A Study Of The Impact Of Infrastructures On Public Bicycle-Sharing System Demand, Lijie Zhou
A Study Of The Impact Of Infrastructures On Public Bicycle-Sharing System Demand, Lijie Zhou
Theses (2016-Present)
A bicycle-sharing system (public bicycle system, or bike-share scheme) is a service in which bicycles are made available for shared use to individuals on a short-term basis for a price or free. To study the impacts of bike infrastructures (particularly bike lanes and bike paths) on bicycle sharing system demand, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models with exogenous factors are proposed to capture the relationships among the variables in a longitudinal analysis. The results show that every mile of bike lane added to the Houston bike share system will result in 38 average daily ridership increase in seven days of …
Compound-20 (Analog Of Curcumin) Prevents Acrolein-Induced Changes In Rats, Nelson Chijioke Nwaiwu
Compound-20 (Analog Of Curcumin) Prevents Acrolein-Induced Changes In Rats, Nelson Chijioke Nwaiwu
Theses (2016-Present)
Research has shown that acrolein, a known environmental pollutant, contributes to generation of free radicals leading to oxidative stress and physiological damage. Curcumin has been known to improve damages from oxidative stress due to its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been reported that to exert such an effect, a large dose of curcumin needs to be consumed on daily bases due to its high excretion through kidney. Here in collaboration with Dr. Chelliah from department of pharmaceutical, an analog form of curcumin (compound-20) was synthesized with promising more potent activity and absorption. The objective of this study was to …
V-Myb Avian Myel Oblast Viral Oncogene Homolog Like 1 (Mybl1) Knockdown And Its Role In A Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Nabras Mahmoud Abdulrahman
V-Myb Avian Myel Oblast Viral Oncogene Homolog Like 1 (Mybl1) Knockdown And Its Role In A Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Nabras Mahmoud Abdulrahman
Theses (2016-Present)
Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is defined as negative for three genes, estrogen receptor (ESR), progesterone receptor (PR) and Human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER2-neu) genes. Previous data show the V-Myb Avian Myel oblast Viral Oncogene Homolog Like 1 (MYBL1) gene is over-expressed in Triple negative breast cancer cell line (MDA-MB231). MYBL1 belongs to the MYB family of genes which are transcription factors and proto-oncogenes which are associated with cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, and differentiation, all of which are key events associated with cancers. It could be that MYBL1 contributes to these same processes in TNBC. Instead of studying MYBL1’s …

Analyzing Effectiveness Of Rainwater Harvesting On Runoff Volume Reduction A Case Study Of Harris County In Texas, Elaheh Roohbakhsh Farahati
Theses (2016-Present)
This study presents an analysis of the effectiveness of the RainWater Harvesting (RWH) system as a decentralized stormwater management system in a neighborhood scale to reduce runoff volume flows to stormwater drainage systems. For this purpose, a fit between modeled and recorded runoff during a 10-year time frame (2010 - 2019) for a considered rainfall gage station within a specific watershed was calculated. The densely populated neighborhood in Gulfton, in the city of Houston and which is located within the 100- or 500-year floodplain, was selected for this analysis. Daily water balance simulation was executed, without RWH tank and then …

Background African Trypanosomiases threaten the life of both humans and animals. Trypanosomes are transmitted by tsetse and other biting flies. In Rwanda, the African Animal Trypanosomiasis (AAT) endemic area is mainly around the tsetse-infested Akagera National Park (NP). The study aimed to identify Trypanosoma species circulating in cattle, their genetic diversity and distribution around the Akagera NP. Methodology A cross-sectional study was carried out in four districts, where 1,037 cattle blood samples were collected. The presence of trypanosomes was determined by microscopy, immunolog-ical rapid test VerY Diag and PCR coupled with High-Resolution Melt (HRM) analysis. A parametric test (ANOVA) was …

