A Recurrent Neural Network For Forecasting Dead Fuel Moisture Content With Inputs From Numerical Weather Models, Jonathon Hirschi, Jan Mandel, Kyle Hilburn, Angel Farguell

This paper proposes a recurrent neural network (RNN) model of dead 10 h fuel moisture content (FMC) for real-time forecasting. Weather inputs to the RNN are forecasts from the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR), a numerical weather model. Geographic predictors include longitude, latitude, and elevation. Forecast accuracy is estimated in a study that utilizes a spatiotemporal cross-validation scheme. The RNN is trained on HRRR forecasts and observed FMC from weather station sensors within the Rocky Mountain region in 2023, then used to forecast FMC at new locations for all of 2024. Rationale: A bicornuate uterus is an uncommon mullerian duct malformation strongly associated with recurrent early pregnancy loss and adverse obstetric outcomes. When combined with endocrine disturbances such as hyperprolactinemia and postpartum thyroid dysfunction, fertility becomes even more challenging. This case highlights how coordinated reproductive-endocrine management can overcome multiple intersecting barriers to conception and successful pregnancy.

Patient concerns: A 24-year-old woman presented with a history of 3 first-trimester miscarriages, difficulty conceiving, and prior breast fibroadenoma excision. Following the birth of her first child, she later developed symptoms of palpitations, weight loss, and anxiety suggestive of thyroid dysfunction.

Lynd Ward (1905–1985) was born in Chicago and studied at Columbia Teachers College in New York City and at the National Academy of Graphic Arts and Bookmaking in Leipzig, Germany. Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly prominent feature of modern hiring, creating opportunities to enhance efficiency and consistency in selection. This study examined how AI transparency, AI literacy, and attitudes toward AI shape applicants’ perceptions of fairness when engaging with AI-scored pre-hire assessments. A sample of 290 U.S. adults were randomly assigned to either a high- or low-transparency hiring scenario and then completed measures of AI literacy, attitudes toward AI, and procedural fairness. Results indicated that both AI literacy and attitudes toward AI were strong and significant predictors of perceived procedural fairness, suggesting that applicants who feel knowledgeable about AI …

Understanding human driving decisions is crucial for intelligent transportation research. Most existing studies focus on individual vehicles in limited contexts, which restricts broader applicability of results. Leveraging Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) infrastructure, this study introduces a machine learning framework to model driving actions and detect outliers across diverse environments. This approach features a semantically enabled clustering method that groups similar driving behaviors based on speed and actions. It also adds a time-series learning model to identify typical driving behaviors across various contexts, thereby enabling detection of abnormal driving actions. Importance: The availability of psychedelic retreats has grown to meet the demand for access to these substances. Despite centuries of use among Indigenous communities, psychedelics can pose serious risks for some users.

Objective: To determine safety precautions that retreat organizations that offer psychedelic substances currently use.

Design, setting, and participants: This qualitative study included structured interviews conducted by phone or email with representatives from 49 organizations publicly advertising psychedelic retreat offerings from July to October 2023. This research investigates the influence of continuous learning on the effectiveness of customer value creation in the Tanzania’s healthcare system, with a specific focus on the mediating effects of innovation adoption value recognition. Using a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 360 healthcare professionals across three zonal referral hospitals in Tanzania. Data analysis employed a structural equation modelling using SMART-Partial Least Squares software version 4.0. Importance: Melatonin is the leading cause of unsupervised medication exposure and overdose in emergency departments for young children (aged 0-6 years). Existing literature has documented the benefits of melatonin in older children (aged 7-18 years) with neurologic conditions but has yet to examine young children.

Importance: Anal cancer screening is recommended for high-risk populations, particularly sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals. However, the cost-effectiveness of home-based self-sampling in increasing anal cancer screening uptake has not yet been evaluated in the US.

Objective: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of home-based anal self-sampling compared with clinic-based screening among SGM individuals.

In this nonpayment proceeding, the court granted the tenant's post-eviction Order to Show Cause, restoring the tenant to possession forthwith under RPAPL § 749(3). The re-execution of the warrant of eviction was stayed to allow the tenant to obtain payment for all outstanding rent arrears, along with the landlord's legal and marshal fees. The court noted that ordering post-eviction restoration before full payment is rare. Additionally, the court sua sponte joined the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) to the proceeding, pursuant to NYC Civil Court Act § 110(d), to facilitate payment assistance.

