Perception Of Prosodic Speech Patterns Of Autistic Individuals, Rebecca Lunt

The purpose of this study was to determine the perception that neurotypical individuals have of autistic individuals’ speech, including their speech prosody. Speech samples were collected from four neurotypical and four autistic young adults as they answered interview questions. Then, 50 neurotypical listeners (28 female, 22 male) were recruited to listen to the speech samples and rate the speech on visual analogy scales on their likeability and ability to communicate. Participants were told prior to listening to the speech samples whether or not the speaker had autism; however, there were both deceptive and truthful listening conditions, with some autistic speakers …

Polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases, caused by a CAG repeat expansion encoding a glutamine tract in nine distinct proteins, present a complex molecular puzzle in which each piece contributes to neurodegeneration. While each of the causative proteins has a distinct function, the downstream consequences of polyQ toxicity are often similar, including protein accumulation, transcriptional dysregulation, somatic CAG repeat instability, disrupted energy homeostasis, compromised synaptic function, and selective neuronal death. This review summarizes emerging insights into how proteins with an expanded polyQ tract disrupt distinct cellular functions, and we examine a multitude of discoveries that are inspiring and reshaping novel therapeutic strategies.

Automated understanding of driver behavior from vehicular kinematics is vital for safety-aware intelligent transportation systems. However, centralized cloud processing suffers from latency, scalability, and privacy issues. Federated Learning (FL) provides a decentralized alternative but faces two major challenges: (i) non-IID client data due to heterogeneous driving styles and sensors, and (ii) severe class imbalance, as risky behaviors are inherently rare. In this work, we propose a personalized FL framework that uses a shared CNN-LSTM backbone with client-adaptive classifiers and incorporates a cost-sensitive loss to address behavior skew. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, have gained popularity in various fields such as agriculture, emergency response, and search and rescue operations. UAV networks are susceptible to potential security threats, such as wormhole attacks, jamming, spoofing, and false data injection. Time-Delay Attack (TDA) is a unique attack in which malicious UAVs intentionally delay packet forwarding, posing significant threats, especially in time-sensitive applications. It is challenging to distinguish malicious delay from benign network delay due to the dynamic nature of UAV networks, intermittent wireless connectivity, or the Store-Carry-Forward (SCF) mechanism during multi-hop communication. Wildfires cause unpredictable spread and panic-driven congestion, posing severe challenges to evacuation planning. We present RESCUE (Routing under Evolving Stochastic Congestion and Uncertain Spread in Wildfire Emergencies), a dynamic, risk-aware framework that models the road network as a time-varying weighted graph. RESCUE operates in two stages: (i) a preprocessing phase integrating fire forecasts, traffic density, and distance to assign edge weights, and (ii) a real-time routing phase that adaptively updates paths using a multi-granular strategy distinguishing macro-level disruptions (e.g., rapid spread) from micro-level changes (e.g., local congestion). Background

Malaria is a major public health problem, with over half of the world’s population, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, at risk. Climate change is already affecting the prevalence of malaria, in part by altering the distribution and density of mosquito vectors. This study assessed the relationship between climate variables and mosquito species distribution on malaria prevalence in Kenya from January 2019 to June 2021.

Methods

Data from 23 Kenyan counties were analyzed using mixed-effect regression, spatial analysis, correlation analysis, and the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) to select variables.

Despite ongoing eradication efforts, female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C) remains a major public health and human rights concern in Ethiopia. This quantitative study was conducted to examine how circumciser type (traditional cutter, birth attendant, or health professional) influences FGM/C prevalence and severity among girls ages 0–14, considering the moderating effects of residence and mothers’ FGM status, while controlling for age and income. Guided by the social ecological model and using 2016 E Ethiopian Demographic Health Surveys data, analysis indicates a significant association between circumciser type and FGM/C type (χ² (2, N = 1,553) = 6.86, p = .032), which …

Wildfires represent a growing threat to property and human life due to climate change and development into higher exposure areas. These risks are particularly salient in the Arctic and subarctic where changes are occurring quickly. This paper uses a hedonic model of home sale prices in Alaska to estimate individuals’ willingness to pay to avoid wildfire exposure. A hedonic housing price analysis shows that the homes most exposed to wildfire actually sell at a premium compared to those homes that are least exposed. However, this premium disappears once proximity to public firefighting infrastructure is accounted for, suggesting that the premium …

We report the synthesis of high-quality 2H-TaS₂ nanowires via a controlled two-step conversion process from TaS₃ precursors, achieving robust superconductivity with a transition temperature T c ≈ 3.6K, which is significantly higher than bulk 2H-TaS₂ (T c ≈ 0.8K). Structural and compositional analyses confirm phase purity and preserved one-dimensional morphology, while magneto transport measurements reveal an enhanced upper critical field μ 0 H c2 (2K)≈5 T, far exceeding the bulk value (_μ0H_c2 (0)≈1.17T), attributed to dimensional confinement and suppression of charge-density wave order. Unlike its predecessors, this Article focuses on developing a structured approach to dissecting the Chinese regime, especially the Personal Information Protection Law and latest case law. In this article, we demonstrate the feasibility of performing automatic technology computer-aideddesign (TCAD) parameter calibration and extraction using machine learning (ML), with the machine trained solely by TCAD-simulation data. The methodology is validated using experimental data. Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) with different effective anode workfunctions (WF) are fabricated with emerging ultrawide bandgap material, Gallium Oxide (Ga2O3), and are measured at various temperatures (T). Their current-voltage (I–V) curves are used for automatic Ga2O3 Philips unified mobility (PhuMob) model parameters calibration. BACKGROUND: Kratom use is rising, increasing the need for safety and tolerability studies of high-quality and well-characterized kratom products in humans. Kratom's risk-benefit ratio, recommended dose, treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs), abuse potential, and withdrawal require evaluation. Thus, the safety and tolerability of 4 escalating single and 15 daily dried kratom leaf powder doses in human volunteers were evaluated over 47 days in the largest controlled kratom-administration study to date.

This article critically examines the literature on global aid governance through a feminist lens, focusing on three key areas: epistemic power, organisational depoliticisation, and the ethics of accountability. The review reveals that the coloniality of knowledge in global aid governance creates epistemic hierarchies grounded in claims of objectivity and efficiency, thereby marginalising local voices. Meanwhile, processes such as NGO-isation and professionalisation have transformed activism into administrative compliance. However, within these structures, reflective agency can still emerge through negotiated autonomy and the politics of translation, allowing feminist organisations to maintain their political significance.