Background: African trypanosomiasis, which is mainly transmitted by tsetse flies (Glossina spp.), is a threat to public health and a significant hindrance to animal production. Tools that can reduce tsetse densities and interrupt disease transmission exist, but their large-scale deployment is limited by high implementation costs. This is in part limited by the absence of knowledge of breeding sites and dispersal data, and tools that can predict these in the absence of ground-truthing. Methods: In Kenya, tsetse collections were carried out in 261 randomized points within Shimba Hills National Reserve (SHNR) and villages up to 5 km from the reserve …

We have assessed the distribution and mating type of chickpea blight (Didymella rabiei (Kov.) v. Arx) from a total of 350 and 272 fields in major chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) growing areas of Ethiopia for two consecutive cropping seasons 2017 and 2018, respectively. The prevalence of D. rabiei was 20 % for the year 2017 and 7% for 2018. Severity range of 2−9 and incidence of 10–100 % were recorded for both seasons in only 7–20 % of the assed fields. Field prevalence of 2017 and 2018 seasons were significantly different (df = 31; p < 0.001 and df = 31; p < 0.001, respectively). Similarly, the disease prevalence of both seasons was significantly different (df = 31; p < 0.001). The disease prevalence ratio frequency was highly deviated from (1:1) for both seasons (X2 = 213.62 p= <0.001; X2 = 144.36 p = 0.01). Genomic DNA of Representative samples were extracted from single spore culture and Mating type 1 (MAT1-1) specific primer SP21, Mating type 2 (MAT1-2) specific primer Tail 5, and a flanking region-specific primer Com1 assay were multiplexed in a single PCR reaction to determine the occurrence of D. rabiei mating type in Ethiopia. Out of 156 samples, only 15 samples were positive to MAT1-1 (∼10 %) with the ratio of 9:1. MAT 1−2 type was the most dominant and possibly the asexual reproduction of D. rabiei is the major type in Ethiopia. The result is important for Ascochyta blight management in breeding strategy.

Many species of thrips (Thysanoptera) in the family Thripidae form mating aggregations, but the adaptive significance of these aggregations and the extent of male and female mate choice is poorly understood. We studied the mating behaviour of the bean flower thrips Megalurothrips sjostedti (Trybom) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), which forms male aggregations and occurs across sub-Saharan Africa. We tested whether males choose mates by female age or mating status. No-choice mating bioassays with one male and one female were used to simulate the way males usually encounter only one female at a time in aggregations in the field. Virgin females violently resisted …

Background: In holometabolous insects, environmental factors experienced in pre-imaginal life stages affect the life-history traits within that stage and can also influence subsequent life stages. Here, I assessed tolerance to water immersion by the larval instars of the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans L. (Diptera: Muscidae) and its impact on the life-history traits of their subsequent life stages. Results: After submerging the three larval instars of S. calcitrans in distilled water, I found that the first instar larvae remained active for longer as compared to the second and third instar larvae. Also, the first instar larvae took a longer period to …

We present findings from an outbreak of a heartwater-like disease in camels that killed at least 2000 adult animals in Kenya in 2016. Clinical signs included excitability, head pressing, aimless wandering, recumbency, and fast breathing followed by death after about 4 days. The observed morbidity in one herd was 40% with an average mortality of 7.5% in animals that received early antibiotic treatments. In untreated adults, the case fatality rate reached 100%. Gross pathology showed pulmonary edema, pleural exudate, hydrothorax, hydropericardium, ascites, enlarged “cooked” liver, nephrosis, and blood in the abomasum and intestine. Using established PCR-based protocols for tick-borne pathogens, …

Background: Trypanosoma brucei species are motile protozoan parasites that are cyclically transmitted by tsetse fly (genus Glossina) causing human sleeping sickness and nagana in livestock in sub-Saharan Africa. African trypanosomes display digenetic life cycle stages in the tsetse fly vector and in their mammalian host. Experimental work on insect-stage trypanosomes is challenging because of the difficulty in setting up successful in vitro cultures. Therefore, there is limited knowledge on the trypanosome biology during its development in the tsetse fly. Consequently, this limits the development of new strategies for blocking parasite transmission in the tsetse fly. Methods: In this study, RNA-Seq …