Persistent hypercalcemia after parathyroidectomy is a diagnostic challenge that requires careful evaluation beyond the parathyroid glands. We describe the case of a 76-year-old man with chronic kidney disease, resistant hypertension, and vestibular schwannoma who presented with weakness, constipation, and new, dark, raised lesions across his back. He reported undergoing parathyroidectomy one year earlier for presumed primary hyperparathyroidism, after which his hypercalcemia persisted. On admission, serum calcium was 13.1 mg/dL (reference = 8.5-10.5 mg/dL), and examination revealed numerous seborrheic keratoses across his posterior thoracolumbar region, consistent with the Leser-Trélat sign. A Tc-99m sestamibi scan localized a left inferior parathyroid adenoma. MRI …

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are devices used to lower the risk of critical pulmonary embolisms in patients with current deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or a high risk of developing such. These devices are used especially when there are contraindications to anticoagulants or when conservative therapy has failed. Typically, IVC filters are temporary and can be retrieved upon improvement in the patient's clotting status.

Rhabdomyolysis is a clinical syndrome characterised by skeletal muscle necrosis with subsequent release of intracellular constituents into the circulation. Although multifactorial in aetiology, chemotherapeutic agents, including etoposide, are rarely implicated. We report a 62-year-old male who presented to a tertiary care hospital in Muscat, Oman, in 2023 with severe rhabdomyolysis and advanced-stage diffuse large B-cell lymphoma following the first cycle of R-CEOP chemotherapy. Extensive evaluation excluded infectious, inflammatory and structural neuromuscular aetiologies. Work-up for metabolic myopathy suggested, but did not confirm, multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency. Disease risk and severity are influenced by genetics, epigenetics, and environmental factors. However, immune responses vary even among genetically similar or related individuals, shaped by inherited and noninherited factors. Using Caenorhabditis elegans, we found that pathogen susceptibility can be predicted by preinfection biomarkers. Individuals with high-basal expression of irg-5, an infection response gene regulated by the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase-1 (PMK-1) pathway, were more susceptible to Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. Demyelination associated microglia (DMAM) orchestrate the regenerative response to demyelination by clearing myelin debris and promoting oligodendrocyte maturation. Peroxisomal metabolism has emerged as a candidate regulator of DMAMs, though the cell-intrinsic contribution in microglia remains undefined. Here we elucidate the role of peroxisome integrity in DMAMs, using cuprizone-mediated demyelination coupled with conditional KO of peroxisome biogenesis factor 5 (PEX5) in microglia. Absent demyelination, PEX5 conditional KO (PEX5cKO) had minimal impact on homeostatic microglia. However, during cuprizone-induced demyelination, the emergence of DMAMs unmasked a critical requirement for peroxisome integrity. Breast and other solid tumors respond poorly to immune therapy. Myeloid cells (MCs) such as macrophages contribute to resistance. Established clinical evidence links cholesterol to cancer outcomes, with MC function being regulated by cholesterol metabolism. We screened MC-expressed regulators of cholesterol homeostasis linked to survival and identified the cholesterol efflux protein ABCA1. ABCA1 activity increases anticancer functions of macrophages: enhancing tumor infiltration, decreasing angiogenic potential, reducing efferocytosis, and improving support of CD8+ T cell activity. Mechanistically, different AKT isoforms are involved, through both PI3K-dependent and PI3K-independent mechanisms. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) occurs as a complex, multifaceted event driven by the interplay of tumor-permissive genetic mutations, the nature of the cellular origin, and microenvironmental stress. In this study, using primary human pancreatic acinar 3D organoids, we performed a CRISPR-KO screen targeting 199 potential tumor suppressors curated from clinical PDAC samples. Our data revealed significant enrichment of a list of candidate genes, with neurofibromatosis type 2 associated gene (NF2) emerging as the top target. IMPORTANCE: Antibiotics prescribed at hospital discharge are frequently unnecessary or suboptimal. Strategies to improve prescribing are not well defined.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a discharge-focused prospective audit and feedback process decreases antibiotic overuse at hospital discharge.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This stepped-wedge cluster-randomized clinical trial was conducted across participating units at 10 hospitals with antibiotic stewardship (AS) teams and supporting staff from December 5, 2022, to November 17, 2023. After a 24-week baseline period, 1 hospital crossed into the intervention arm every 2 weeks.
