Energy Dissipation During Geomagnetic Storms, Fatemeh Bagheri
Energy Dissipation During Geomagnetic Storms, Fatemeh Bagheri
Physics Dissertations - Archive
Some fraction of the solar wind energy is transferred to the Earth magnetosphere and ionosphere. Sometimes this transfer of energy is exceptionally large, producing a magnetic storm. Storms occur when the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) turns southward and remains southward for an extended period of time. During the main phase of many magnetic storms, the solar wind Mach number is low, and IMF magnitude is large. Under these conditions, the ionospheric potential saturates, and it becomes relatively insensitive to further increases in the IMF magnitude. On the other hand, the dayside merging rate and the potential become sensitive to the …
The Arecibo Observatory As An Instrument For Investigating Orbital Debris, James Isaiah Murray
The Arecibo Observatory As An Instrument For Investigating Orbital Debris, James Isaiah Murray
Physics Dissertations - Archive
In this dissertation, the Arecibo Observatory, both past and future, as an instrument for investigating orbital debris is investigated. For over three decades, models of the orbital debris environment in low Earth orbit (LEO) have been developed to assess the risk posed by orbital debris to spacecraft. While terrestrial radar measures debris 3 mm and larger and in-situ measurements provide data for debris smaller than 1 mm, no good data sources exist for debris between 1 mm and 3 mm in size. This results in large variations between competing orbital debris models. It also happens to be the size regime …
Electronic And Magnetic Properties Of Metal Doped Silicon-Carbide Fullerene-Type Nanostructures, Hussain Jabreel Alathlawi
Electronic And Magnetic Properties Of Metal Doped Silicon-Carbide Fullerene-Type Nanostructures, Hussain Jabreel Alathlawi

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a technologically significant material. A recent report on the abundance of C60 fullerenes in interstellar space, along with the presence of SiC precursors, sparked interest in potentially similar SiC nanostructures. C60 and C70 fullerenes were found experimentally and are an exceptionally stable form of carbon. As Si and C have similar valence electron configurations, it has been long envisioned that Si and SiC could also form similar fullerene-type structures. In this dissertation, Si30C30 fullerene-derived clusters were studied from the first principles theory, starting from an ideal Si60 fullerene template with various arrangements of silicon and carbon …
Nonlinear Mode Coupling Coefficients In Extrasolar Hot Jupiter Systems With Non-Solar Type Host Stars, Niyousha Davachi
Nonlinear Mode Coupling Coefficients In Extrasolar Hot Jupiter Systems With Non-Solar Type Host Stars, Niyousha Davachi
Physics Theses - Archive
Short period planets tidally excite internal gravity modes within their host star. These excited modes, known collectively as the dynamical tide, dissipate orbital energy and cause the planet’s orbit to decay. In hot Jupiter systems, resonantly excited gmodes are driven to such large amplitudes in the stellar core that they nonlinearly excite a sea of secondary modes. These secondary modes can greatly enhance the efficiency of tidal dissipation compared to linear theory predictions and thus significantly increase the rate of orbital decay. In this thesis we calculate the three-mode coupling coefficients between the excited g-modes of hot Jupiter host stars. …
An Examination Of Parental Temperament And Rearrest Among A Sample Of Serious Adolescent Offenders, Lina Maria Jackson
An Examination Of Parental Temperament And Rearrest Among A Sample Of Serious Adolescent Offenders, Lina Maria Jackson
Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive
The relationship of child to parent, is one that has continuously been regarded as an impactful and important one. Parents are often held responsible for the character of their child as well as being responsible for their actions. Whether or not the parental relationship plays a part in an adolescent's re-arrest is what this paper aims to find, specifically looking at parental temperament. In order to lower the rate of rearrests it is important to unpack the factors that contribute to recidivism and where it may begin. This paper examines an adolescent’s rate of rearrest and analyzes if parental temperament …

Distributed Estimation And Inverse Reinforcement Learning For Multi-Agent Systems, Bosen Lian
Distributed Estimation And Inverse Reinforcement Learning For Multi-Agent Systems, Bosen Lian
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Consensus-based distributed Kalman filters for estimation with multiple targets have attracted considerable attention. Most of the existing Kalman filters use the average consensus approach, which tends to have a low convergence speed. They also rarely consider the impacts of limited sensing range and target mobility on the information flow topology. The robustness properties, i.e., gain margins and phase margins of distributed Kalman filtering algorithms are still open problems. In the interactions of controlled dynamical agents, it is often assumed that the agents are "rational" in the sense of attempting to act in such a way as to optimize some prescribed …
Fast And Parallelizable Numerical Algorithms For Large Scale Conic Optimization Problems, Muhammad Adil
Fast And Parallelizable Numerical Algorithms For Large Scale Conic Optimization Problems, Muhammad Adil
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Many real world problems from various application areas such as engineering, finance and operation research can be cast as optimization problems. Generally, the goal is to optimize an objective function under a set of constraints. Traditionally, convex optimization problems are solved by an interior point method (IPM). Interior point methods proved to achieve high accuracy for moderate size problems. However, the computation cost of iterations of these iterative algorithms grows non-linearly with the dimension of the problem. Although interior-point methods are robust and theoretically sound, they do not scale well for very large conic optimization programs. Computational cost, memory issues, …