Background: In a recent study using DNA barcoding, we identified the plants fed upon by four Afro-tropical mosquito species that vector dengue, malaria, and Rift Valley fever. Herein, we have expanded on this study by investigating the role of three of the plants, Pithecellobium dulce (Fabaceae), Leonotis nepetifolia (Lamiaceae), and Opuntia ficus-indica (Cactaceae), on the survival, fecundity, and egg viability of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti. Methods: We tested these effects using females that received (i) an initial three rations of blood meals and (ii) no blood meal at all. Two controls were included: age-matched females fed on glucose solution …

Background: Insect growth regulators (IGRs) can control insect vector populations by disrupting growth and development in juvenile stages of the vectors. We previously identified and described the curry tree (Murraya koenigii (L.) Spreng) phytochemical leaf extract composition (neplanocin A, 3-(1-naphthyl)-l-alanine, lumiflavine, terezine C, agelaspongin and murrayazolinol), which disrupted growth and development in Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto mosquito larvae by inducing morphogenetic abnormalities, reducing locomotion and delaying pupation in the mosquito. Here, we attempted to establish the transcriptional process in the larvae that underpins these phenotypes in the mosquito. Methods: We first exposed third-fourth instar larvae of the mosquito to the …

In East Africa, insect farming is a rapidly growing business providing access to ‘climate-smart’ protein, other nutrients, and income. With the continental drive to transform existing food systems that are becoming continuously unsustainable due to scarcity of arable land and water, and high ecological imprint, insect farming for food and feed with circular economy potential has gained remarkable interest. In this review, we report on the recent research trends on key substrates and insect species commonly farmed, map of commercial enterprises, insect nutritional values, processing techniques, marketing, regulatory framework, and lessons learnt on insect farming. These findings provide important answers …

Whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) are devastating agricultural pests of economic importance vectoring pathogenic plant viruses. Knowledge on their diversity and distribution in Kenya is scanty, limiting development of effective sustainable management strategies. The present study is aimed at identifying whitefly pest species present in Kenya across different agroecological zones and establish predictive models for the most abundant species in Africa. Whiteflies were sampled in Kenya from key crops known to be severely infested and identified using 16S rRNA markers and complete mitochondrial genomes. Four whitefly species were identified: Aleyrodes proletella, Aleurodicus dispersus, Bemisia afer and Trialeurodesvaporariorum, the latter being the most …

Tuta absoluta is one of the most devastating pests of Solanaceae crops in Africa. We previously demonstrated the efficacy of Metarhizium anisopliae isolates ICIPE 18, ICIPE 20 and ICIPE 665 against adult T. absoluta. However, adequate strain selection and accurate spatial prediction are fundamental to optimize their efficacy and formulations before field deployment. This study therefore assessed the thermotolerance, conidial yield and virulence (between 15 and 35 °C) of these potent isolates. Over 90% of conidia germinated at 20, 25 and 30 °C while no germination occurred at 15 °C. Growth of the three isolates occurred at all temperatures, but …

Background: Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) are of global importance, especially in sub-Saharan Africa where they represent a major constraint to livestock production. Their association with human disease is also increasingly recognized, signalling their zoonotic importance. It is therefore crucial to investigate TBPs prevalence in livestock populations and the factors associated with their presence. We set out to identify TBPs present in cattle and to determine associated risk factors in western Kenya, where smallholder livestock production is important for subsistence and market-driven income. Results: Tick-borne pathogen infections in blood samples collected from cattle at livestock markets and slaughterhouses between May 2017 and …

Multi-hop Relay networks are proposed to fulfill the demanding coverage and capacity requirements for current applications in a cost efficient way. It can be used in IMT-Advanced technologies such as 3GPP LTE-Advanced. In this paper, Resource Blocks (RBs) proposed scheduling scheme is considered for zero multi-hop links overflow in Uplink LTE-Advanced. Then based on this scheduling scheme and other network assumptions the Optimum Relay Station (RS) placement in the cell was estimated using nonlinear optimization problem in order to improve LTE-A Uplink performance. The average throughput, Throughput gain, and Mean File Transfer Time (MFTT) are considered as performance measures. The …

