42 U.S.C. § 1981 should have solved a pervasive problem in American capitalism—when white economic interests do not converge with the contract rights of Black people, they are excluded from the market in a way that causes systemic harm. This Article proposes that the failure to enforce 1981 in the past may render it more harmful than beneficial in the present climate of retrenchment. The realities of racism combine with the lack of economic interest convergence to make combatting contract inequality on a contract-by-contract basis legally precarious, nearly impossible to properly evaluate, and difficult to economically incentivize. Can Feedback Framing Improve Creative Problem-Solving? Examining The Effects Of Valence And Format, Ellie H. Tran

This study examined the role of feedback valence (positive vs. negative) and format (question vs. statement) in influencing creative performance. Grounded in self-determination theory, the study also tested whether feedback acceptance mediated the effects of feedback characteristics on creative outcomes. Psychology undergraduate students (N = 308) completed a creative task in which they generated and developed ideas for community-based projects addressing psychological issues. Participants were randomly assigned to receive positive or negative feedback presented either as a statement or a question, or to a no-feedback control condition. Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems convert thermal radiation into electricity, and their efficiency depends strongly on the temperature-dependent optical response of the emitter materials. To support the design of high-temperature selective emitters, we characterized the thermo-optical properties of aluminum nitride ceramic (AlN), silicon carbide (4H– SiC), and aluminum oxide on aluminum nitride (AlN/Al2O3) thin film/substrate pairs, as a promising example of a bilayer emitter. Spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements from 240 nm to 2500 nm were performed while heating samples from room temperature to 600 °C. Using general oscillators modeling, we established accurate temperature dependent optical models consistent with literature values. Increasing temperature revealed …

Leveraging Machine Learning Techniques To Identify Catastrophic Outliers In Photometric Redshift Estimates, Jason Yoo

Leveraging the unprecedented data volumes from modern astronomical surveys, this work addresses the critical challenge of identifying catastrophic outliers (COs) in photometric redshift (photo-z) estimates. Reliable redshift estimation is essential for precision cosmology, yet COs (galaxies with severely erroneous photo-z) can introduce significant systematic bias. We develop and evaluate two machine learning approaches for robust CO identification: a multilayer perceptron (MLP) utilizing photo-z point estimates and probability distributions, and a convolutional neural network (CNN) leveraging raw 5-band photometric images. Using datasets emulating LSST conditions, we demonstrate that the MLP model achieves high accuracy and stability across redshift bins, correctly identifying …

A process qualification-oriented data-driven framework for Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) integrating qualification data, process monitoring and feedback control, is presented. A proportional control strategy regulating heat input by varying the Contact Tip–to–Workpiece Distance (CTWD) is developed to enhance process stability, ensure consistent layer geometry and maintain the qualified heat-input conditions for process qualification. To assess the control strategy stability, deep learning-based CTWD soft sensing from high-frequency welding signals is combined with an uncertainty-aware process quality index. The framework is validated on Invar 36 alloy, but it supports extension to other alloys and arc welding-based additive processes.

Statutory anti-retaliation protections are often the only enforcement mechanism placed in federal minimum labor standard statutes, and the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is no exception. An integral part of proving retaliation claims is showing there was a causal connection between the adverse action and the use of protected leave. Unfortunately for plaintiffs, the federal circuit courts apply different causation burdens to these claims. Some adopt motivating factor causation and others adopt but-for causation.

This Essay examines this circuit split and argues for the adoption of motivating factor causation for FMLA retaliation claims stemming from the use of protected leave. …

Economists and antitrust scholars have recently warned that the AI industry may be a natural monopoly. In support of this claim, they have argued that the AI industry shares key features with natural monopolies of the past: First, like railroads, AI has high fixed and low marginal costs. That is, training a frontier AI is expensive, but asking it a question is cheap. Next, like social media, AI companies will benefit from network effects.
