This mixed-methods action research study examined how implementing the CKLA, Core Knowledge Language Arts, curriculum, founded in the science of reading, enhanced the reading achievement among first-grade African American students. The purpose of the study was to explore how phonics instruction, specifically phonemic awareness, and multicultural literature would improve literacy. The study was guided by Ivankova’s six-phased mixed methods model integrating quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data collected included the DIBELS, Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, benchmark and progress monitoring assessments. The growing complexity of aviation operations, particularly in rotorcraft and vertical flight necessitates the development of intelligent, automated systems to enhance safety and situational awareness. This thesis investigates the application of artificial intelligence (AI), with a focus on deep learning (DL), to address critical safety challenges in aviation. Four core use cases are examined: helicopter cockpit flight data monitoring, runway detection, helipad segmentation, and obstacle localization around rotorcraft landing zones. Cutaneous manifestations of T-cell lymphomas may resemble common dermatologic or infectious conditions, increasing the risk of delayed recognition. We report a 78-year-old woman with known peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) who presented with a rapidly progressive, diffuse erythematous rash accompanied by cervical lymphadenopathy. Initial evaluation prioritized more common etiologies; however, inpatient medicine broadened the differential diagnosis, prompting early hematology and oncology consultation. Contrast-enhanced CT of the neck demonstrated multiple enlarged, partially necrotic left cervical lymph nodes consistent with disease progression. After multidisciplinary discussions and consideration of prognosis, the patient elected palliative-focused management with oncology follow-up. This case underscores the importance of …

This feeling nearly became a reality when the Department of Justice (“DOJ”) won an action blocking a proposed merger between mega publishing houses Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster in the case United States v. Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA (2021) (“Bertelsmann”). The antifraud provisions of the federal securities laws are statutory sledgehammers. Those who violate them can face severe sanctions, including ruinous monetary penalties and others that can effectively bar firms and individuals from the securities industries. The Securities and Exchange Commission is authorized to enforce these provisions with the full weight of the federal government. And the SEC does so vigorously.

Inclusion in Postsecondary Education

Many college students with disabilities face invisible barriers that go beyond access to ramps or extra time on tests. This study asked: How do students with disabilities actually feel in higher education? Do they feel safe? Do they feel like they belong? Do they feel liked?

Six students at a small private university shared their stories and took photographs over several weeks, using a method called Photovoice. These images, combined with interviews, reveal how deeply ableism and exclusion impact their sense of safety, belonging, and worth.

The study used polyvagal theory, which explains how our nervous systems respond to environments. …

Land cover data are commonly used to model the terrestrial carbon (C) sink, yet these data have wide margins of error that significantly alter estimates of global C storage. Here we demonstrate this data vulnerability in grasslands, which are critical to C cycling but whose estimated distribution has varied by >50 million km (3.5-42% of the Earth's terrestrial surface). Comparing multiple high-resolution land cover products with expertly annotated grassland data from six continents, we show sources of mapping error and discuss C implications based on 2023 United Nations (UN) FAO estimates. Inclusion in Postsecondary Education

The enrollment of students with disabilities in postsecondary education has continued to increase (U.S. Government Accountability Office, 2024). Nevertheless, these students’ stories often remain invisible. This Photovoice project centers the voices of students with disabilities in postsecondary education and uses polyvagal theory (Porges, 2011, 2021) to understand the importance of considering the nervous system when seeking to create and sustain inclusive higher education spaces.

This study revealed the ways the participants’ nervous system experienced life as college students with a disability, organized around the themes of their perceptions of felt safety, of belonging, and of being liked. Findings from this …

This document-based case study explains how land-use change along the Catawba River Corridor (Lancaster and York Counties, South Carolina) has been produced through the interaction of property rights (dominium) and rule-setting authority (imperium), showing why sovereignty continues to shape development even after land disputes appear “settled.” Through analyzing legal records (Treaty of Nation Ford, the 1959 Catawba Division of Assets Act, the 1986 Supreme Court timing decision, and the 1993 Settlement Act), planning documents, parcel records, and field observations, we trace how shifting jurisdiction and title certainty structured what kinds of land uses were possible and when. In this post-foreclosure holdover, the landlord sought possession of a condominium unit from an occupant who was not a tenant. The landlord acquired title through a referee's deed after a foreclosure sale. The occupant argued the foreclosure was a legal nullity, rendering the landlord's title invalid, and also raised defenses of defective service, retaliatory eviction, and harassment. The court rejected the occupant's standing challenge, finding the foreclosure judgment and deed valid, as the prior court's "nullity" finding was limited and did not vacate the judgment. Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic orthoflavivirus that poses a significant global health threat. It causes severe neuroinflammatory disease in humans and reproductive failure in swine. Because of the broad host range and cell tropism of JEV, identifying animal cell lines resistant to infection has been a persistent challenge. In this study, we demonstrate that Madin–Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) cells are resistant to JEV infection yet remain fully permissive to viral replication when transfected with viral genomic RNA. Using immunoblotting, immunofluorescence, and flow cytometry, we show that MDBK cells, unlike the highly susceptible baby hamster kidney (BHK-21) cells …

Reduced winter hair shedding in beef cows through the spring and summer months may contribute to heat stress and reduced performance in spring-calving herds. This study evaluated the relationship of hair shedding with the fertility and maternal performance of 72 Dexter cows. Hair shedding data for 20 May, 3 June, 17 June, and 1 July in 2019 were used to classify cows as high or low hair shedders. Hair shedding levels were lower (p < 0.05) for 2-year-old cows than for cows 7+ years of age for the first three dates and lower (p ≤ 0.05) for lactating cows than for dry cows on the first two dates. Concurrent and four years of historical performance records were used to assess the associations between hair shedding and cow–calf performance. Data from 230 natural matings in July and August from 2015 to 2019 were analyzed. Birth to weaning weight data were recorded from 2016 to 2019 on 124 spring-born calves. Cow fertility was higher (p < 0.05) for high-shed cows than for low-shed cows for the 1 July classification. When the records from cows that were dry in 2019 were excluded from testing, fertility was higher (p < 0.05) for high-shed cows than for low-shed cows at all four scoring dates. The associations of cow hair shedding levels with preweaning calf performance were minimal. Dexter cows exhibiting higher hair shedding levels in the spring and summer expressed higher summer fertility.
