Background: African Americans (AAs) suffer a higher stroke burden due to hypertension. Identifying genetic contributors to stroke among AAs with hypertension is critical to understanding the genetic basis of the disease, as well as detecting at-risk individuals.

Methods: In a population comprising over 10,700 AAs treated for hypertension from the Genetics of Hypertension Associated Treatments (GenHAT) and Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) studies, we performed an inverse variance-weighted meta-analysis of incident stroke. Additionally, we tested the predictive accuracy of a polygenic risk score (PRS) derived from a European ancestral population in both GenHAT and REGARDS AAs …

In this paper, we outline the need for a coordinated international effort toward the building of an open-access Global Ocean Oxygen Database and ATlas (GO2DAT) complying with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). GO2DAT will combine data from the coastal and open ocean, as measured by the chemical Winkler titration method or by sensors (e.g., optodes, electrodes) from Eulerian and Lagrangian platforms (e.g., ships, moorings, profiling floats, gliders, ships of opportunities, marine mammals, cabled observatories). GO2DAT will further adopt a community-agreed, fully documented metadata format and a consistent quality control (QC) procedure and quality flagging (QF) system. GO2DAT …

Codling moth (CM) (Cydia pomonella L.), a devastating pest, creates a serious issue for apple production and marketing in apple-producing countries. Therefore, effective nondestructive early detection of external and internal defects in CM-infested apples could remarkably prevent postharvest losses and improve the quality of the final product. In this study, near-infrared (NIR) hyperspectral reflectance imaging in the wavelength range of 900–1700 nm was applied to detect CM infestation at the pixel level for three organic apple cultivars, namely Gala, Fuji and Granny Smith. An effective region of interest (ROI) acquisition procedure along with different machine learning and data processing …

Scoring Measures Of Word Dictation Curriculum-Based Measurement In Writing: Effects Of Incremental Administration, Apryl L. Poch, Abigail A. Allen, Erica S. Lembke Dec 2021

Scoring Measures Of Word Dictation Curriculum-Based Measurement In Writing: Effects Of Incremental Administration, Apryl L. Poch, Abigail A. Allen, Erica S. Lembke

Special Education and Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Spelling has been identified as a key transcription skill that emerges during the elementary years as students learn how to write and subsequently develop fluency with writing, making the assessment of spelling a critical component of evaluation systems within schools. This includes the use of curriculum-based measures of writing (CBM-W). This study examined the extent to which word dictation CBM-W administered during the Fall, Winter, and Spring of an academic year maintained technical adequacy across 1-min time intervals in grades 1–3. Results revealed moderate predictive and concurrent validity estimates with the Spelling subtest of the Weschler Individual Achievement Test-III. Statistically …

Perinatal Corticosteroids: Latent Neurodevelopment Of The Preterm Infant, Isabell Biene Purdy Dec 2021

Perinatal Corticosteroids: Latent Neurodevelopment Of The Preterm Infant, Isabell Biene Purdy

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate potential relationships between perinatal dexamethasone treatment of premature infants and latent child development. Often, postnatal corticosteroid (PNS) is offered in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to wean mechanical ventilation. Experts suggested minimizing PNS use after studies identified higher milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) as a risk factor for adverse developmental outcomes. This study quantified fetal dexamethasone and cumulative perinatal dexamethasone by mg/kg exposure to accurately assess associations between steroid exposure and premature infant behavioral development.

Perceptions Of Cardiac Self-Care Among Lebanese Patients And Their Family Caregivers, Nuhad Yazbik Dumit Dec 2021

Perceptions Of Cardiac Self-Care Among Lebanese Patients And Their Family Caregivers, Nuhad Yazbik Dumit

Dissertations

In Lebanon cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of mortality and morbidity. Assisting people to live with cardiac illness is a problem needing attention. Literature demonstrated significant association between effective self-care practices and secondary prevention of cardiac disease. However, adopting interventions effective in the West may yield different outcomes if not culturally sensitive. The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of cardiac self-care among Lebanese patients and their family caregivers. The specific aims were to describe the cultural context of self-care in Lebanon, and to explore roles of cardiac patients and caregivers to enhance self-care practices.

A Nationally Representative Survey Of Depression Symptoms Among Jordanian Adolescents: Associations With Depression Stigma, Depression Etiological Beliefs, And Likelihood To Seek Help For Depression, Latefa Ali Dardas Dec 2021

A Nationally Representative Survey Of Depression Symptoms Among Jordanian Adolescents: Associations With Depression Stigma, Depression Etiological Beliefs, And Likelihood To Seek Help For Depression, Latefa Ali Dardas

Dissertations

Arab adolescents are considered a particularly vulnerable population to depression. The substantial lack of mental health services and the stigma associated with mental illness on the one hand; and poverty, unemployment, and lack of reasonable hopes for a decent future in the context of corruption of regimes and perceived social injustice on the other, call for establishing committed and effective policies to tackle depression and its associated stigma among Arab adolescents at risk for or diagnosed with depression. However, there is a substantial lack of research that can inform the current profile of adolescent depression in the Arab region. We …

The Health-Related Quality Of Life Of Adults With Down Syndrome, Rebecca Jermyn Graves

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and factors associated with the HRQOL of adults with Down syndrome (DS) as reported by adults with DS and their caregivers. The study was designed to compare measures of HRQOL, health problems, health risks, and health-care utilization of adults with DS based on self-report with those from caregiver-report and to explore associations between HRQOL and health problems, health risks, health-care utilization, adaptive behavior, and demographic characteristics.

Adopting Agility In Academia Through Pilot Projects, Omar Ochoa, Massood Towhidnejad

Papers

This innovate practice work in progress paper presents our initial findings about the application of agile process in the day to day operation of an academic department. The benefits of agile methods, which are processes that are lightweight and people-oriented, are well-known. Agile methods provide the ability to respond faster to the changing needs of stakeholders, improved product quality, team over individual goals, and better transparency. Therefore, one would expect adaption of the agile process within academic environment would be welcomed, however, unique issues exist within faculty that impact adoption; faculty have different goals that change through their tenure, and …

Cultivating An Online Network For Mentoring Preservice And In-Service Teachers, Lisa Amick, Joni Meade, Margaret J. Mohr-Schroeder

Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children

This report details the work of two initial teacher certification programs at a major university in Kentucky that are implementing two innovative strategies for preservice teachers to network, build community, and grow in their practice. The utilization of Slack, a free online communication platform, has proven successful in getting preservice teachers to share ideas, pose and respond to professional questions, and program information dissemination. The use of a NIC (Networked Improvement Community) is a grant funded endeavor that brought together preservice teachers, their cooperating teachers, and university faculty members to create a professional learning community where a problem of practice …
