While a growing body of literature suggests a role for infections in Alzheimer's disease (AD), microbial contributions to AD remains a contentious topic, in part due to challenges in reconciling the positive evidence with studies reporting null findings. Here, we examine the evidence that argues against a role for infections in AD, while offering mechanistic hypotheses that may account for both the negative and positive findings, including dysregulated host immunity and gene-environment interactions of AD-associated genes.

Background Mentorship of new faculty helps to reduce the challenges associated with their new roles, as some lack knowledge of teaching pedagogies. This study assessed the mentorship experiences regarding practices and perceptions of new nursing and midwifery faculty at the Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) in Uganda.

Methodology This study used a phenomenological design. Data were collected in semistructured interviews with 11 participants, and data saturation was reached. Data were organized with NVivo 12 Pro and analyzed using framework analysis.

Findings The main themes that emerged were mentorship practices, perceptions about mentorship, and proposed mentorship guidelines. …

Synthesis And Structures Of Ru(Ii)-P-Cymene Sandwich Complexes With Electron-Withdrawing Cyclopentadienyl Ligands, Uttam R. Pokharel, Sean Parkin, John P. Selegue

A modular synthetic route has been developed to prepare a new series of cationic ruthenium(II) complexes with electron-withdrawing 1,2-diacylcyclopentadienyl ligands. The 2-acyl-6-hydroxyfulvenes were synthesized from cyclopentadienide and acyl chlorides and converted to Tl(I) cyclopentadienyl salts using Tl₂SO₄/KOH. Transmetalation with [Ru(η⁶-p-cymene)(μ-Cl)Cl]₂ followed by PF₆⁻ metathesis gives the complexes [Ru{η⁵-1,2-C₅H₃(CO–R)₂}(η⁶-p-cymene)][PF₆] (R = t-Bu, p-Tol, p-ClC₆H₄, p-IC₆H₄) in moderate to high yields. Exploring The Mental Health Impacts Of Dating Experiences For Racial And Ethnic Minorities At A Predominantly White Institution, Maya Sánchez, Mylina Garza, Emma Chung

The present study examined the mental health implications of racial and ethnic minorities’ dating experiences at a Predominantly White Institution (PWI). The authors conducted retrospective interviews with 20 minority-identifying college students that attend California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Three primary themes emerged from the conducted research. 1) Feeling excluded from racialized beauty standards threatens self-worth, 2) struggling to find romantic belonging limits emotional safety in relationships and navigating cultural differences in dating produces identity hyperawareness. This report documents the design and development of an interactive pollination exhibit created for the Paso Robles Children’s Museum as part of the Mechanical Engineering Senior Project program. The goal of the project was to design a durable, safe, and engaging educational exhibit that introduces children to the role of pollinators in local ecosystems and agriculture through hands-on play. The final design features a triple-track system with rolling bee elements and a central pollen ball pathway that demonstrates how pollinators move between flowers and return resources to the hive. The Baja SAE Gear Testing project outlined a test stand and procedure to update the S-N curve currently used by the Baja SAE team. Currently the Cal Poly Baja SAE geartrain team uses a S-N curve to design custom gears, but this S-N curve does not accurately reflect the gears uses and their fatigue life. This project outlines the exploration of a dyno set up to allow for future testing of different categories of short life cycle gears to collect data and generate a new S-N curve and, ultimately, update the design of the gears. For my senior project, I focused on a design challenge I’ve experienced firsthand in fast-paced event environments: how to communicate clearly through print when guests are moving quickly and processing a lot of information at once. After three years working on the Cal Poly Winemaker Showcase, I saw how programs, menus, bid sheets, and signage are often created piece by piece under pressure, which can lead to inconsistency and confusion. This project develops a structured Event Paper Goods Design System that brings clarity, hierarchy, and cohesion to large-scale fundraising events.

First-generation college students often encounter invisible barriers in higher education, including unspoken terminology, institutional practices, cultural norms, and academic expectations that are rarely made explicit but are essential for student success. While this information is frequently transmitted informally through family networks or prior exposure to higher education, first-generation students, particularly those from historically marginalized communities, often lack access to these channels. As a result, students may experience confusion, a reduced sense of belonging, and inequitable academic outcomes.

