The Existential Ambiguity Of Authentic Love In Alice Diop's Saint Omer, Kelli Fuery Aug 2026

The Existential Ambiguity Of Authentic Love In Alice Diop's Saint Omer, Kelli Fuery

CCI Articles and Research

Using Simone de Beauvoir's and Frantz Fanon's existentialist phenomenology, this article examines an existentialist ethics of recognition as an act of authentic love in Alice Diop's Saint Omer (2022). Loosely based on a true story, Saint Omer tells a story of filicide: Laurence Coly leaves her baby on a beach to die and we follow the subsequent courtroom drama as it unfolds. The film also follows Rama, a literature professor intending to write up the case as a contemporary version of the Medea myth. I suggest Saint Omer presents an ethics of recognition in its avoidance of the superficial question …

Closing Boston's Pediatric Asthma Equity Gap Through Housing-Integrated Care, Valeria Miranda Aug 2026

Closing Boston's Pediatric Asthma Equity Gap Through Housing-Integrated Care, Valeria Miranda

Capstones

Asthma morbidity is disproportionately high for preschool-age children (2-5 years) in Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan neighborhoods of Boston owing to poor housing conditions and a lack of coordination between housing remediation and healthcare systems. Data at the neighborhood level indicate rates of (0-17) emergency department visits as high as 144.1 per 10,000 in Mattapan, compared to 15.0 per 10,000 in West Roxbury, where Black children have emergency department visit rates that are 6.9 times more than the rates for White Children across the city (Boston Public Health Commission, 2023). Additionally, Community Health Worker (CHW)-led home visiting with environmental trigger remediation, …

Closing On The Cardiovascular Disparity Among Black Adults In Boston Through Church-Based Community Health Worker Intervention, Ana Porfirio Aug 2026

Closing On The Cardiovascular Disparity Among Black Adults In Boston Through Church-Based Community Health Worker Intervention, Ana Porfirio

Capstones

Hypertension and cardiovascular disease disproportionately affect Black adults age 40 and older in Boston's Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan neighborhoods, as heart disease mortality is three times higher among blacks than whites across Boston, and premature death rates are over twice as high in Dorchester and Roxbury as in richer neighborhoods. Historic redlining contributes to barriers in food access and is one factor behind Mattapan's highest age-adjusted mortality rate from heart disease in the city. These brief outlines a culturally concordant church-based Community Health Worker (CHW) intervention that includes a trained CHW who assists adults with uncontrolled hypertension in managing their …

Probable Renal-Limited Sarcoidosis Presenting With Tubulointerstitial Nephritis Without Granulomas On Renal Biopsy: A Diagnostic Challenge, Jawahar Hamood Alnoumani, Muhammad Shoaib, Asma Marzouqi, Ali Al Lawati

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Sarcoidosis is an idiopathic multisystem inflammatory disorder characterised by non-caseating granulomas and a wide range of reported prevalence. Renal-limited sarcoidosis is a rare manifestation of sarcoidosis which remains a diagnostic challenge due to lack of extra renal manifestation and specific diagnostic criteria. We report a 37-year-old man who presented to a tertiary care hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2024, with a two-month history of fever, weight loss, hypercalcaemia, high-to-normal 1,25-Vitamin D, high angiotensin-converting enzyme levels and acute kidney injury. His renal biopsy showed evidence of tubulointerstitial nephritis without granulomas or nephrocalcinosis. After exclusion of infectious, malignant, drug- related and autoimmune causes, …

Design And Characterization Of A 3d-Printed Dual Stacked Patch Antenna With Tunable Coupling For Uav Applications, Isabelle Lynn Brigman Aug 2026

Design And Characterization Of A 3d-Printed Dual Stacked Patch Antenna With Tunable Coupling For Uav Applications, Isabelle Lynn Brigman

Masters Theses

Antennas are a critical component of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication systems where compact size, light weight, and reliable operation across multiple frequency bands are critical. While microstrip patch antennas are attractive for UAV applications due to their low profile, low cost, and ease of fabrication, they are often limited by narrow bandwidth and fixed-frequency operation. To address these limitations, this thesis investigates a mechanically and electrically reconfigurable dual-stacked patch antenna fabricated using additive manufacturing techniques.

