Diagnostic Yield Of Genetic Testing In 324 Infants With Hypotonia., Sonal Sharma, Elena Repnikova, Janelle R. Noel-Macdonnell Phd, Jean-Baptist Lepichon

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

This retrospective cohort study was designed to determine the yield of genetic tests in hypotonic infants and develop a diagnostic algorithm. Out of 496 patients identified by International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 9/10 coding, 324 patients met the inclusion criteria. Diagnostic yields were 32% for karyotype, 19% for microarray, 30% for targeted genetic tests, 38% for gene panels, and 31% for exome sequencing. In addition, we considered the diagnostic contribution of ancillary tests, including neuroimaging, metabolic tests, and so forth. The combination of microarray and exome sequencing gave the highest diagnostic yield. None of the other tests added significant value …

The Myth Of The Great Writ, Leah M. Litman Dec 2021

The Myth Of The Great Writ, Leah M. Litman

Articles

Habeas corpus is known as the “Great Writ” because it supposedly protects individual liberty against government overreach and guards against wrongful detentions. This idea shapes habeas doctrine, federal courts theories, and habeas-reform proposals.

It is also incomplete. While the writ has sometimes protected individual liberty, it has also served as a vehicle for the legitimation of excesses of governmental power. A more complete picture of the writ emerges when one considers traditionally neglected areas of public law that are often treated as distinct—the law of slavery and freedom, Native American affairs, and immigration. There, habeas has empowered abusive exercises of …

Redemptive Suffering In A Contemporary Context, Allison Magera Dec 2021

Redemptive Suffering In A Contemporary Context, Allison Magera

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

Redemptive suffering is a Christian understanding of suffering which holds that the pain and adversities of everyday life can be spiritually united to Christ’s suffering and death on the cross in petition for the needs and salvation of oneself or others. Salvifici Doloris proves to be a foundational document in comprehending the many facets of this concept theologically, but practically, personal prayer in petition is often how one can spiritually “share in the sufferings of Christ.” There is also potential for this theological concept to apply elsewhere in Christianity outside of Catholicism, and in practice this concept should be delivered …

Cadmium And Chromium Evaluation Of Offutt Air Force Base Aircraft Maintenance Bay, Nickolas Lamal Dec 2021

Cadmium And Chromium Evaluation Of Offutt Air Force Base Aircraft Maintenance Bay, Nickolas Lamal

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

The 55th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron is based out of Offutt Air Force Base (AFB). The organization has requested testing of Air Ground Equipment (AGE) maintenance operations for heavy metals, specifically cadmium and chromium while evaluating one break area for the harmful compounds. It is hypothesized that heavy metals may be in excessive limits and could potentially harm staff and their families as take-home toxins. If left uninvestigated and evaluated, excessive exposure to heavy metals could cause injury or illness within the unit’s ranks, decreasing unit effectiveness and efficiency. Sampling methods include preliminary assessments of break area and adjacent glass bead …

A Literature Review Of Paid Sick Leave And Disparate Populations In The United States During The Covid Pandemic, Jessica Davies Dec 2021

A Literature Review Of Paid Sick Leave And Disparate Populations In The United States During The Covid Pandemic, Jessica Davies

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

The COVID pandemic is providing many public health and health policy learning opportunities to identify disparities among women, minorities, and underserved/distressed populations and inform subsequent policy-level strategies. It is recommended people stay home when they are sick; yet, not all people have access to paid sick leave. Individuals are left with the unfortunate decision to lose pay or go to work when they are ill. This is disconcerting in any given year with the annual flu illness and other communicable diseases; however, especially concerning during the COVID pandemic given the high virus transmissibility. Paid sick leave is not universally accessible …

Developing And Piloting An E-Learning Module On Respiratory Protection, Emily Girard Dec 2021

Developing And Piloting An E-Learning Module On Respiratory Protection, Emily Girard

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Respiratory diseases are one of the most common causes of occupational illnesses in the United States. Many occupations use personal protective equipment (PPE) in the form of respirators to protect against respiratory hazards when other control methods are not effective. However, some workers may not have had adequate training on their use. An e-learning module was developed to provide information about respirators and their use in agriculture. The interactions of matching, sorting, and review questions require the user to be an active participant with the goal of reinforcing the information. It was hypothesized the average summative assessment score would increase …

Evaluating Nebraska Ems Providers' Ability And Willingness To Respond To Bioterrorism Emergencies, Ryan Houser

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Previous studies have found that public health systems within the United States are inadequately prepared for an act of biological terrorism. This study utilized an Internet-based survey to assess the level of preparedness and willingness to respond to a bioterrorism attack, and identify factors that predict preparedness and willingness among Nebraska Emergency Medical Service providers, who are key to resilience in the face of an attack. The survey was available for one month in 2021 during which 190 EMS providers responded to the survey. The subjects included Registered Nurses, doctors, EMTs, and paramedics. Only 10% of the respondents are both …