Thermal Performance Of Loop Thermosyphon Charged By Nanofluid For Cooling Electronic Component., Mohamed Saafan, Hamed Eltahan, Roaya Jaleel
Mansoura Engineering Journal
This work presents a theoretical and experimental investigation on the thermal performance of thermosyphon for cooling high heat flux. The working fluid charged in the evaporator is pure water or Nano fluid (Al2O3+water). In theoretical model, the flow is described by continuity, momentum and energy equations. The flow is assumed laminar, steady and two dimensional with constant properties. The differential forms of governing equations are, numerically, solved using finite difference technique. According to this technique, the partial differentials are transformed to set of linear algebraic equations. These equations are solved, numerically, by Gauss-Siedel iterative method. an experimental set up is …

An Investigation On Drying Process In A Novel Configuration Of Fluidized Bed., Abdelsamed Rashid, Ahmed Hegazi, Farouk Okasha
Mansoura Engineering Journal
This paper describes an experimental study on drying process in a novel configuration of fluidized bed, namely jetting fountain fluidized bed, and in conventional fluidized bed as well. The experiments have been carried out using a fluidized bed of 105 mm inner diameter. Fenugreek seeds have been used as bed materials to be dried. The influences of different parameters on drying process have been investigated. Those include bed temperature, air fluidization velocity, and jet air ratio and jet height. The experimental results demonstrate that the drying rate increases with the increase in jet air ratio and inlet air temperature. Jetting …

Sustainability in the built environment is of increasing importance, particularly in the concrete structures. Slag from iron and steel industries can be used in some cases to replace natural aggregates in construction. Steel slag aggregate is an engineered product with great potential as replacement to naturally occurring aggregates in construction projects due to its distinctive physical and chemical properties. It is a 100% recyclable material. In this research, a comprehensive laboratory evaluation of the use of steel slag as a Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) aggregate was conducted. The performance of steel slag aggregates as a construction material in comparison to …

Effect Of Upstream Accumulated Sediments On Fayoum Type Weir Efficiency., Mohammed El-Gamal, Mohamed Abdel Hady
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Under various conditions of flows in open channels with time, sediments are accumulated gradually upstream weirs. Accumulated sediments upstream weirs cause the back water curve and discharge coefficient (Cd) of weirs to change. For this reason, the effect of four different models of accumulated sediments on the discharge coefficient and the maximum height of backwater curve (Z) of Fayoum type weir (narrow crested weir) had been experimentally investigated. In this research, four values of discharges equal to 8 lit. /sec., 10 lit. /sec., 13 lit. /sec. and 15 lit. /sec. were used. From the analysis of results, compared with the …

Optimum Radius Of Cylinderical Envelope Of Solar Energy Receiver., Mahmoud Awad
Mansoura Engineering Journal
This paper presents an analytical procedure for estimation of the optimum radius of the cylindrical envelope of solar energy receiver. The cylindrical solar absorber and the envelope of the solar receiver are located horizontally and their axes are coincided. The study is based on the fact of the variation of the convective heat loss from the solar receiver to the surrounding air by varying the envelope radius for a given absorber radius and given boundary conditions. For the case of an unevacuated air layer in the cylindrical space in between the solar absorber and the envelope it is found that …

Energy Monitoring And Control Using New Linearized Power Flow Technique., S. Farghal, Kamal Shebl, A. Abou El-Ela
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The paper presents a proposed technique with linearized formula for computing the transmission line power flow in terms of injected power due to any change in power system loading conditions. The formula relates the line power flows to both loads and power generation directly for a transmission network configuration. Being in an integral form, new power flows on the lines can be obtained directly without running a complete load flow programs when the total system generation changes. This formula is a fairly general one as it is suitable for various energy monitoring and control applications such as generation shifts to …