The proposed antenna consists of a slotted driven patch operating near 2.5 GHz with a second resonant mode near 5 GHz. A parasitic patch …

Plankton serve as live food for aquatic organisms and are indicators of water fertility, which is related to its abundance and diversity. Some live feeds also form a symbiotic relationship with macroalgae, known as epiphytic plankton, which is found in estuarine waters. The Brondong estuary area, Brondong District, Lamongan, East Java, with abundant Caulerpa sp. macroalgae, exemplifies these characteristics. This study aimed to identify the abundance, diversity, uniformity, and dominance indices of zooplankton, epiphytic microalgae, phytoplankton, and chlorophyll a in the Brondong estuary. Given that research on identifying epiphytic plankton species attached to Caulerpa sp. is lacking, this study investigates …

Molecular Characterization And Genotypic Distribution Of Hepatitis B Virus Isolates In Iraq: Prevalence Of Drug Resistance Mutations, Omar Hamid Salman, Raghad Harbi Al-Azzawi

Baghdad Science Journal

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains one of the most pervasive viral threats worldwide, posing a significant risk to millions. Due to the absence of proofreading activity during reverse transcription, HBV exhibits a high genetic variability. To date, ten distinct HBV genotypes have been identified globally, associated with varying disease outcomes, including progression to cirrhosis and carcinoma, as well as responses to antivirals. Consequently, genotypic analysis and molecular characterization of HBV are critical for optimizing therapeutic strategies. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of HBV genotypes among Iraqi patients and to characterize their molecular profiles. Therefore, a modified protocol was …

Risk Assessment Of Factors Affecting Physical And Chemical Stability Of Solid Dispersions Of Poorly-Soluble Drugs, Iyad H Allous, Shuaib I Alahmad, Youssef S Alahmad, Mirvat A Mourad

Baghdad Science Journal

Solid dispersions are one of the most promising strategies to overcome the poor aqueous solubility of some drug substances. However, the physical and chemical instability of solid dispersions has limited their use. The purpose of this study was to assess the risk of factors affecting the dissolution and chemical stability of solid dispersion products of poorly-water-soluble drugs. Five poorly-water-soluble drug substances were subjected to forced degradation studies, pH-dependent stability testing and excipient-drug substance compatibility testing and testing for effect of manufacturing parameters then the experimental data were analysed. FT-IR results and compatibility studies showed that carrier type variability and drug-to-carrier …

Dissecting Tumor Evolution And Immune Composition In Prc2 Loss (H3k27me3 Loss) Vs Retained Mpnst, Kuangying Yang Aug 2026

Dissecting Tumor Evolution And Immune Composition In Prc2 Loss (H3k27me3 Loss) Vs Retained Mpnst, Kuangying Yang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are aggressive sarcomas that arise sporadically or in the setting of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Although benign plexiform neurofibromas (PNs) are common in NF1, only a subset undergo malignant transformation, and the molecular events that define high-risk progression remain incompletely understood. A major axis of biological heterogeneity in MPNST is loss of Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2), commonly detected through loss of H3K27me3 and frequently mediated by alterations in SUZ12 or EED. This dissertation integrates three manuscript-based studies to define genomic resources, tumor-intrinsic vulnerabilities, and immune microenvironmental remodeling in NF1-associated peripheral nerve sheath tumors, …

Unfolding Dynamics Of Distractor Suppression Through Reaching Movement Trajectories, Shinhae Ahn Aug 2026

Unfolding Dynamics Of Distractor Suppression Through Reaching Movement Trajectories, Shinhae Ahn

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Efficient visual search requires prioritizing relevant information while suppressing salient but irrelevant distractors that compete for attention. Previous studies have shown that attentional suppression of salient distractors can be modulated by perceptual grouping (Ma & Abrams, 2023) and distractor salience (Stilwell et al., 2023; 2024). However, prior work has relied primarily on discrete keypress or oculomotor measures, such as reaction time, accuracy, and first saccadic destination. Although these measures provide important evidence about whether distractors interfere with or are suppressed during visual search, it still remains unclear how distractor-induced spatial biases emerge and change over the course of the target …

The Cul-De-Sac Paradox: The Relationship Between Walkability, Playability, And Children’S Physical Activity, Lydia Reader Aug 2026

The Cul-De-Sac Paradox: The Relationship Between Walkability, Playability, And Children’S Physical Activity, Lydia Reader

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Walkability and playability are two constructs on how the built environment can support physical activity, the former most relevant to adults and the latter designed with children in mind. There are concerns that walkability and playability are intrinsically in competition with one another, with urban forms supportive of physical activity for adults detrimental toward the physical activity of children and vice versa. This thesis explores this conflict using agent-based modeling as a tool for refining the theoretical constructs behind playability and children’s physical activity. We examine the state of the current evidence for the relationship between walkability and children’s physical …

Data-Driven Staging Of Neurodegenerative Pathology Related To Alzheimer’S Disease, Thomas Earnest Aug 2026

Data-Driven Staging Of Neurodegenerative Pathology Related To Alzheimer’S Disease, Thomas Earnest

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia, is a dual proteinopathy exhibiting deposits of extracellular amyloid-beta (Aβ) and intracellular tau in brain tissue. Models which describe the spatial and temporal trajectories of these pathologies have been invaluable for understanding AD and have the potential to support diagnosis, disease monitoring, and treatment development. Disease staging systems, which provide protocols for assessing individual disease severity based on their extent of brain pathology, have been crucial for explaining and diagnosing AD. However, these systems have been primarily informed by post-mortem histological assessments and are not directly applicable to disease assessment in …