Headspace-Solid Phase Micro Extraction – Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (Hs-Spme-Gc-Ms) Analysis For Oak Barrel Flavor Compounds In Whiskey, Hailey F. Jarzynka
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive
This study presents a method to simultaneously detect both fault compounds and oak barrel flavor compounds in whiskey using headspace-solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). A major contaminant in whiskey is geosmin and an array of oak barrel compounds includes 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol, 5-methylfurfural, guaiacol, trans-whiskey lactone, 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol, 4-ethylguaiacol, eugenol, vanillin, and 4-ethylphenol. Geosmin is a fault compound that produces a musty or moldy taste to the whiskey and the other compounds originate from the barrels in which the whiskey is aged in and transfer to the whiskey in the aging process. Each compound was quantitated and 15 different whiskies were compared …
The Cellular And Genetic Mechanisms Of Stress Response Pathways In Caribbean Coral, Bradford Austin Dimos
The Cellular And Genetic Mechanisms Of Stress Response Pathways In Caribbean Coral, Bradford Austin Dimos
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Reef-building corals are in decline around the globe due to both the effects of increased ocean temperatures and the emergence of marine diseases which affect corals. These emerging issues threaten the continued persistence of reefs and the ecosystem which they form as the mechanisms which corals use to respond to stress remain poorly characterized, limiting the success of interventions aimed at reversing these declines. To address these issues my dissertation focused on uncovering the cellular and genetic mechanism utilized by Caribbean corals during periods of stress. Towards this aim my second chapter identified and characterized a mitochondrial stress response pathway …

Loperamide-Induced Cardiac Events: Case Reports And Review., Vivek Modi, Matthew Krinock, Ravi V. Desai Md, Steven Stevens, Sudip Nanda
Cardiology Division
Reports of cardiac arrhythmia secondary to loperamide toxicity have become increasingly common in the literature. We present two patients in their mid-20s, each having overdosed on loperamide and subsequently manifesting life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias not otherwise explained by known pathology. An analysis of the limited research available indicates that loperamide's capacity to block ion channels may be responsible for these events. A better mechanistic understanding of loperamide's effects can help inform clinical management of patients with these life-threatening symptoms as at this time no set guidelines for management have yet been established.

Synching Science And Policy To Address Climate Change In Tribal Communities, John C. Ruple, Heather Tanana
Synching Science And Policy To Address Climate Change In Tribal Communities, John C. Ruple, Heather Tanana
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
Climate change is a global environmental problem, and yet, the adverse impacts of climate change are disproportionately felt in tribal communities. There are 574 federally recognized tribes in the United States. While each tribe is unique and independent, many tribes share a common history of colonization and a connection to the land—legally and culturally. The majority of tribal nations were removed from their traditional homelands and placed on reservations by the federal government. In doing so, the federal government established these reservations as a permanent home for the tribe. But that home is now threatened by climate change.

Brothers - In - Arms: Visual Commonalities Between The Us And Is Recruitment Strategies, Maha Ghalwash, Lawrie Phillips
Political Science
This article claims that the visual image contributes to, reflects and supports the dominant discourse of two powerful armed groups that have operated in Iraq and Syria: the US military and the Islamic State (IS). This research uses multimodal discourse analysis to explore two crucial insights into the ideological power of the visual image: the power of the image as spectatorship or spectacle and the sublime or transcendental nature of the visual image. The authors conclude that US and IS recruitment and propaganda videos share these two crucial ideological elements: pride in the spectacle of their military power, discipline and …
Gender Norms And Their Impact, Sarah Shirdon
Gender Norms And Their Impact, Sarah Shirdon
Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal
This study examines how gender norms/stereotypes affect people and the different ways these expectations manifest in society. This scholarship shows how media, school, careers, and other sources are indicated to greatly impact the enforcement of stereotypes. It also presents the way people’s behavior is encouraged and discouraged to conform to the norms affecting overall productivity, performance, psychological well-being, and physical well-being. Studies have also shown a correlation in the future careers that are pursued by men and women in relation to the social norms imposed throughout development. The results in this study reveal a shortage of gender diversity in career …

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Online learning has traditionally relied on asynchronous text-based communication. The COVID-19 pandemic, though, has provided many faculty members with new and/or additional experience using synchronous video-based communication. Questions remain, though, about how this experience will shape online teaching and learning in the future. We conducted a mixed method study to investigate faculty perceptions of using synchronous video-based communication technology. In this paper, we present the results of our inquiry and implications for future research and practice.

