Inpatient falls are a serious cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries among patients of all ages leading to disability and stillness. The post-fall treatment comes with rising medical costs and a stressful recovery phase. The present assessment tools align with analyzing causes of falls from historical data instead of present conditions. The key focus area of this research is to develop general-purpose fall risk assessment tools using machine learning-based predictive modeling. Advances in biomedicine are largely fueled by exploring uncharted territories of human biology. Machine learning can both enable and accelerate discovery, but faces a fundamental hurdle when applied to unseen data with distributions that differ from previously observed ones—a common dilemma in scientific inquiry. We have developed a new deep learning framework, called Portal Learning , to explore dark chemical and biological space. Three key, novel components of our approach include: (i) end-to-end, step-wise transfer learning, in recognition of biology’s sequence-structure-function paradigm, (ii) out-of-cluster meta-learning, and (iii) stress model selection. Magnesium Aluminate and Other Alumina-Based Spinels Attract Attention Due to their High Hardness, High Mechanical Strength, and Low Dielectric Constant. MgAl2O4 Was Produced by a Solid-State Reaction between MgO and Α-Al2O3 Powders. Mechanical Activation for 30 Min in a Planetary Ball Mill Was Used to Increase the Reactivity of Powders. Yttrium Oxide and Graphene Were Added to Prevent Abnormal Grain Growth during Sintering. Samples Were Sintered by Hot Pressing under Vacuum at 1450◦C. This study aims to survey the factors of college GPA, gender, internship experience, and familial influence and independently explore their relationship to career success as measured by starting salary and salary growth. This senior project paper will explore the history, background, process, and challenges encountered while constructing a dream project for the Cal Poly CAED Support Shop during the Summer of 2021. From the initial site survey, through the design and permitting process and the physical construction, this project truly encapsulated the “learn-by-doing” philosophy. Anisotropic mechanical properties are a well-known issue in selective laser melted parts. The microstructure produced by selective laser melting (SLM) is directional, including the solidified melt pool structures and grains. This work investigates the melt pool boundary's effects on 304L stainless steel's compressive properties. 304L stainless steel solid cylinders were built using a pulse laser SLM machine in four directions using three hatch angle rotations: 0⁰, 67⁰, and 105⁰ . The twelve samples were compression tested, and the results were analyzed. Numerical models were also created with the different hatch angles and directions. Northern bobwhite Colinus virginianus populations have been rapidly declining in the eastern, central, and southern United States for decades. Land use change and an incompatibility between northern bobwhite resource needs and human land use practices have driven declines. Here, we applied occupancy analyses on two spatial scales (state level and ecoregion level) to more than 5,000 northern bobwhite surveys conducted over 6 y across the entire state of Arkansas to explore patterns in occupancy and land use variables, and to identify priority areas for management and conservation. The implementation of evidence-based psychosocial interventions using video-conference delivery (VCD) has the potential to increase accessibility to effective treatments, although its use remains limited and understudied. This study employed a mixed methods approach in surveying mental health practitioners about their attitudes regarding VCD of interventions that are considered evidence-based (i.e., have been shown to improve targeted outcomes in rigorous research). One hundred and eleven practitioners were sampled from several national and regional U.S. practice organizations and were administered quantitative surveys about their use of and attitudes towards VCD of evidence-based interventions (EBI). The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the perceptions of a group of middle school teachers regarding changing to standards-based grading (SBG). Data were collected from the transcripts of two different focus groups and analyzed. Study results indicated that SBG measures were not well known by all staff, and many clear resistance points were present. Resistance points centered around five key themes: fear of loss of rigor, community pushback, lack of SBG practices knowledge, lack of supporting infrastructure, and extra time and work required.
