Spline-Based Factor-Graph Optimization With High-Grade Inertial Sensors, Kyle Leland, Clark N. Taylor, David Woodburn, Randal Beard
Spline-Based Factor-Graph Optimization With High-Grade Inertial Sensors, Kyle Leland, Clark N. Taylor, David Woodburn, Randal Beard
Faculty Publications
Inertial measurement units (IMUs) are central to global navigation satellite system-based and alternative navigation solutions. This paper combines three lines of research to explore a novel methodology for using inertial sensors: factor graphs, spline-based trajectory estimation, and high-grade inertial sensing. Spline-based factor-graph trajectory estimation is increasingly used in the literature, especially for asynchronous or high-rate sensors. However, prior models neglect the impact of the Earth’s rotation, which is significant for high-grade IMUs. We extend spline-based factor graphs to incorporate accelerometer and gyroscope models that account for the Earth’s rotation. We apply this approach to simulated data from high-grade inertial sensors …
Distal Tip Pressures & Acoustic Streaming In Vibrating Guidewires, Graham Gavin
Distal Tip Pressures & Acoustic Streaming In Vibrating Guidewires, Graham Gavin
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
INTRODUCTIONHigh frequency mechanical vibrations (20-50 kHz) applied to slender wires have been shown to disrupt thrombus and fibrous and calcified plaques. Advanced manufacturing techniques can achieve complex geometric features, such as tapering and distal tip geometries on wires, while still facilitating the transmission of vibrational energy (Anamagh et al.). These vibrating guidewires disrupt plaque tissue through direct contact ablation and acoustic effects such as pressure wave components, acoustic streaming and potentially, cavitation (Yao et al.).Acoustic pressure amplitudes near the tip are directly related to the onset of cavitation and also contribute to secondary effects like streaming. Morse proposed a solution …

This study evaluates the effectiveness of large language models (LLMs), specifically Claude Sonnet 4.0 and ChatGPT 4.1, for analyzing formative feedback to support student-centered learning (SCL). In large courses, instructors often struggle to promptly review and synthesize student input. We used a low-stakes task: analyzing 63 anonymous student responses to a Muddiest Point prompt in a human physiology class after a lecture on respiratory physiology. Across 20 runs, both LLMs consistently identified "Ventilation and Lung Mechanics" as the most frequent area of confusion, aligning with human analysis. LLMs completed the task significantly faster than a human reviewer (average: 19.6 s/31.0 …

Three voluminous inflated lobate lava flow complexes on the distal rifts of Axial Seamount are much larger than other known flows in the global spreading system. Each complex is 65–100 km2, is up to 130 m thick, and is ∼3.0–4.6 km3, almost 100 times the volumes of historical Axial flows. These extraordinary flows are 5–7 times thicker than typical drained ponds in sheet flows. They thickened as impounded lava accumulated under chilled crusts. As flows expanded, molten interiors partially drained and flow tops collapsed. Levees built around collapses when interiors are repressurized. This formation sequence was …

Accurately measuring street dimensions is essential to evaluating how their design influences both travel behavior and safety. However, gathering street-level information at city-scale with precision is difficult given the quantity and complexity of urban intersections. To address this challenge in the context of pedestrian crossings — a crucial component of walkability — we introduce a scalable and accurate method for automatically measuring crossing distance at both marked and unmarked crosswalks, applied to America’s 100 largest cities. First, OpenStreetMap coordinates were used to retrieve satellite imagery of intersections throughout each city — totaling roughly three million images. Next, Meta’s Segment Anything …

SF3B1 is an essential and ubiquitous splicing factor that plays a pivotal role in the early steps of pre-mRNA splicing. Recurrent somatic missense mutations in SF3B1 are frequent in cancers, but no constitutional variant has been reported so far. We describe here a cohort of 26 individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders, harbouring SF3B1 constitutional heterozygous variants that appeared mostly de novo. Patients present with a global developmental delay, associated with variable neurological and facial dysmorphic traits. A dichotomy may emerge between patients harbouring predicted loss of function (n = 9) and missense variants (n = 17), the latter being associated with …

Women In Law And The Draft, Thomas Helgerman, Benjamin David Pyle
Women In Law And The Draft, Thomas Helgerman, Benjamin David Pyle
Faculty Scholarship
Between 1964 and 1973, women’s representation in full-time law school programs rose fivefold, from 3.7% to 20.1%. This paper examines whether Vietnam War draft policy contributed to this increase. In 1968, men enrolled in law school lost eligibility for 2-S student deferments, threatening law schools’ tuition revenues and incentivizing schools to admit more women to stabilize enrollment. To test this mechanism, we construct a school-by-year dataset of enrollment counts split by women/men and full-time/part-time status. Using a uniform adoption difference-in-differences design, we find that women’s representation rises by 2 percentage points in full-time programs relative to part-time programs (which were …
Restoration Enhances Carbon Storage In Mangroves After Hurricane Impacts, Robert Puschendorf
Restoration Enhances Carbon Storage In Mangroves After Hurricane Impacts, Robert Puschendorf
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Mangroves are globally important blue-carbon ecosystems, yet their resilience isthreatened by extreme weather events and hydrological alterations. Insoutheastern Mexico, a large mangrove die-off occurred in 1995 followingHurricane Roxanne and Tropical Storm Opal, linked to storm-surge–drivenhypersalinity, sedimentation, and prolonged flooding. In 2005, an ecologicalrestoration program was launched in the Términos Lagoon region, focusing onhydrological rehabilitation and reforestation with Avicennia germinans. Fourteenyears later, we assessed ecosystem recovery by quantifying total ecosystemcarbon stocks (TECS), defined as the sum of 0–50-cm soil organic carbon andtree biomass carbon, across conserved, degraded, and restored sites, and byreconstructing vegetation cover dynamics from multi-decadal satellite imagery(1984–2023). TECS differed …

