patient autonomy and self-determination.  Second, it is waste (and often fraud or abuse) of scarce healthcare resources.  Third, but for rare exceptions, administering UMT contravenes settled legal rules and principles around consent and battery.

A small to midsized university supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education by partnering with a reputable online learning company to provide students and faculty access to artificial intelligence powered textbook problem sets and chatbots. An in-house formative assessment study was conducted in Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 to understand how traditional undergraduate students engaged with the platform. Quantitative results suggests that the general population did not utilize it as much as initially expected.