My senior project focuses on the primary stages of creating a soup brand through market/trend research and branding. During this project, I aim to better understand the process of creating a brand, and the organization needed to flow through different stages.

My project hopes to analyze the current market and determine what it takes to create a successful product that stands out. My goal is to have a cohesive vision of the brand that creates a better baseline for later steps, such as graphic and packaging design, social media, and marketing.

Organizations like the Interfraternity Council (IFC) have a hard time with telling a comprehensive story of the positive impact they are making to Cal Poly as well as to the SLO community. Our fraternities spend thousands of hours collectively to serve the local communities, and we collect metrics on volunteer hours, how much funds we raised, etc. However, these are usually communicated in a disjointed way through social media, emails and so on. So the various community stakeholders don’t get the full picture, and the negative perceptions around partying far outweigh the good we are doing.

Generally, children’s materials in early literacy are not well represented in terms of culture, especially for bilingual and Latinx children. For example, many alphabet books include the translation of the alphabet in Spanish and English; however, these materials often do not include the translation of the alphabet in a cultural context. Instead, they often separate the two languages and create a disconnect between the two for bilingual children. Graphic communication is a significant area of concern in this case, as the use of typography, composition, and color can greatly impact how the reader processes the information being communicated.

3d Bouldering Project, Joseph Robison

Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies

Many indoor rock climbers struggle to make the transition from indoor to outdoor bouldering due to differences in route visualization. This project applies photogrammetry to create 3D scans of outdoor holds with accurate measurements and textures to improve climber visualization. The measurements were then mapped onto a Tension Board 1 simulation. Six climbers were divided into control and simulation groups to test effectiveness. Results showed that confidence and perception of outdoor ability were increased in the simulation group. Performance outcomes were approximately equal between both groups. These findings suggest that visualization tools can enhance mental preparation for outdoor climbing.

Background: Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability globally, with sub-Saharan Africa, bearing the greatest burden. Tanzania has only one active stroke registry, limiting evidence-based care and policy development. We aimed to expand the registry into a multi-centre study across eight major tertiary hospitals to generate baseline data for a national stroke registry.

Methods: From January to August 2024, we analysed de-identified data from adults (≥18 years) admitted with a World Health Organisation defined stroke. Data collected included demographics, risk factors, imaging, and in-hospital mortality. Logistic regression identified predictors of mortality.

One in 25 deaths worldwide is related to liver disease, and often with multiple hepatosplenic conditions. Yet, little is understood of the risk factors for hepatosplenic multimorbidity, especially in the context of chronic infections. We present a novel Bayesian multitask learning framework to jointly model 45 hepatosplenic conditions assessed using point-of-care B-mode ultrasound for 3155 individuals aged 5-91 years within the SchistoTrack cohort across rural Uganda, where chronic intestinal schistosomiasis is endemic. We identify distinct and shared biomedical, socioeconomic, and spatial risk factors for individual conditions and hepatosplenic multimorbidity, and introduce methods for measuring condition dependencies as risk factors. Background Kaposi sarcoma is a malignant vascular neoplasm caused by human herpesvirus-8. It is mostly seen in immunocompromised individuals, particularly those with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or organ transplants. Cutaneous and mucosal Kaposi sarcoma manifestation is common; however, Kaposi sarcoma may involve the visceral organs. Iatrogenic or drug-induced Kaposi sarcoma may develop in immunocompromised patients undergoing immunosuppressive medication. It is quite uncommon for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases on immunosuppressive medication to develop intestinal Kaposi sarcoma. Improvements To Fisheries Compensation Processes And Valuation Methodologies In Western Australia, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Fisheries Published Reports

This report has been prepared by the Compensation Working Group (WG) to provide advice to the Minister for Fisheries on improving Western Australia’s (WA) fisheries compensation processes under two key legislative frameworks:

• Fisheries adjustment schemes, under the Fisheries Adjustment Scheme Act 1987
• (FAS Act), and 
• Statutory compensation under Fishing and Related Industries Compensation (Marine Reserves) Act 1997 (FRICMA).

This work has been undertaken as a precursor to the larger scale adjustment and compensation processes that will be required as part of the implementation of several marine parks throughout the Kimberley and South Coast of WA.
