People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized by differences in social functioning, communication, sensory preferences, and behavior. These differences invite an effort to understand the human-animal bond and its impact on families and children with ASD. The purpose of this study was to determine if the Observation of Human-Animal Interaction for Research (OHAIRE) coding tool can be utilized in a home-based setting to code human-animal interactions in children with ASD. The OHAIRE is a coding tool developed to quantify the behavior of children when interacting with social partners and animals in naturalistic settings. The tool has been tested …

Bacterial Production Of Human Discoidin Domain Receptor 2 (Ddr2) Kinase And Its Gatekeeper Mutants To Assess Activation By Phosphorylation, Dina Allam Abdel Azeem

Discoidin domain receptor 2 (DDR2) belongs to a subfamily of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) known as discoidin domain receptors (DDRs). DDRs are characterized by an extracellular discoidin homology domain and being activated by collagen resulting in a delayed but sustained activation. DDR2 overexpression was reported in some tumors, atherosclerosis as well as a number of inflammatory and fibrotic conditions. Recently 3 kinase inhibitor drugs (imatinib, nilotinib and dasatinib) were reported to inhibit DDR2 kinase activity suggesting it might have a role in their therapeutic effect. However minimal information is available on DDR2 downstream signaling. Identification of DDR2 substrates is essential …

Vibrio cholerae has caused seven global pandemics to date. The ongoing pandemic, caused by Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 El Tor, has been the most extensive in geographical spread and duration. It began in 1961 in Indonesia spreading through Asia and the Middle East and finally reaching Sub Saharan West Africa at the early 1970s. In the first year of the pandemic alone, over 150,000 cases and more than 20,000 deaths were recorded. V. cholerae is currently responsible for several outbreaks in Africa, some with a reported high mortality rate. Although extensive characterization has been carried out on epidemic strains in …

Narrations by notable Islamic personalities are a significant part of the Islamic religious edifice. However, these narrations are of variable quality and authenticity. To evaluate these narrations, standards and tools were developed and used. This study will look into whether or not it is possible to add a new tool that might aid in evaluating the narrations of an individual muḥaddith, using the example of Umm Salama. Human Rights based development is a central but vague and contested approach in development theory and practice. There is considerable rhetoric about its broad conception, techniques, mechanisms and its effect of constructing just relationships and empowering the weakest. In contrast, this thesis argues that existing interpretations and applications of the approach have overlooked the effect of relationships, power interactions, and dynamics of constructing a world view of the meaning, process and realization of the right. This relational perspective is utilized to investigate the work of four Egyptian NGOs working with the Participatory Development Program of the Canadian International Development Agency. …

This study will aim at examining how the changes in Israelâ s security environment affected the strategic usefulness of its nuclear deterrent. The Israeli nuclear deterrent was developed during the 1950s and the 1960s when Israelâ s strategic setting was, mainly, dominated by state-centered security threats. Consequently, Israel, at the time, was mainly concerned with the possible symmetrical military confrontations with its Arab neighbors; something that would have created strategic value for the Israeli nuclear deterrent. In hot arid desert environments, the solar radiation passing through windows increases the cooling loads and energy consumption of buildings. Shading of windows can reduce these loads. External perforated wooden solar screens were traditionally used for windowsâ shading. However, there is a lack in understanding their performance in a quantitative manner and unavailability of scientific means that could be used for developing new efficient designs that suit the harsh desert conditions. This thesis engages a comparative study of the political thought and practice of two of the foremost ideologues of political Islam in the twentieth century: Sayyid Qutb and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The study explores each man’s revolutionary worldview and the strategies they advanced for the effectuation of change. In particular, the study highlights Qutb’s Milestones and Khomeini’s Lectures on Islamic Government. L-Asparaginases (E.C. 3.5.1.1) are group of enzymes which catalyze the hydrolysis of L-asparagine to L-aspartic acid and ammonia. Many microorganisms are known to produce two types of L-asparaginase. Considerable attention has been specifically drawn to type II L-asparaginases due to their potent tumor-inhibitory activity. Various limitations, such as high toxicity, poor stability and short half-life, are associated with the commercially available L-asparaginases used in cancer therapy. Additionally, L-asparaginases have a significant role in food industry owing to their ability to reduce the levels of acrylamide, which is a known neurotoxin and a potential carcinogen, in various food products. Exploration of CRISPR/Cas systems in the unique Red sea Brine pools can provide insights into host-viral interactions in highly extremophile environments. 454 Metagenomic datasets from different strata of Atlantis II, Discovery deep and Kebrit deep brine pools were mined for CRISPR arrays, and Cas proteins and compared to one another. Overall composition of CRISPR types was inferred by Cas protein HMM data, together with Cas1 phylogenetic placement using RaxML and direct repeat typing. Interaction with wrist-worn devices is currently constrained to either voice control or opposing hand control through physical touch on the device screen, crown, or buttons. With one handed control involving full hand extension and hand clenching in a fist, these movements are not discrete. Traditional smartwatch placement on one hand is controlled using the other hand. This is a discrete, yet inconvenient mode of control, especially in situations where the other hand is involved in another function. The waqf is an institution of ongoing charity in the Sharia. That is to say, a person continues to get rewards even after death for undertaking such a charity. This study examines the qard al-hasan (benevolent loan free of interest) as the purpose of a waqf. The qard al-hasan is a legitimate, even recommended method of providing finance in Islam.