Two Axes Of White Matter Development, Audrey C Luo, Deanna M Barch, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Despite decades of neuroimaging research, how white matter develops along the length of major tracts in humans remains unknown. Here, we identify fundamental patterns of white matter maturation by examining developmental variation along major, long-range cortico-cortical tracts in youth ages 5-23 years using diffusion MRI from three large-scale, cross-sectional datasets (total N = 2716). Across datasets, we delineate two replicable axes of human white matter development. First, we find a deep-to-superficial axis, in which superficial tract regions near the cortical surface exhibit greater age-related change than deep tract regions. Second, we demonstrate that the development of superficial tract regions aligns …

Qatt&Ck: An Extended Framework For Classifying Adversarial Techniques And Tactics Threatening Quantum Computing Infrastructure Based On Mitre’S Att&Ck, Justin Benjamin Woodring
LSU Master's Theses
The integration of quantum computing into governmental and business processes has raised concerns about potential threats to these systems. To address this, we introduce a novel extension of the MITRE ATT&CK framework, QATT&CK, which provides an extended taxonomy for classifying adversarial Tactics and Techniques in quantum cybersecurity. Our adapted framework bridges the definitions of traditional cybersecurity with a focus on quantum computing infrastructure, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of adversarial behavior in this domain. To evaluate our proposed framework, we leverage current and ongoing research in quantum cyber threats, mapping real-world attacks to our taxonomy to demonstrate its effectiveness in …

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) aggregation is a hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases. Accumulation and aggregation of α-Syn are often observed in individuals with HIV-1 cognitive impairments. The direct mechanistic link between α-Syn dysregulation and HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) remains unclear. Emerging evidence suggests that epigenetic changes, particularly deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) demethylation, influence α-Syn regulation. We show that the HIV-1 protein viral protein R (Vpr) demethylates the antisense promoter within intron 1 of the alpha-synuclein gene (SNCA), potentially contributing to increased α-Syn expression. Elevated α-Syn promotes aggregation, causing synaptic dysfunction and impaired mitochondrial transport. These processes contribute to …

A Qualitative Examination Of The Motivations For Homeschooling Among Black Americans, Portia J. Witt
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This qualitative phenomenological study explored the motivations and lived experiences of African American homeschooling families. Twelve Black parents from multiple states participated in semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using Moustakas’ (1994) Modified Stevick–Colaizzi–Keen method and coded thematically using NVivo. Nine themes emerged: autonomy, holistic education, community belonging, online networks, public resources, curriculum gaps, personal values, effective learning, and legacy of harm. While racialization in schools—including tracking, microaggressions, and misidentification—contributed to participants’ decisions, motivations also reflected intersectional factors such as faith, disability, mental health needs, giftedness, and a desire for cultural protection and flexible learning. Findings suggest homeschooling serves as a …

Intestinal macrophages are essential for epithelial barrier repair. In homeostasis, macrophages are continuously replenished by recruitment of circulating CCR2+ monocytes into the intestinal lamina propria. This requires the commensal microbiota, however, the specific microbial factors and downstream host pathways that coordinate macrophage replenishment are inadequately understood. Here, we show that colonization with an E. coli isolate increased CCR2+ macrophages in the intestine and ameliorated pathology in a colitis model. Using human colonic organoids, we showed E. coli colonization induced CCL2 secretion by intestinal epithelial stem cells which promoted monocyte migration. In vivo, protection was abolished in the absence of epithelial …

Better Safe Than Sorry: Preventing Systemic Risks From Fintech Firm Insolvency In India, Manas Rohilla, Vaibhav Nishad
Indian Journal of Law and Technology
The Financial Technology (“FinTech”) sector in India has stood at the forefront of global financial innovation. However, this rapid expansion has also exposed systemic vulnerabilities that threaten the stability of the financial ecosystem. The Synapse bankruptcy in the United States serves as a cautionary tale, revealing the cascading risks posed by FinTech failures, including concentration risks, spillovers, and cyber vulnerabilities. India’s regulatory framework remains ill-equipped to address these challenges, leaving critical gaps in insolvency management for FinTech entities. This article undertakes a comprehensive analysis of systemic risks arising due to financial distress and insolvency situations in FinTech and proposes a …