Women And The Mealing Room: Presenting A Comparative Analysis Of Female Spaces Across The Chacoan Landscape, Olivia H. Thomsen
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
In the two papers presented in this thesis, I examine mealing facility architecture both within and beyond Chaco Canyon. Both ethnographic and archaeological evidence tie the secular and sacred action of grinding corn to the gendered labor of women in modern and Ancestral Pueblo societies. In both chapters I utilize the defining elements of context, scale, association, and access to measure the ways in which corn grinding facilities in various Chacoan sites are similar and dissimilar to one another.
In chapter 2, I examine the dichotomy between great and small houses located within Chaco Canyon regarding mealing facilities. Utilizing legacy …

Unusual Intraclast Conglomerates In A Stormy, Hot-House Lake: The Early Triassic North China Basin, Kaixuan Ji, Paul B. Wignall, Jeff Peakall, Jinnan Tong, Daoliang Chu, Sara B. Pruss
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Early Triassic temperatures were some of the hottest of the Phanerozoic, sea-surface temperatures approached 40°C, with profound consequences for both the sedimentology and faunal distributions in the oceans. However, the impact of these temperatures in terrestrial settings is unclear. This study examines shallow lacustrine sediments from the Lower Triassic succession of North China. These consist of diverse fluvial to shallow lacustrine sandstones and also spectacular, coarse conglomerates composed of diverse, intraformational clasts reworked from the interbedded sediments. The conglomerate beds can show inverse grading and high angle, flat-pebble imbrication in their lower part and vertically orientated flat pebbles in their …

Investigating Strike-Slip Faulting Parallel To The Icelandic Plate Boundary Using Boundary Element Models, Anna E.R. Pearson, John P. Loveless
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Most faults in Iceland strike roughly parallel to the divergent plate boundary, a part of the North American-Eurasian plate boundary, which would be expected to lead to primarily normal faulting. However, several studies have observed a significant component of rift-parallel strike-slip faulting in Iceland. To investigate these fault kinematics, we use the boundary element method to model fault slip and crustal stress patterns of the Icelandic tectonic system, including a spherical hotspot and uniaxial stress that represents rifting. On a network of faults, we estimate the slip required to relieve traction imposed by hotspot inflation and remote rifting stress and …

In Defense Of 5g: National Security And Patent Rights Under The Public Interest Factors, Kenny Mok
University of Chicago Law Review
Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 authorizes the International Trade Commission (ITC) to stop—or “exclude”—patent-infringing imports. Exclusion orders protect the country against unfair trade practices and help enforce U.S. patent rights. But before issuing an order, the ITC is required by Section 337 to consider the order’s harm to the public health and welfare, its effect on competitive conditions, the availability of substitutes, and the harm to consumers. Because it rarely finds that these “public interest factors” outweigh the benefits of patent enforcement, the ITC has mostly granted exclusion orders despite growing concerns related to the public’s reliance …

Write Like You’Re Running Out Of Time: Prepublication Review, Retroactive Classification, And Intermediate Scrutiny, Henry Walter
University of Chicago Law Review
The Constitution’s promises of freedom of speech and common defense can, at times, be at odds. One acute example of that tension is the prepublication review process, by which the government reviews written works by certain current and former employees to ensure that they do not contain classified or other sensitive information. While this process surely has its merits in preserving national security, it also presents authors with a bureaucratic thicket that is often difficult to navigate. This process is further complicated by the fact that the government can retroactively classify documents, meaning that information that authors might have thought …

This paper presents a comparative study that was conducted aiming at evaluating three different optimization techniques; namely, linguistic Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC), Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP), and the Bees Algorithm. Initially, a well-constructed deterministic model of the turning operation was utilized to feed two optimization techniques, (SQP) and the Bees Algorithm. The results were assessed and compared with those already obtained using (FLC) method that was published in the literature. The study outcomes revealed that, although The Bees Algorithm gave acceptable output, the (SQP) technique identified the optimal cutting conditions. As a result, one can argue that the (SQP) is …

Support Of Conservation Education To Formulate A Better Future For Heritage Districts., Yasmine Sabry
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Heritage districts are a wealth, but most people don’t realize its value. In fact, human deterioration is one of the worst means of deterioration and actually the most common when it comes to heritage districts. This is due to residents’ or users’ bad behaviors towards the built structures in such districts. The cause of this behavior is the local community’s lack of awareness in heritage conservation being a part of the national identity; or even understanding its universal value if it exceeds the local value to become world heritage. In this research, we focus on how educational curriculums do not …

Mansoura Engineering Journal
Transmitting digital data through dispersive channels is mainly affected by intersymbol interference (ISI). The decision feedback equalizer (DFE) was introduced as a suboptimum nonlinear processor to combat ISI for known channel characteristics. In this paper, the performance of the DFE is investigated for a mismatched channel. The channel characteristic under mismatched is allowed to vary with respect to a specified design channel characteristic for which the DFE is design. This investigation will allow us to examine the limits of mismatch for the channel performance is acceptable.
