This paper describes an apparatus used to remove chlorine from chloride salt-based nuclear wastes from electrochemical reprocessing and/or chloride-based molten salt reactors (MSRs) through dechlorination by reacting the salts with ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (NH4H2PO4 or ADP) at temperatures up to 600 °C to produce NH4Cl as a byproduct. The benefits of removing the Cl from these salts include 37Cl recovery from Cl-based MSR salts, formation of UCl3 from the NH4Cl, as well as removal of Cl from the salts and conversion of the salt cations to oxides to allow …

Exploring The Potential Use Of Porous Silica Nanoparticles In Cest-Mri, Lydia Makotamo Nov 2021

Exploring The Potential Use Of Porous Silica Nanoparticles In Cest-Mri, Lydia Makotamo

Dissertations and Theses

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a widely used modality in diagnostics, treatment, and monitoring various conditions due to its ability to generate high-resolution images using non-ionizing radiation. The advent of contrast agents, which generally work by increasing the spin relaxation rate constants of water protons, has led to image enhancement. Despite the usefulness of this class of agents in diagnostic medicine, their inability to provide in-depth functional and anatomical information, coupled with their high detection limits, has led to new agents being explored.

Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) presents an alternative route to generate signals via repetitive saturations transfers between …

Radioresistance In Prostate Cancer: Focus On The Interplay Between Nf-Κb And Sod, Sameera Kumar, Daret St. Clair

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

Prostate cancer occurs frequently in men and can often lead to death. Many cancers, including prostate cancer, can be initiated by oxidative insult caused by free radicals and reactive oxygen species. The superoxide dismutase family removes the oxygen-derived reactive oxygen species, and increased superoxide dismutase activity can often be protective against prostate cancer. Prostate cancer can be treated in a variety of ways, including surgery, androgen deprivation therapy, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. The clinical trajectory of prostate cancer varies from patient to patient, but more aggressive tumors often tend to be radioresistant. This is often due to the free-radical and …

Will Other States Adopt California’S Ab 51 After Its Validation By The Ninth Circuit?, Henry Gluck Nov 2021

Will Other States Adopt California’S Ab 51 After Its Validation By The Ninth Circuit?, Henry Gluck

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution (CJCR) Blog

Roughly sixty million Americans have relinquished their right to litigate any work-related claims against their employers. This is due to employers including arbitration clauses in employment contracts—a condition of employment that has led to a mass waiver of this constitutionally granted right. The pretext for this phenomenon is that arbitration is cheaper and more efficient than litigation. But in fact, arbitration works to limit employers’ legal exposure and litigation costs, and helps keep incidents of workplace abuse unexposed. Employees are less likely to be awarded damages in arbitration, and the awards are usually smaller. Employees who are governed by forced …

Five Core Dimensions Of Purposeful System Transformation, Sandra Waddock, Steve Waddell

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

System transformation is fundamental, broad, deep, and multi-scalar change that involves a paradigm change, i.e., a radical shift, in five key interrelated and interactive dimensions that constitute the whole of a “complexly wicked” socio-ecological system. This paper discusses these dimensions and provides a rationale for focusing on them. The dimensions are purpose(s), perspectives, and performance metrics. They provide an umbrella for the other two, power(s) relationships and dynamics, and the combination of practices, policies, and processes (practices for short) that characterize how a given socio-ecological system operates.

Beyond The Boundaries Of Definitions: Building An Effective, New And Multicriteria Impact Investing Assessment Tool, José Luis Fernández Fernández, Braulio Pareja-Cano, Alvaro Navarro-Reguero

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

Impact investing was established with the objective of facing social problems through investments with a dual return: a financial plus social and/or environmental return. However, academics have not reached a consensus on the definition of impact investing, and there is a gap in the literature regarding the fundamental criteria of impact investing. This lack of consensus has produced serious problems for impact investors, one of which is that investors cannot clearly define their impact expectations at the time of investment, which makes their decision-making processes groundless. For this reason, this study reviews the concept of impact investing and proposes an …

The development of fluorescence dyes for near‐infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging has been a significant interest for deep tissue imaging. Among many imaging fluoroprobes, indocyanine green (ICG) and its analogues have been used in oncology and other medical applications. However, these imaging agents still experience poor imaging capabilities due to low tumor targetability, photostability, and sensitivity in the biological milieu. Thus, developing a biocompatible NIR imaging dye from natural resources holds the potential of facilitating cancer cell/tissue imaging. Chlorophyll (Chl) has been demonstrated to be a potential candidate for imaging purposes due to its natural NIR absorption qualities and its wide …
