A Phenomenological Exploration Of Lgbtq+ High School Graduates’ Perspectives On Lgbtq+-Related Legislation, Thomas James Foley Jan 2026

A Phenomenological Exploration Of Lgbtq+ High School Graduates’ Perspectives On Lgbtq+-Related Legislation, Thomas James Foley

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ+) students’ social, emotional, and academic experiences and outcomes are not on par with their non-LGBTQ+ peers. Understanding how LGBTQ+ young adults experienced high school in a state with LGBTQ+-affirmative education legislation provides insight for counselors and educators to identify policies and practices that support positive outcomes for LGBTQ+ students. This qualitative phenomenological study explored how LGBTQ+-identifying high school graduates made meaning of their experiences in school as they related to LGBTQ+-affirmative education legislation. Interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used for the research methodology and data analysis process. Results included four themes: (a) …

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

Thermal switches are a key enabling technology for spacecraft operating in extreme thermal environments. Whether surviving the lunar night, managing intermittent high-power loads from deep space communication systems, or dealing with other extreme thermal environments, high-performance thermal switches allow critical missions to operate beyond conventional thermal design limits. This paper presents the development, testing, and performance of a suite of passive thermal switches designed for both spacecraft- and subsystem-level thermal control. The suite includes: (1) traditional in-line switch placed between sensitive components and radiators; (2) compact designs suitable for integration into standard bolted joint interfaces to modulate the conductance between …

An Investigation Of A Mach 15 Flow Over A Blunt Wedge Using First-Principles Potential Energy Surfaces: Influence Of Wall Temperature, Paolo Valentini, Zach Davis, Maninder S. Grover, Nicholas J. Bisek Jan 2026

An Investigation Of A Mach 15 Flow Over A Blunt Wedge Using First-Principles Potential Energy Surfaces: Influence Of Wall Temperature, Paolo Valentini, Zach Davis, Maninder S. Grover, Nicholas J. Bisek

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

The simulation of a Mach 15 air flow over a blunt wedge is conducted using the direct molecular simulation (DMS) method. Due to partial dissociation of the air mixture at the imposed free stream conditions, the shock layer contains N2, O2, NO, N, and O. All potential energy surfaces (PESs) used to model the various molecular interactions only describe electronic ground states energetics. Thus, no electronic excitation is modeled. An isothermal wall boundary condition is imposed, with full momentum and energy accommodation. Two wall temperatures are considered in this work, namely 1,000 K and 2,000 K. …

Hypersonic Non-Equilibrium Cfd And Dsmc Model Comparisons With The Varda Reentry Capsule, Jack D. Crespo, Paolo Valentini, Ashwin P. Rao, Zach S. Davis Jan 2026

Hypersonic Non-Equilibrium Cfd And Dsmc Model Comparisons With The Varda Reentry Capsule, Jack D. Crespo, Paolo Valentini, Ashwin P. Rao, Zach S. Davis

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

Nonequilibrium aerothermodynamic modeling of the Varda hypersonic testbed capsule is conducted with direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solvers. Flowfield properties at the 78 km reentry trajectory point are extracted to compute line of sight spectral radiance using two radiative emission codes, namely HARA and NEQAIR. Computed spectra are compared to spectral radiance measured by an in situ optical emission spectroscopy payload flown on Varda’s W-2 capsule in 2025. Model comparisons to the experimental data reveal discrepancies between the HARA and NEQAIR radiative emission predictions in both overall magnitude and qualitative behavior. NEQAIR was found to …

What’S My Name? Experiences Of Individuals With Traditional Hawaiian Names, Natalya N. Spotkaeff Jan 2026

What’S My Name? Experiences Of Individuals With Traditional Hawaiian Names, Natalya N. Spotkaeff

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is no systematic process of orienting non-Hawaiian educators to Hawaiian culture, as evidenced by name mispronunciation. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the experiences of individuals with traditional Hawaiian first names in a classroom environment. Critical race theory (CRT), especially the concept of microaggressions, was used as the framework for the study. Two research questions guided the study: What are the adult lived experiences with traditional Hawaiian first names encountered in academic settings during childhood? How do adults with traditional Hawaiian first names describe their experiences of race in the classroom? Semistructured interviews were conducted with …

Atmospheric Waves Experiment (Awe) Thermal Control System: Review Of On-Orbit Performance, Matthew I. Ralphs, Mike Holt

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

This paper reviews the Atmospheric Waves Experiment (AWE) detector thermal control system’s (TCS) performance for over two years of operation on the Internation Space Station (ISS). The TCS employs active thermal control for the InGaAs detectors with thermoelectric coolers (TEC). Each of the four detectors are controlled by a dedicated TEC at a nominal setpoint of -30°C, with heat transported away via low-mass, high-conductance pyrolytic graphite sheet (PGS) thermal straps into a nickel-plated copper conductor bar. A bi-directional radiator with Silver Teflon ensures an unobstructed view that can radiate the heat away to space. Titanium isolators decouple the detectors from …

Biogeochemical Cycling Of Dissolved Zinc And Zinc Isotopes In The Arctic Ocean, Elise Langer, Dylan J. Halbeisen, Ruifeng Zhang, Seth G. John, Tim M. Conway Jan 2026

Biogeochemical Cycling Of Dissolved Zinc And Zinc Isotopes In The Arctic Ocean, Elise Langer, Dylan J. Halbeisen, Ruifeng Zhang, Seth G. John, Tim M. Conway

