Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Spatially resolved transcriptomics (SRT) is a promising new technology that enables simultaneous analysis of gene expression and spatial information for biomedical research. However, the existing statistical and deep learning algorithms used for analyzing SRT data rely solely on two-dimensional (2D) spatial coordinates, which limits their ability to accurately identify spatial domains, spatially variable genes (SVGs), cell-to-cell communications, and developmental trajectories in a three-dimensional (3D) spatial manner. To address these limitations, we introduced Spa3D, which utilized the anti-leakage Fourier transform and graph convolutional neural network model to reconstruct 3D-based spatial structures from multiple 2D SRT slices. We demonstrate that Spa3D is …

Change Detection In An Electronic Device Using Resonant Frequency Analysis, Alan She Jan 2026

Change Detection In An Electronic Device Using Resonant Frequency Analysis, Alan She

Defensive Publications Series

Detecting internal physical changes in an electronic device (e.g., a smartphone, smart watch, wearable device) may be difficult with some conventional methods, and is often limited to chemical or electrical monitoring that fails to detect structural changes. A system can perform a mechanical resonant frequency analysis using existing hardware components, such as a haptic actuator and one or more sensors (e.g., an accelerometer, a microphone). The haptic actuator can be configured to generate a vibrational stimulus across a range of frequencies, while the sensors can measure the device's corresponding response. This measured response data can be processed to generate a …

Advertising Targeting System For Products Dynamically Synthesized From User Specifications, Lakshmi Kumar Dabbiru, Sneha Sripadaraja Kudli

Defensive Publications Series

Online advertising systems that rely on static product catalogs may have challenges serving advertisements for custom products specified by users in real-time. A technical framework can use an image synthesis engine to generate a product image based on user input, such as text or images. This dynamically generated image may then function as an ad creative. An advertiser targeting module can match the creative to eligible advertisers who may validate the design, for example, through a real-time application programming interface call, and return dynamic metadata like pricing and material options. This system can facilitate the presentation of transactable offers for …

Continuous Ambient Microphone Calibration Via Opportunistic Broadband Auditory Icons, Rajeev Nongpiur, Chris Breithaupt Jan 2026

Continuous Ambient Microphone Calibration Via Opportunistic Broadband Auditory Icons, Rajeev Nongpiur, Chris Breithaupt

Defensive Publications Series

Performance drift in microphone arrays is often caused by environmental factors such as dust, moisture, and grime accumulating over time. This spectral mismatch degrades the performance of spatial audio algorithms that rely on precise array calibration. To address this limitation, a continuous calibration method is disclosed wherein broadband earcons are opportunistically played through device speakers. Audio responses are recorded by on-device microphones during defined user scenarios. A background model is generated to filter out environmental noise and room reverberation from these recordings. Subsequently, the filtered in-field measurement is compared against a reference factory template to estimate spectral deviation. A calibration …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Aggregation of the intrinsically disordered protein alpha-synuclein into amyloid fibrils and their subsequent intracellular accumulation are hallmark features of several neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease, for which no curative treatments currently exist. In this study, we investigate the relationship between fibril morphology, thermodynamic stability, and susceptibility to disaggregation by the human chaperone system comprising HSP70, DNAJB1, and Apg2. By varying assembly conditions and incubation times, we generated alpha-synuclein fibrils with diverse morphological and biochemical properties, including a broad range of thermodynamic stabilities, which we quantified using a chemical depolymerization assay. The chaperone system effectively disaggregated three of the four fibril …

Partial Threaded Barrel Nut With Hollow Spacing Along Unthreaded Portion Concept, Anonymous Jan 2026

Partial Threaded Barrel Nut With Hollow Spacing Along Unthreaded Portion Concept, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

Current bolts and nuts used to attach vehicle parts experience failure during crash due to bolt over constrained by the nut. New design of barrel nuts to reduce bolt loads under crash events by reducing bolt constraints (more of the bolt shaft can deform) is presented. Update the thread location to be further away from the head and creating a hollow space between the bolt and the nut before the starting of the thread enables bolt to deform more, subsequently reduce shear load, failure risk and keep the integrity of vehicle’s major structures.