Occupational Injuries Associated With Workplace Violence In An Academic Medical Center, Rebecca J. Bonacci Dec 2021

Occupational Injuries Associated With Workplace Violence In An Academic Medical Center, Rebecca J. Bonacci

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Violence is a major source of workplace injury in the medical profession. Peer reviewed literature is lacking for workers that have injuries through violence from clients who have intellectual disabilities. Literature for hospital security is also lacking. In this study of workplace violence, we compared injuries among the occupational groups at an academic medical center from 2017-2020. We hypothesized that violence will be similar across the years. Occupational injury and illness data was obtained from an academic medical center. The number of violence cases was divided by the total number of injury cases and reported as a percentage. We found …

Factors Contributing To Trust Of Occupational Healthcare Services In Meatpacking Plants, Gabriella Ochoa

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Meatpacking refers to the slaughtering of livestock and processing and packaging it into meat and other byproducts. Meatpacking is a large industry employing thousands of workers from various racial and socioeconomic backgrounds in Nebraska. These workers have experienced disparities in accessing occupational health services such as language barriers, fear of job loss, or deportation due to immigration status if these services were used. The purpose of this study was to investigate how trust in occupational health services varied among employees at a meatpacking plant in Nebraska by demographic characteristics, particularly by ethnicity, gender, and English language proficiency.

Economic Significance In Corporate Finance, Todd Mitton Dec 2021

Economic Significance In Corporate Finance, Todd Mitton

Faculty Publications

Reporting the economic significance of findings in corporate finance has become increasingly common, but a review of the literature reveals shortcomings in typical reporting practices. Researchers can more effectively communicate the practical importance of findings by using standard measures of economic significance that are scaled by the standard deviation of the dependent variable, by providing all statistics necessary to calculate economic significance, and by providing benchmarks by which to evaluate the magnitude of economic significance. To support these objectives, I show why measures scaled by the standard deviation are preferable, and I provide benchmarks based on hundreds of established findings …

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study presents the findings of a wind tunnel experiment investigating the behaviour of micrometric inertial particles with Stokes numbers around unity in the turbulent wake of a stationary porous disk. Various concentrations Φv ∈ ([6 − 19] × 10−6) of poly-disperse water droplets (average diameter 40–50μm) are compared with sub-inertial tracer particles. Hot-wire anemometry, phase Doppler interferometry and particle image velocimetry were implemented in the near- and far-wake regions to study the complex dynamics of such particles. Quadrant analysis is used to explore the shear effects of the particle wake interaction. Turbulence statistics and particle size distributions reveal distinct …

The Ejection Of Large Non-Oscillating Droplets From A Hydrophobic Wedge In Microgravity, Logan Torres, Mark M. Weislogel

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

When confined within containers or conduits, drops and bubbles migrate to regions of minimum energy by the combined effects of surface tension, surface wetting, system geometry, and initial conditions. Such capillary phenomena are exploited for passive phase separation operations in micro-fluidic devices on earth and macro-fluidic devices aboard spacecraft. Our study focuses on the migration and ejection of large inertial-capillary drops confined between tilted planar hydrophobic substrates (a.k.a., wedges). In our experiments, the brief nearly weightless environment of a 2.1 s drop tower allows for the study of such capillary dominated behavior for up to 10 mL water drops with …

Kristen Du Mez Tells Me How Evangelicals Fell In Love With John Wayne, Kristin Du Mez Dec 2021

Kristen Du Mez Tells Me How Evangelicals Fell In Love With John Wayne, Kristin Du Mez

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

When the Access Hollywood “locker room talk” tape hit the mainstream on October 7, 2016, both Russell Moore and historian Kristin Du Mez were horrified. But while Moore felt surprised by the evangelical response—or lack of response—to the video, Du Mez saw it as a predictable outcome of militant masculinity within evangelicalism. In their conversation, and in her book Jesus and John Wayne, Du Mez explains why. On this episode of The Russell Moore Show, Moore and Du Mez talk about the overlap of history, politics, and Christianity when it comes to understanding American evangelicalism’s relationship to gender. They also …

Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Two Contrasting Beef Systems From Birth To Slaughter In Eastern Nebraska, Levi J. Mcphillips Dec 2021

Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Two Contrasting Beef Systems From Birth To Slaughter In Eastern Nebraska, Levi J. Mcphillips

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Over the last 15 years, the increase in land use for corn and soybean has come at the expense of acres of grasslands and perennial forages employed in conventional beef-production systems. Implementing alternative cow-calf production systems into existing cropping systems may be a solution for reduced land availability and reducing total greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Therefore, GHG from a conventional (CONV) pasture-based cattle production system with cows wintered on corn residue and summer grazing of brome pasture were compared to partial-confinement system (ALT) with cows and calves in a drylot during the summer and grazing cover crops and corn residue …