Making Waves REU

  • Dissolved Zinc (dZn) is an essential micronutrient that supports primary productivity in the ocean (Morel & Price, 2003).
  • Dissolved zinc isotope ratios (δ⁶⁶Zn) help us understand the sources, sinks, and internal cycling of dZn (Bermin et al. 2006; Conway and John, 2014, Horner et al. 2021).
  • The background deep ocean has a largely homogenous δ⁶⁶Zn composition of +0.45‰ (Conway and John, 2014), thus deviations away from +0.45±0.05‰ suggest dZn input, loss, or alteration (Fig. 1).
  • We hypothesize that margin sediments and freshwater input deliver isotopically light dZn to the coastal Arctic (Jensen et al. 2019).
  • Near the North Pole, We …

Disruption of lymphatic function underlies a broad spectrum of inflammatory and metabolic disorders, yet the hormonal pathways that regulate lymphatic biology remain poorly defined. GH, which is implicated in similar disease states, has an unclear role in lymphatic homeostasis. To address this gap, we investigated how chronic alterations in GH signaling alter lymphatic structure and function. Using transgenic mouse lines with increased, decreased, or absent GH action, we quantified the effect of GH on lymphatic pumping rate and lymphangiogenic remodeling during wound healing using near-infrared fluorescent imaging. We also measured markers of lymphatic endothelial cells using Western blot and immunohistochemistry …

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) with prion-like domains (PrLDs), such as FUS and TDP-43, condense into functional liquids, which can transform into pathological fibrils that underpin fatal neurodegenerative disorders, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)/frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Here, we define short RNAs that prevent FUS fibrillization by promoting liquid phases and distinct short RNAs that prevent and reverse FUS condensation and fibrillization. These activities require interactions with multiple RNA-binding domains of FUS and are encoded by RNA sequence, length, and structure. We define a short RNA that dissolves cytoplasmic FUS aggregates, restores nuclear FUS, and mitigates FUS toxicity in optogenetic models and ALS …

Introduction: Each year, millions of people experience recurrent diverticulitis episodes. Elective sigmoid colon resection reduces the risk of recurrence, but The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons recommends individualising surgical decisions based on the impact of the condition on a patient's quality of life (QoL). However, no threshold for QoL impairment has been established to guide decision-making, and evidence comparing elective colectomy with medical management in terms of QoL limitation is limited. To address these gaps and to guide treatment decision-making, we designed the Comparison of Surgery and Medicine on the Impact of Diverticulitis (COSMID) trial. The COSMID trial is …

Knowledge workers in enterprise environments can face challenges when resolving complex inquiries, as they may need to manually parse and synthesize information from multiple historical precedents. Existing retrieval systems may identify relevant cases but can leave the cognitive burden of synthesis to the user. Systems are described that can automate the synthesis of insights. For example, a system may use a semantic similarity model to retrieve a set of procedurally analogous historical cases from a data repository. A generative synthesis module could then compile data from these retrieved cases into a structured prompt for a large language model. The model …

During semiconductor design-for-test operations, the application of high-activity test patterns can generate localized heat as functional-mode thermal management systems may be inactive. A hardware-based architecture can integrate localized monitoring modules near potential thermal hotspots. A module can operate synchronously with test patterns to capture peak temperature values and their corresponding test pattern counts. The system may also include a mitigation circuit that compares real-time temperature against a configurable threshold and can throttle system clocks if the threshold is exceeded to reduce heat generation. This approach can provide thermal observability and control in a test environment, enabling the creation of thermal …

Ratcheting Hinge With User-Actuated Lock For Temple Arm Declination, Yaaseen Mahomed, Jon Hurwitz

Defensive Publications Series

Wearable electronic devices (e.g., smart glasses, augmented reality headsets, etc.) rigid frames may not accommodate diverse head geometries, as a fixed temple arm declination angle can lead to discomfort, instability, and optical misalignment. This disclosure describes a user-actuated hinge assembly for adjusting the declination angle of a temple arm. The assembly may comprise a pair of intermeshing geared components, one coupled to the device's main frame and the other to the temple arm. A user-operable, spring-biased clamping element can engage one of the geared components to lock the angular position. Actuating a control can disengage the clamp, permitting rotational adjustment …

Selecting a database service can be challenging when decisions rely on static information or generalized benchmarks, which may not align with an application's specific runtime performance needs, potentially leading to implementation risks. A system can provide automated, performance-validated database recommendations. The system can translate a user's non-functional requirements into a profile used to programmatically provision temporary test environments for candidate databases. A workload generator can then simulate a user's specific application load within these environments, which may allow the system to harvest real-time performance and cost metrics. The collected empirical data can be processed by a scoring algorithm to calculate …

BACKGROUND: The optimal timing of cranioplasty (CP) following decompressive craniectomy (DC) for the management of traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains debated. Prior studies comparing early CP (EC) and late CP (LC) report conflicting outcomes, compounded by inconsistent timing thresholds and limited attention to effect modifiers such as implant material.

OBJECTIVE: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing outcomes of EC (≤ 90 days) versus LC (> 90 days) after DC for TBI, with particular evaluation of ultra-EC (<  35 days) and implant material.

METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL were electronically searched from inception to April 2025, supplemented by manual screening of references and grey …

Uplink Latency Reduction In Non-Terrestrial Networks Via Predictive Scheduling Request, Edison Chen

Defensive Publications Series

Standard reactive scheduling request (SR) procedures in high-latency Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) cause uplink delays, as a user equipment (UE) must wait a full round-trip time (RTT) for an uplink grant after data becomes available. This is compounded for large data transfers, which may require two RTTs for SR and Buffer Status Report (BSR) cycles. This disclosure describes a proactive scheduling mechanism where the UE sends an SR in advance of data arriving in its buffer. Based on predicted traffic, informed by application-layer signaling or an on-device machine learning model, the SR is timed to ensure the uplink grant arrives just-in-time …
